CDN Digital Programmable Probe Thermometer

Having burned out, drenched, accidentally kinked, and destroyed enough Polder probes to fill an oven, I finally threw in the towel and went elsewhere for a digital probe thermometer. CDN's Proaccurate may finally be the end of my search for a worthy successor.

Digital probe thermometers are a godsend for cooks who like to set it and forget it when cooking. You want that steak done to exactly 145 degrees? The probe thermometer will tell you. Just stick it in the meat, set the finished temp, and let the beep tell you when it's exactly medium rare. When it works, this kind of thermometer is indispensable.

Therein lies the rub, though. "When it works...." Most of the digital probe thermometers on the market suffer from the same chink in the armor--their probes are flimsy. Not only are the wires inside the probe itself thin when compared with the braided metal housing that holds them, but they can't take the heat, either. Most probes top out at a little over 380 degrees. You run the risk of burning it out when checking oil temperatures, something every probe should be able to do. And if your oven cycles its heat on and off, you could have it set for 350 but it may vary between 300 and 400 while cooking for twenty minutes or more. The result is a cooked probe.

But not with the CDN Proaccurate. The probe cord itself is significantly thicker (fifty percent or more, from my guess) and the temperature tops out almost a hundred degrees higher than the other guys at 482. Plus, unlike the other guys, this unit carries a full five year warranty--including the probe. You can't find that in any other digital probe thermometer I've seen.

* Alarm is not as loud as other units out there

* Probe still prone to water damage (no dishwasher)

* Hard to read times less than ten minutes due to shadow of case on digits near the right side

Overall, as a new user my review is positive. Time will tell concerning ruggedness, but I am hopeful given the clear difference in probes between the CDN and other units out there. This CDN model is almost worthy of five stars, but the lack of seconds on the timer is a bad design decision from my point of view. I know from experience with other units that watching those seconds roll by gave me some assurance from a distance that the timer was running.

So for all you Polder and Taylor users who are exasperated with probe failures on your thermometers, this CDN may be what you've been looking for.

I am a big fan of probe thermometers, and I have owned and ruined several of them; each a different brand. The CDN is the most accurate and can withstand high heat best on the market in this price range. I have owned this thermometer for over a year now, and in this time it has:

1. Been rained on at least 5 times.

2. Dropped in our pool.

3. Been hidden in our sandbox.

4. Been dropped on hot coals and backing partially melted.

Each time this thermometer has miraculously come back to life and worked perfectly! The original battery is still going.

If I had to purchase a new one, it would be this thermometer!

After much research into these devices, I decided to purchase the CDN brand for my husband as a gift. I chose this brand since it had a higher temperature range than that of the other brands available. This one goes up to 482degrees. So far he seems to love this thermometer. It seems very accurate in reading the internal temp of the meats. He loves that it allows him to program what type of meat and for beef the taste(rare,m.rare,med,well). The cable connecting the device to the probe seems to be pretty strong--braided wire. I have seen other devices by other brands that the cables "burn out". This was one of the deciding factors in purchasing the CDN brand. My husband loves the magnetic feature that allows him to stick it to the side of the oven! I am also excited to see the thermometer comes with a clip for candy making and frying. I havent had a chance to use it for this purpose yet, but it makes the device much more versatile & useful. The temperature display is quite large and easy to read...so it will work good for someone who cant read small print. I would actually give this product 4 &1/2 stars. The only reasons I would deduct half a star are: 1)the casing is plastic (cannot use on BBQ)and 2)the timer beeper isnt that loud (you cant hear it if upstairs or more than a room away, so you need to stay in earshot to hear the timer go off). All in all its a great product. I would recommend it. Buy it and you will never have dried out or undercooked meat again. Its well worth it! The chef in your life will thank you!

I found myself doing quite a bit of research before buying a digital probe thermometer... it seems that each brand and model has it's 'gotchas,' so unless you spend several hundred bucks on a laboratory grade thermometer, you're gonna have to deal with one or more disadvantages... unreliable probes, inaccurate readings, inconvenient menus, inadequate range, flimsy construction, etc. The questions I ended up asking myself were, what are the most desirable qualities, and what are the disadvantages I could live with?

