Tel-Tru BQ300 Barbecue Thermometer, 3 inch aluminum zoned dial, 2.5 inch stem, 100/500 degrees F

Tel-Tru BQ300 Barbecue Thermometer, 3 inch aluminum zoned dial, 2.5 inch stem, 100/500 degrees FI have 2 of these on my smoker, installed at grill surface vs. up top where the original thermometer hole was. They do a fine job and the large dials are very nice. The 2nd one I got came with no mounting nut and washer, which seemed odd. Maybe that is to keep the price down as the nut and washer retail for another $6-7 purchased separately. I bought an inexpensive nut at a hardware store and made a washer out of stainless steel wire.

MEECO?S RED DEVIL Firelighting Squares, 144 pieces

MEECO?S RED DEVIL Firelighting Squares, 144 piecesSitting in front of a roaring fire as we speak, made easy with the use of these fire starters. They ignite much easier than two other types I've tried and burn for several minutes, ensuring that the fire gets going. I heat my home primarily with a wood stove, so it is imperative that I start the fire as fast as I can on those cold mornings and these starters make it so much easier. Now that I have tried them and know how well they work, I will be ordering more to have on hand. Please understand that I am a real guy up here in Canada who has found an exceptional product and wants to share...I am not a copy writer nor do I have any affiliation with this company or this web site. Cheers and happy burning...stay warm!

I purchased these for my elderly Mother for her woodstove. I had tried others in the past and she had difficulties breaking up the blocks as they were very thick and hard on her hands. She often had to use many more than was necessary due to that problem, making it an expensive alternative to kindling.

When she tried these she was amazed at how easily they separated and she only had to use 1 to get the fire going. The boxes are small and easily stored, the ease of use is incredible and at price made it easy for me to stock her up for the entire winter, with no worries of her not being able to use them correctly when I couldn't be there to break them up for her.

I will be stocking up on more of these as they are perfect for her and work better than any others we've tried in the past. On the box it said to use 2 or 3 but all that's needed is 1 small square to get the fire blazing, a very convenient and economical solution. Highly recommended and the ease of use is beyond compare. An excellent product!

I never had used any kind of fire starter other than paper and wood chips, and I have a gas starter in my fireplace too. I much prefer these fire starters. They are cheap (I only use one per fire) and they always light easily. My husband is even successful and he has problems with other methods. We couldn't be happier!

I have been buying various kinds of fire starters for several years to use previously, in a fireplace insert, and currently, in a free standing wood stove. I had found a kind we really liked, but the store where we had been buying them went out of business. Then, I found these, SureStart Firelighting Squares,Firestarter Squares, 144PK BOX FIRE STARTER online and they looked similar to what we had been using. We received them within two days of placing the order. Yes, they are EXACTLY what I was looking for and they work GREAT!!! I will buy this kind for as long as I am able. They light in a split second and ignite the kindling or wood on the first try. We never have to use more than one square! And the price on these is about a third of what I had been paying!! Fantastic Item for a Great price!!

I was fed up with the starters I've been buying Duraflame and ones from Safeway. All were difficult to light and needed to be cut up to make them cost effective. I looked online and read the reviews for these little guys. They work great and are easy to snap apart. One works great! Even with freight, those cost less than the Safeway ones. (Would be even better if they were Amazon prime, but still a 5 star!)

Mr. Heater 75,000 BTU 12-Foot Propane Hose Assembly #F273702

Mr. Heater 75,000 BTU 12-Foot Propane Hose Assembly #F273702I bought this hose because I wanted to maximize the safety, usefulness and economy of the propane Portable Buddy heater by Mr Heater. You can't go wrong buying this hose!

1. It allows the use of a larger LP tank (I have a 20 lb cylinder). I am certain the savings from buying LP fuel in bulk will pay for the hose.

2. You can locate the bulk tank a good distance away from the lit heater. I use the heater primarily in my garage, and with the hose I can put the heater up on a shelf or on the workbench, off the floor, and still have the bulk tank in a convenient and safe spot.

3. The hose can be used with any propane appliance that uses disposable propane cylinders.

Here's an essential safety tip when using this hose: be sure to shut/close the valve on the bulk tank BEFORE you remove the hose from the tank. It's possible to remove the hose end from the bulk tank without closing the tank valve and you will quickly find out that liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is another name for stinky, oily mess when it comes squirting out of the valve as I've done.

I bought two of these hoses to attach to two 20lb propane tanks. Attaching to 20lb propane tanks is a huge savings over using the individual 1 quart propane cyclinders. Hoses work very well. The only thing to remember when attaching the hose to 20lb propane tanks is that the couplings are left hand threaded (i.e. you must turn to the left to tighten).

Buy Mr. Heater 75,000 BTU 12-Foot Propane Hose Assembly #F273702 Now

If you are buying the Mr. Buddy Heater, this hose (or the 5' model) are definately needed. By using the larger (20lb or bigger) tanks you have many more hours of operation without having to change the disposable tanks. This hose will also allow you to use bulk tanks with any propane appliance that accepts the disposable tanks (stoves, lantern, etc.).

I bought this extended hose to keep the radiant heater hanging on the ceiling in my garage while allowing the tank to be a good distance away. While the POL style fitting worked fine for the 20Lb propane tank I have but the other end does NOT fit in the MH40LP gas inlet. It would've been nice to know what parts I needed before hand, now I will have to go to homedepot and do research on the parts I need or having to once again order off the internet and wait...

Want Mr. Heater 75,000 BTU 12-Foot Propane Hose Assembly #F273702 Discount?

This is the hose you need to hook up your Buddy heater to a larger (20 lbs) propane tank.

This hose is all you need. You don't need anything else. You don't need a regulator. However, adding a fuel filter wouldn't be a bad idea.

Both ends of this hose are suggested to be hand-tightened. Fine. However, I couldn't get mine to pass gas. The fitting going into the heater needed another 1/8" of turn at which point the gas flowed freely. Apparently the fitting is quite sensitive. This required a wrench as I had tightened it as much as possible, by hand. You may, or may not, need to do this.

The hose itself is of good quality, and so are the brass fittings. Nevertheless, the hose needs protection from abrasion and assorted abuse. As a reminder, recall that the fitting going into the propane tank must be turned counter-clock-wise to tighten, as opposed to normal threading which is turned clock-wise to tighten. Finally, remember to turn off the gas at the propane tank, and letting the heater burn off the gas in the line, so as not to turn the Plasticizer in the hose into gunk, which would clog up your heater.

(There is another hose, without the Plasticizer being sold by Mr Heater, but of course, having no Plasticizer, that hose will be stiff as heck.)

GrillPro 98170 Fajita Pan

GrillPro 98170 Fajita PanThis is a good fajita pan but unfortunately it is only good for one, maybe two servings sizes. As someone who grew up using larger fajita skillets I am accustomed to seeing larger ones. Overall measurements given also include the handle length. It is heavy duty and will last anyone who buys one a long time.

Very well designed Fajita Pan, tasted like Fajitas out of my favorite authentic mexican restaurant only pitfall is the pan is very small, so it fits about one serving of fajitas good news is, it doesn't take very long to cook, so you can add more into the pan if needed, or just get a 2nd one!

George Foreman Jumbo Sized Grill, Black

George Foreman Jumbo Sized Grill, BlackI'm no stranger to Foreman grills and they always cook my food up just right. I love how easy it is to clean this grill. You can wipe it clean with a damp cloth while the grill is hot or cold. When I saw the picture on Amazon of the 6 burgers on the grill, I thought, "Oh, that's big, but those burgers look kind of small." But when I opened this grill for the first time, I knew 6 burgers was nothing. This sucker's huge.

Also when I opened it, right away I noticed that the drip tray was broken into 3 pieces. With the smaller models I've had before, if the tray was dirty or something I could just use a paper plate, but again this grill is HUGE so it's important to me to have the proper drip tray. I contacted the seller, who wrote me back in 5 minutes with an arrival date for my new drip tray. Excellent customer service right there! Would definitely do business with this seller again :)

We are a family of five and I love how quickly we can make grilled cheese on this! We also use it for bacon, hamburgers, etc. No complaints with the performance and quality.

George Foreman Original Next Grilleration White

George Foreman Original Next Grilleration WhiteGeorge Foreman grill purchased through Amazon (one of their sellers) was defective from the getgo. I sent it back via a prepaid label provided by the seller. I had to really prod them to get my full credit back after they had already received the product and had it for several days! Finally on the 18th of August, I sent them another email about their non-responsiveness to issuing my credit. They proceeded to go to work on it then and shortly afterwards on the same day, told me that Amazon would soon be issuing my credit. I received the full credit today but after much pain and agony..........Just be careful! I would not recommend this seller nor this particular George Foreman Grill..........

Bought it new.. First time using it and it doesn't work. Light turns off in about 2 minutes and it stops heating. Manual says light shuts off and on to regulate temparature.. but this one just shuts off.. A major disappointment.. This one is made in CHINA.. I guess they are cutting costs and quality. Took me about 1 hour to cook a chicken breast. Had to unplug and plug it in several times for it to turn back ON.. I will return it tomorrow. OH and I already own 2 larger GEORGE foreman grills that don't have this problem.