First and foremost, I wanted one that was reliable. Unfortunately, every single model contained reviews from folks whose thermometers didn't make it a month let alone a year. So the next step was to look at the frequency of problems, and perhaps more important, the warranty. CDN was the only one with a five year warranty (one that they seem to cheerfully honor, judging by feedback), so that went a very long way toward making my decision.

Next was temperature range... most digital probe thermometers peak out at under 392 degrees. I didn't feel that was enough so there was another point in favor of the CDN, which is one of the very few that tops out at 482 degrees.

Finally, it came with a metal clip for use on the rim of saucepans, stockpots and so forth... why this cheap but useful little accessory is an optional extra purchase with many other models is a testament to the idiocy and greed of companies who want to get the product out there for the cheapest possible price and then hit you up later for things they should have provided in the first place.

Now that I've lived with the CDN Proaccurate a month or so, I have to say I'm pleased. Tested against two other thermometers the CDN seems accurate, and though it's response seems a bit slow, it's not really meant for instant readings anyway. Other minor gripes? Well, it's not very intuitive when it comes to setting some of the functions... but once you use it a few times you get used to that. Probably my major disappointment is that the timer counts only hours and minutes, no seconds... this coupled with the very small blinking indicator means that it's difficult to tell when it's running. As I said, these are minor gripes... overall I'm extremely pleased with this purchase.

The thermometer looks really good at first. Great range for candy making (unlike one of the more inexpensive models that Amazon sells) and reasonable wire length. For the past two months its been great. Then it suddenly gave poor measurements (based on salt free ice water, fully equilibrated, and salt free boiling water). It is approx 25 degrees below what it should read. So I'm sending it back. The unit comes with a 5 year warranty. We'll see what type of response I get.

Update: ended up getting a warranty replacement. This too worked for a while and then failed. Stay away

I will forever buy George Foreman grills I've had a few (each worn out from so much use). This is the first time I've bought this model I am frustrated with the on/off switch and the cook at high temp, then cool down for a bit, then cook at high temp again. These are beautiful matches however BEE warned on some of the match boxes they put the price/information sticker right on the design and it is impossible to get off without ruining it! Maverick Rotisserie Thermometer

The idea and workmanship for this are good, but the collar would not fit on my Weber grill where the lid overlaps the main fire box. The problems created by the rotation of the rotisserie are solved with the collar, thus it would not work on my grill. The product description should contain a list of the most popular grill models that it will fit.

Had read a lot about this and considered taping my ET-732 to my rotisseries but for the price it was a no brainier.

Have only used it the once on my Weber kettle and it worked a treat. Little bending of the rotisserie sides and away it went.

Definitely saved me opening the lid too often, temp was accurate (compared to what the Thermapen was showing) and the chicken was my best yet.

Got this to replace my Oregon scientific which died. I went through 3 Oregon Scientifics already but one I gave to my brother because I liked it so much, despite it not being reliable long term.

This one has a problem with temperature accuracy or has really high temperature-reading latency which doesn't make it very reliable for steaks. I think it even gave me wrong readings on the beer-can chicken as it didn't come out as good as it came out when I was reading the temps with the oregon scientific.

Another annoyance with this is that if you have it set to monitor the temperature, you can't use the timer at the same time.

Now that I have this, I miss my Oregon Scientific and will probably buy another one and keep this as a backup.

Unfortunately, I can't return this because I threw away the packaging so be sure you keep the packaging for more grilling attempts.

Taylor Digital Fork Thermometer

The Taylor Professional Digital Fork Thermometer is an accurate and handy device for measuring the temperature of meats, liquids and anything that will not damage the fork!

I checked the calibration by inserting it in a pan of boiling water and it measured 213 degrees. Solid ice will take it below freezing.

The hold button is very handy as the temperature will start to change rapidly as you remove the fork from the medium being measured.

The ability to measure in either the Celsius (centigrade) or Farenheit scale will be nice for some people although I prefer Farenheit for cooking.

The ONLY reason I only gave it 4 stars was that it is a bit awkward to see the displayed temperature while the fork is in the meat on the grill. The angle of the handle is not quite right. However, I can now perfectly cook any kind of meat on the grill!

I used this for years, and thought it was pretty good. Then I got a CDN Proaccurate Stainless Digital Thermometer, and realized how wrong I had been.