Berndes Tradition 9-1/2-Inch Square Grill Pan

Berndes Tradition 9-1/2-Inch Square Grill PanI've had this grill pan for at least 5 years now. It's a great pan and cooks well on my ceramic cooktop. I grill steaks indoors using this pan and have been extremely pleased with the results, much better than any other pan I've used. Cleanup is generally a snap and the non-stick surface has held up well over the years. I'm in the market for new cookware and am looking at other pieces of the Berndes line.

This is my second Berndes Grill Pan.I used the first one for ten years. The non-stick surface on my new pan has been much improved. The pan is a dream. I love it! Hamburgers taste as though they were done on an outdoor barbecue.

All I can say is "wow!" ... what a nice grill pan. For a single person, this is a great size for a piece of salmon or chicken. Heats uniformly and cooks great. Grilled two filet mignons in this pan before popping them into the oven, and they turned out great. The meat was lightly marinated and didn't use any oil in the pan and the steak turned out nice. And a light wiping with paper towels and light washing afterwards, it looked new...still. I plan to use this pan more than my outdoor grill as it adds the grill marks to the meat quickly without having to fire up the BBQ grill. The price was right, and I love the wood handle. Can't go wrong buying this grill pan. German quality at its best.

GrillPro Bamboo Skewers

GrillPro 11070 12-Inch Bamboo SkewersWe ordered these for our daugthers wedding. We had fire pits and wanted to roast marshmallows and make s'mores. And we needed something that would just be "tossed" and not reused (well they weren't tossed but put in fire)plus we had lots of young children who were there and we needed something safe and easy for them to use. We ordered the longer skewers and they were great! Will be remembering this to give for camping, too.

This listing indicates you will recieve 10 packages of 100 for $4.99. And you pay for 5 lbs of shipping (about $8.00). This would make sense. However, you only recieve one package of 100 skewers. I am out over $20.00 now. My loss is your warning.

Cooked-Per'fect Complete - Reusable Color-Changing Thermometer for Beef, Fish, Poultry, and Pork

Cooked-Per'fect Complete - Reusable Color-Changing Thermometer for Beef, Fish, Poultry, and PorkWe first saw a demo of this product at Cal State Fair and bought one there. After using it at home and being so happy with the accuracy and ease of use, we decided to buy one for our 5th wheel trailer plus several for gifts from Amazon. We have not been disappointed.

This little gadget is the best! My experience is 100% positive. I use it especially for cooking fish and for beef, in the oven and on the grill--both are hard to tell when they are done and don't want to be overcooked. Someone gave me this a couple of years ago and it is one of those things I wonder how I survived without. When I asked her where she got it so I could get more she couldn't remember. I have looked locally and described it to sales people whose eyes just glaze over. Finally just now, after taking it out of the dishwasher, on a whim, I googled "fish poultry beef rare medium well color coded thermometer". Amazon to the rescue! I have five daughters/daughter in laws and I am ordering five today. Maybe I will order myself an extra--my husband started washing this in the dishwasher which I am sure is against the rules, so mine may quit. But so far it's been fine!

This works by sticking it into your meat and reading the color temps. My instant read thermometer has been giving me some bad temps so I needed a replacement for that one. You can see the temperature differences between the surface of the meat and the center so you can get a heads up when the center of your burgers is that perfect 145 degrees. GRIND YOUR OWN MEAT!

We grill everything: steak, fish, pork, veal, lamb, and depending on the thickness, temperature, time, and so on we were forever undercooking or overcooking (worse!) our dinner until we got one of these. Instead of having to slice into the meat (and having the juice run down into the burners) you simply "stab" it into the meat (fish, pork, etc.) and it "lights up" to tell you if you're almost there, there, or on your way to well done. It's sort of like a mood ring for food ;)

The settings are for beef, fish, and poultry but you can safely use the beef settings for other farm meats like lamb and pork.

We like it enough we have given it as gifts to friends who barbecue, and who we notice have a hard time getting the meat cooked "just right."

Want Cooked-Per'fect Complete - Reusable Color-Changing Thermometer for Beef, Fish, Poultry, and Pork Discount?

Would prefer a probe that lights up rare, med, well-done rather than a strip that is flexible to insert in meat. Color s only the part stuck in meat, but maybe that's how it's supposed to work. I was impressed that it lists fish as most don't.

Baker's Secret Large Broiler with Grill Top

Baker's Secret Large Broiler with Grill TopNB: The one star rating of this broiler is only(!) because there is no "zero star" option.

I went through *two* of these broilers in less than two months and after repeated delays awaiting a return lablel (I don't have easy access to a working printer) finally returned them to Amazon for refund -which I never(!) received, despite being assured that I would be refunded the shipping cost I paid to return them.

Despite close(!) attention to the use and care instructions, the non-stick surface of the pans began to crack/peel/flake after less than five to six washings in my automatic dishwasher. Under no circumstances whatsoever should foods of any type ever be placed in the pan.

The non-stick surface of the grills lasted longer, but they, too, eventually deteriorated, allowing foods to stick and the coating to peel.

Despite the low price I cannot recommend this item.

I bought this at my local grocer for the "grill pan" so I could bake foods with less fat. After reading the instructions when I got home, I raised an eyebrow. The instructions say, "DO NOT use vegetable cooking sprays. Follow recipe instructions for greasing and flouring." I had to wonder why no use of vegetable sprays? After all, that is precisely what low fat recipes call for. I wondered if this meant that you didn't need to spray it since it was "non-stick", or that the sprays would leave a film. Because there was no explanation as to why, I just decided to follow the recipe (as the instructions said) but eliminate the specific instruction on using the spray.

The very first dish I made (oven fried chicken and specifically this recipe: ) stuck so badly to the pan that I didn't think I could actually clean it off. It took two days of soaking and multiple scrubbing sessions. I finally assumed that perhaps this was a recipe that needed to be done without a grill pan. Okay fine.

The second time I made simple baked fish. It still stuck to the grill pan. In fact, we had about half the fish I originally baked in the oven because it tore apart when I attempted to remove it. Once again, I had to soak and srub, then soak and scrub.

I then thought I'd try one more thing. I oiled the grill pan before baking chicken. It helped, but did not appear to make too much difference at all. I still had chicken stuck to the grill pan, though admittedly it was a bit better. Still, the chicken was also a bit more greasy than I wanted.

I don't know what else to say about it. The grill pan is a complete failure as far as non-stick goes. The one perk was that after being scrubbed so many times (the grill pan, not the roasting pan) it still had no scratches at all, so at the very least it is durable.

The roaster part of the pan has given me no trouble at all, but that's probably because so far I've only used it to catch the drippings. Still, the drippings that have fallen into the roaster pan wash out instantly even if dried, so that at least is definitely non-stick. It's too bad that they didn't make the "grill pan" with the same material.

I would not recommend this purchase if you're buying it for the grill pan. If you're looking at it just for the roasting pan, you can buy that alone for a cheaper price. I'd recommend doing that instead.

Buy Baker's Secret Large Broiler with Grill Top Now

I may not be a master chef, but I have tried multiple times to use this broiling pan. Everytime I get the same results! The surface of the non-stick pan cannot take the heat of your oven on broil. My oven has a high and low broil setting, and even the low setting ends up with a smokey plastic smell (without food on it!). I am back on Amazon tonight to seek out a replacement. I have been craving lamb chops, and I need to get broiling!

Read Best Reviews of Baker's Secret Large Broiler with Grill Top Here

I've had this pan for several years and finally threw it away today. It's a small size, which is what I needed for my 2-person family, and works fine as a broiling pan. However the grill is hard to clean even if you spray it first, and after the first use or two it was already starting to look kind of crummy. That was OK with me, since a broiler never looks good after being used, and as long as it was clean and sanitary I was happy. But for the price I think it's time to toss it and get a new one.

So if you don't mind a broiling pan that looks like it's been used, you can't beat this for the price. Personally I'll be upgrading to a more expensive one now, in hopes that it will be easier to clean.

I really thought I was getting a good deal. I believe I did. However I have used the pan once to broil a steak and I can't get the top of the pan completely clean. Looks like it is permanently stained.

MaxiMatic ERO-2008S Elite 6-Slice Toaster Oven with Rotisserie and Grill/Griddle Top

MaxiMatic ERO-2008S Elite 6-Slice Toaster Oven with Rotisserie and Grill/Griddle TopI have been a countertop oven user for 20 yrs-even when my three children were @ home. Takes up less space and uses less energy. With the invention of the microwave, who needs a big stove. I use a countertop 2 burner hotplate also.

When my Maximatic ERO2006S (which I stumbled upon @ a discount warehouse) retired after many years (6-8) of faithful service, after much searching for the perfect replacement and finding many worthy contenders, I stuck w/Maximatic and went for the upgrade (Elite Professional ExLarge-23L-ERO2008S) which is a better value, I think, than the ERO2006S and definately worth the extra money.

This little oven is a big bang for the buck. I just love it. Rotisserie, broil, roast, bake, steams? griddle and oh yeah-makes great toast too. Roomy enough to roast 6-8 lb (at least) chicken or turkey breast. W/separately purchased pizza stone-a pizza oven. W/separately purchased steamer-a veggie steamer as well.

Listing @ just $10.00 more than its older model, Maximatic has kicked it up a notch or two. W/its updated snazzier look and larger size (height & width pretty much the same but depth, front to back is where most of the extra room is). Also much roomier cooking top. Profile is angled w/more room near the bottom which gives it a nice look. Looks much better than as pictured.

This one has a 'stay on' and timer function w/bell too. Yay!

The roomier multi-use top is very handy (why don't they all do this ???). The well thought out combo design enables the heat in the top to be put to good use as a steamer and warmer when roasting/baking/broiling. This was the biggest reason for choosing Maximatic in the first place and then replacing it w/the newer model. The top used as griddle is another cooking option (though seems somewhat cramped).

I was hoping a standard 9x13 would fit, but 2 8x8 works too. I have located some great cookware that does fit so not a priority or problem.

The brand is not well known @ least to me. The price was right for my first Maximatic and I was in a bind so I grabbed it, but would never have purchased an unknown or little-known brand if given a choice. The first one did not disappoint and I'm hoping this one will last as that one did.

This toaster oven replaced a piece of crap I'd had enough of ruining my food. So far I'm extremely satisfied with this toaster oven. I have already baked brownies, toasted bread, and roasted a pork loin using the rotisserie. I have had it only 5 days but am extremely satisfied so far. I bought this hoping to cook more without having to heat up the whole oven for a simple small item. The only concern is the amount of overhead clearance when using the rotisserie. You will have to tie up a chicken well to be sure not to push against the top.

The Elite Professional Jumbo was a Birthday present to myself ;) I'd looked for quite a while at whatever features might be available in a toaster oven and this one has it all and more. My intenions were to cut out on the use of the 220 oven going more green but also, I'm disabled and thought a toaster oven would be less bulky to use. I am a former Chef and cook from scratch quite a bit. I simply love this oven!! The top portion is a griddle/saute portion with a nice-sized cover for bulk quite a unique addition. The rotisserie is a wonderful bonus and it's one experiment after another. It has multiple settings for bake, broil, toast, keep warm, etc. The fact that you can adjust the timer to "stay on" is a great feature that was a complaint (the heat goes off when the oven goes off on a plain timer) in a lot of other reviews --you're allowed to slow roast and not have to turn the timer back on every hour. The size is "Jumbo" yet takes up little counter space. Mine actually fit nicely right on a "TV Table" I'd no other use for. The construction is solid and not "Tin-" ny as is the complaint on many an oven. Well worth the few additional dollars -you can't go wrong here!!

Steven Raichlen Best of Barbecue Wide Bamboo Grilling Kabob Skewers 6.5-inch Long, Set of 25These are perfect for corn on the cob. You insert the firmly and they stay. Not like metal ones with short prongs that keep slipping out. If you microwave your corn, you can insert them into the corn and put them into the microwave, unlike metal ones. They are diswasher safe and can be used over. They are a little long for corn on the cob so I cut some the length off with scissors. You can also get shorter ones also.

Not much to say. I prefer the flat skewers they hold more and are easier to turn. When I run out I will buy some more. Really good for seafood and vegetables. Foods stay put.

One of the big problems with barbecuing shrimp, is with most skewers that are round, is when you turn the shrimp on the barbecue, it spins. You really have to work the over to the other side to get it to cook. With these flat sided skewers, that does not happen. You turn the skewer, you turn the shrimp.

Items on a skewer tend to rotate around a round skewer. A flat skewer allows you to easily turn a skewer loaded with meat over and cook it right.

A cooking tip===do not mix good items on a skewer. Put onions on one, tomatoes on another, meat on another, etc. You remove them and serve them and your food will be better.

Another tip, mark the skewer for each food product and then soak it and use them over and over.

Lodge Logic LJSCP3 Jumbo Chef's Platter, 12-inch by 15-inch

Lodge Logic LJSCP3 Jumbo Chef's Platter, 12-inch by 15-inchLet me start off by saying that I'm an unabashed fan of cooking with cast iron cookware and Lodge cast iron in particular.

Having used the Lodge Pro Logic pizza pan from over a year to make roast potatoes (thin skin red, fingerling, little gourmet potatoes, cut to roughly same size, liberally tossed in olive oil, Rosemary, Oregano, a dash of red wine vinegar, 450 degrees, 20 minutes then flip with spatula or tongs, roast another 20 minuts or until soft).

The possibility of roasting all kinds of veggies arises. I bought this pan to serve as a spill over pan when I had too many veggies on the pizza pan (a little space around the roasted veggies helps).

Alas, it perfectly fits 1/2 of my gas grill, I'm now thinking about roasted veggies in the summer without running a high temperature oven in the summer. I'll also use this for family style fajitas.

Like all Lodge the quality is great. The 12" X 15" dimensions are outer dimensions, with the inner dimensions being about 12"-10", 10-14" at the wide point.

When you buy this remember it is a heavy pan that will get heavier when full of food. Be in the habit of picking up a pot holder when you move towards a pan. This pan will hold the heat from the oven. Be prepared to still have your food warm on the coolest winter days when you go back for seconds, or even when it comes time to clean up.

Lodge makes a smaller version of this pan, I"m not sure if it's on Amazon yet. The smaller version has a wood liner available, but there is no liner available for the jumbo platter.

The Lodge Chef's Platter can certainly be used as a serving platter. Warm it slightly in an oven to keep hot hors d'oeuvres warm. Chill it in a refrigerator for an hour before serving a relish tray or meat and cheese tray so those items stay colder longer.

The versatility comes from its ability to be used in the oven, on the stove top, or on the grill. Preheat it for 15-20 minutes in the oven and put on french fries, sweet potato fries, pizza, veggies, chicken strips, or anything else. The food comes out crispy with a perfectly thin "crust". No more soggy baked french fries!

For the bakers, this also works well for Italian bread. Pre-heat it and you'll get a nice crispy crust that works very well with Italian bread.

What originally drew me to the platter was its flat bottom (save for the small Lodge logo cast into it). The flat bottom means it can work effectively on a glass or ceramic smooth-top electric stove. You must give the platter adequate time to pre-heat when using it on a stovetop. Due to its size and slow-heating nature, it will take a good 10-20 minutes for the edges to heat up on a smooth-top stove (longer than my 12" Lodge skillet). If you don't, you'll have a big hot spot in the middle. Depending on the size of your stove and the configuration of your burners, you may be able to get the platter to fit across two burners.

Once your platter is pre-heated on the stove top, it works very well as a smooth griddle for pancakes, eggs, fried rice, grilled cheese, paninis, and everyone's favorite food: bacon.

Take the platter outside and put it on your gas or charcoal grill. It will prevent smaller items from falling between the grates. It also won't let flames to directly contact the food which can be good if whatever your cooking is somewhat delicate or has a tendency to catch fire.

The platter does come preseasoned from the factory. However, in my experience, it is a bit weak and needs a bit of help. My process for building up the seasoning on a new pan, or giving a boost to used ones is to warm the piece on the stovetop and lightly coat it with vegetable (soybean) oil or vegetable shortening. I then place the piece in a 500-degree oven (upside-down so excess oil won't pool) for one hour. After the hour is up, I turn the oven off and leave the piece in there until it is cool. This process will create smoke, so be sure to turn your range hood on and/or open a window.

The only negative to this pan is its size. The cooking surface is less than 12x15 probably closer to 10x13. Lodge needs to make a 15x20 version to fully occupy two burners on a typical stove.

The standard warnings about cast iron apply to this platter: it's heavy, it takes time to heat up and cool down, it's not dishwasher safe, it will rust if you scour it and soak it, and you shouldn't use soap or detergent on it.

The name "Platter" can really be misleading for this pan. We have found that it substitutes great for a cookie sheet and most anything else that you would use a cookie sheet for. Matt shows you this cookie sheet in our video and he goes over its finer qualities!

I use cast iron pretty much exclusively at this point, so I purchased two of these platters to replace cookie sheets. They're great! I don't normally love Lodge's pre seasoning, but these pans really were non-stick upon arrival (not that that stopped me from applying my own coat of seasoning anyway...).

Size-wise they're great as well. I've used them to bake cookies (each platter holds 9 good-sized cookies), make fries for two people (two large potatoes worth), bake two personal-size thin crust pizzas (I choose these over my pizza stone for ease of use), and warm cheesy, gooey nachos. In all those applications, nothing ever stuck to the platters, they wiped clean with just paper towel, and I was able to store them easily. I definitely recommend you get one or two of these!

We use this pan for all kinds of things in the oven and the grill. Roasting vegetables, grill cheese, piazza, brick chicken on the grill, corn on the cob in the grill is also good. This pan has never let me down.

Romertopf No. 117 Clay Baker

Romertopf No. 117 Clay BakerI purchased the Romertopf 6 1/2 Quart Clay Baker to replace a smaller clay baker that I have had for years. Baking in clay pots is my absolute favorite way to cook roasts and chicken and this larger size allows me to cook plenty of vegetables and meat to feed by family of five at family dinners (and have leftovers). The flavors are outstanding and I highly recommend this method of cooking to anyone who hasn't tried it. You soak the clay pot, fill it up, and place it in a cold oven and turn up the temp -then you do nothing until it is done -it is the most tender, juicy meat you will ever eat.

The pot is exactly what I expected it would be, although my old one was glazed inside and this one is not. I have used it several times already and that has not been a problem.

I like it so much I am purchasing the same pot in a smaller size so I can cook dinners for two.

this thing barely fits in my oven so it can make a big big stew. i have loved my 4 quart schlemmertopf clay pot but sometimes it's a little small for what i wnt to cook. when i saw the romertopf 6 1/2 quart i had to have it. try this: 2pound roast, 1-2 inches of water, salt, pepper, garlic, basil. cook in oven at 350 for 1 hour. add two large russet potatos cubed, 1 pound carrots, one large red onion, one large bunch of celery, all chopped, and one 16 oz. jar of a good marinara sauce (h.e.b.'s 2 dollar version is great). add water to about 1 inch from top of pot. cook for another 2 hours at 350. you don't even have to check it. this is stew like mom used to make!!!!

have cooked two turkeys in this since received. wish i had bought one of these years ago. easy and quick to use. meat falls off the bone and is moist and juicy. used a standard recipe, but increased the temp. by 100 degrees and reduced cooking time by 30 minutes. fastest i have ever cooked a turkey other than by frying.

easily handled a 14 lb. turkey. could go larger; specs say up to 17 lbs.

only minor complaint is that if you only have one oven, the temp. is so high and the clay pot so large that it is difficult to cook sides at the same time. i used my gas grill as an oven for the side dishes.

I've been using this pot to make turkey for the holidays and it works brilliantly. I've just ordered a second one because these same ones from Mexico are not made any longer. The new ones will be shipped from Germany. The German web site for this pot says: "with porous inner glaze in the base", which concerns me. It doesn't appear that my current pot has any glaze in it. And I don't want to mess with perfection.

The max size bird I'd cook in this pot is 13 pounds. I prefer 12.5 pounds, which leaves a bit of room. I leave the thawed, naked bird on a wire rack in the fridge for 16 hours or so to allow the skin to dry out, which makes for crispy skin. I bring the turkey closer to room temperature by leaving it on the counter for 2 hours. I soak the pot for 30 minutes before placing the bird in it. I cook the 12.5 pound turkey for about 2.5 hours at 450 Fahrenheit. I don't use stuffing. Instead I chop a handful of veggies I like and place them in the cavity--leaving enough room for the heat to enter the cavity.

For those interested in the German page (slashes removed): roemertopf.de english roemertopf_klassik klassik.htm

The Romertopf Direct web site says: "All Romertopf by Reco products have been discontinued and our store is now closed."

[Update: 12-31-2012]: One source for these pots ( fantes [dot] com ) wrote to me that the new pots (i.e. non-Reco pots) will be arriving in mid-January. According to them the new pots "will be glazed on the bottom half, and the top unglazed, similar to the Schlemmertopfs"

As a young mom, I noticed that my Italian neighbor used the Rometopf for everything she baked. I gave it a try. I think it is the only way to get a carefree turkey that has moist breast meat and nicely browned skin. Even my non cook daughter in law made a fantastic turkey with the clay baker. It is great for any meat you want to bake and bread pudding.

Remember to soak it in water before using. It is a life saver if you get a late start on a holiday dinner or important meal. I have used a Rometopf for over 30 years and still love using it. I put it inside my dishwasher with no soap or rinse agent and run a cycle. It comes out fresh and has no soap or rinse residue to worry about.

Gaswatch Tvl212 Propane Level Indicator And Safety Gauge

Gaswatch Tvl212 Propane Level Indicator And Safety GaugeThis simple gauge solves the problem of knowing how much propane is in the tank before you start grilling. It solves the problem of running out of gas right in the middle of the barbecue. Unlike other systems involving pouring hot water on the tank to see where the level of gas is, this give you a precise indication. Once you have grilled a few times, you get the feel for how much gas it takes and can then guess if there is enough for the next time or if you need to refill the tank. Installation is as simple as attacing the guage to the tank and the regulator hose to the guage. No tool sare needed adn the guage can easily be transferred to other tanks to check thier levels. The needle immediately indicates the level in the tank. The device is simple and rugged enough to withstand a bit of harsh handling.

This product seems to do exactly as it is supposed to. I like the saftey feature and especially knowing when I need to refill propane, rather than running out during a cook out.

Bought two of these. On one the face plate to the guage cracked releasing gas. The other completely blew the face off leaking gas. These are hazzardous.

Gas is getting trapped in the mechanism. Gas still flows, but the gauge is stuck on full. Might be the tank. I don't know. It also seems to have an emergency shut-off valve. If you turn on the burners too quickly after turning on the propane tank, you will have no or restricted flow. You need to wait about 10 seconds between turning on the propane and turning on the burners. After having this for 6 months, it is a real pain. I would definitely try something else.

It's simple, place your hand flat on the side of the tank. Remember your hand has to be perfectly flat on the side of the tank as close to the middle as you can get, not the top or bottom. Now carefully monitor the gauge as the propane is flowing into the barbecue and for safety be sure stand as far away as possible from the hot barbecue. I'd normally give this thing 5 Stars but I noticed this safety gauge has no electrocardiogram EKG or ECG functionality included so I docked it one star..

As a bonus, if you interpret the reading correctly it will also check the flatulence level in your gas system. What more can you ask for a product under 20 bucks?

Air King 9145 6-Inch 2-Speed Clip-On Fan

Air King 9145 6-Inch 2-Speed Clip-On FanI purchased this fan for my daughter because her west-facing room gets especially hot in the evenings, even with A/C on. We had another fan that was too loud for her and that vibrated terribly when we placed it up high enough so she could feel the wind from it. This fan was the perfect solution! We clipped it on her bed and she can adjust it herself from off to high or low. It is the quietest fan in our house by far and she can still hear her Mozart good night music, which we play quietly, over the fan. The fan is easy to angle or adjust as well and the clip is strong once you've placed it so it stays in place. We are really happy with this purchase and my husband who can't stand to hear a pin drop is considering getting one for himself.

Update: We ordered a second one in 2011 and it is not identical to the one we ordered in 2008, but it is still effective, though somewhat less quiet.

In my search for a fan for my tiny room, I had specific criteria:

1) Relatively inexpensive

2) Quality parts

3) Quiet/silent (most important)

4) Low wattage

Misc criteria:

*)Free shipping

*)Service, 30-day $ back guarantee if I'm not satisfied

The Air King 9145 on Amazon matched my criteria precisely. I got it for $25, shipped & no tax. I received it fairly promptly (could care less; shipping was free).

Anyways, the box is pretty no-thrills and that's the way it should be. It comes with:

1) Box

2) Paper manual (note: you can download the manual online by searching "air king 9145 user manual" and go paperless :)

3) Fan main assembly

4) Clip.

The fan can be mounted by using either the clip seen in the picture, or using a screw. The screw-mount is on the back of the fan clip. I personally mounted it using the clip. I found that hanging the fan upside down on a thin piece of wood doesn't really work well. You need a "chunky" place for the clip to get a good grip and hold it. I found best of both worlds with the top of my desk. A pole could work also.

The fan has 0-1-2 settings. The manual advertises the fan uses 9 watts on setting "1" and 13 watts on setting "2". I can confirm this is 100% correct using my killawatt(TM) device.

-Noise-

I personally don't like a lot of air blowing on my face, so I used setting "1" and I like it. It blows enough air to keep me/my laptop cool without drying my eyes. On setting 1, the fan is pretty quiet, even for very-very-noise sensitive people like. It is not "dead silent", but "quiet". Setting 2 is a bit louder and I don't like putting it on setting 2 for that reason.

The fan setting is adjusted on the back of the fan head. I find myself baffled as to why the company decided to do a "0-2-1" setting instead of "0-1-2" which is more logical. Now it takes me twice as many "clicks" to get to my setting. Not a big deal (for me especially, since I use a remote control to turn that outlet on).

The wiring feels nice and thick and the build quality feels solid. I wish the plug didn't use a "three prong", since I have to get a special extension cord for it. :-(

Other than that, what can I say? It performs very well. I am very pleased with this purchase and would do it again!

Pros:

1) Reasonably priced

2) Free shipping, no tax if fulfilled from Amazon

3) Fan is quiet on setting 1

4) Fan wiring is thick and solid! Fan feels high quality

Negatives:

1) Could be cheaper? ($25 shipped, no tax is reasonable IMO, but for a 6" fan still pricey for some)

2) Only comes in white. This is my biggest complaint. I guess I could use a primer/black spray paint, but it would be great if it came in black :)

3) Clip spring could be a bit stronger.

4) Plug is three pronged (sucks for getting an extension cord)

The clamp is of poor design and quality compared to other brands I have owned. I am hoping the quality and lifespan of the motor is better, because that is always the weak link of these little fans.