Never having had an instant-read thermometer before, I thought it was normal to sit there for almost a minute waiting for the temperature to stabilize. Of course, that minute is a big deal if you've taken your steak off the heat and then have to put it back on.

Also, the tines are big, and you have to get a fair amount of them embedded into the meat to get an accurate temperature. You wind up putting big holes in the meat, which then leak a ton of juices. And for thinner steaks, it's hard to navigate in at an angle that lets you get enough of the tines in the middle.

For those reviewers who suggest it's great to have only one utensil: you really don't want to flip steak with a fork anyway. Every time you puncture the steak, you're losing juices. You're much better off with a grill spatula, and a fast thermometer with a small probe.

Actually, it made for a difficult moment when I was hosting and BBQing a rib roast. Because the unit malfunctioned and without any other therm. I had to guess the time. Luckily I guessed right.

Right out of the box it won't register any temperature. I changed the battery thinking that the one that came with it might be low, but no dice. Great idea but obviously made very poorly. Bayou Classics Cast Iron Jumbo 20 in. Skillet

I was SO looking forward to receiving this pan, as I read a review that touted it as absolutely the best pizza pan ever. Well, I should have paid more attention to the previous review...Titanic is an understatement! This pan is so big, that it doesn't fit inside my wall oven. So if your plan is to use it in your oven, measure it first! The oven needs to be a minimum of 22" wide. From rim to rim the pan measures 21", from outer edge of handle to handle, it measures 22-1/2". Looks like the Boy Scouts will be getting a donation from us!! I'm giving it 4 stars because it is a beautiful pan!

The first skillet I received was badly warped, but Amazon sent a replacement right away.

These cast iron skillets are not "seasoned" which is what I was looking for. They are rough when new and require a fair amount of work before curing: Removing the protective wax coating, sanding the inside (is a must), coating with vegetable oil and then curing at 500f in an oven for an hour. Read on the web "Cast Iron Jack McGrew's" method for curing cast iron. If done correctly they are excellent and the final product is better than the pre-seasoned skillets.

At 20 inches and 33lbs these skillets are huge but we always fill it up; eight to ten slices of french toast or two pounds+ of bacon or three to five pounds of potatoes.

For even heat control, use over a sturdy gas burner (Bayou Classic's Banjo cooker) or a fire grate with low coals.

Skillet was just as advertised and good quality. The packing left a lot to be desired and one broke in transit, which Amazon replaced. Hopefully the vendor will get the message that a simple cardboard box is inadequate for an item of this size and weight, even if it is made from cast iron.

Only negative is that the center of the skillet is higher than outside edges, however this allows the grease to run to the outside edge of the skillet. I used this skillet on an antique Kalimazoo Cook Stove, it worked great, had no problems cooking 2 pound bacon then 2 dozen eggs. The design on the bottom is great since I display it hanging on a wall. If you are going to use it on a regular stove, you may need to make a frame work to hold it above the countertop to keep it from scorching it.

I bought this since I am trying to get away from using Teflon coated pans. One thing to realize this pan is small. Make sure you understand just how small 4.7 inches is. Non-stick pans can not handle the high heat cooking that I do. Once seasoned properly, actually quite easy to do, this and others I have purchased are slicker than any non-stick I ever had before, even professional non-stick. Non-stick is great for things done at no more than medium heat. Any higher heat setting destroys them soon. These can handle it all.

Chef's Design Reversible Hard-Coat Anodized Double Burner Grill/Griddle

I bought this griddle over 8 years ago for $39. It has been very useful with my electric stove for making many pancakes, burgers, grilled cheese, etc. I can cook 5-6 pancakes at a time, burgers & buns together, 4 grilled cheese sandwiches. Unlike the non-stick model 3560 also listed on this site, you can use this over high heat without any damage to it. Unlike the other review, I don't find it hard to clean. Over time, it retains some darkness of color (reminds me of cast iron), but it is not as heavy nor do you have the rust issues. Cleanup is easy with my blue Scotch-Brite multi-purpose scrub sponge. I'm planning on buying one for my sister and was delighted to find the same griddle available.

it does seem like it's made to last. It has more of a cast iron feel to it than my old nonstick grill. I was looking for one that wasn't going to flake or peel and liked the idea of it being double sided. I didn't have an indoor grill before this. At first it didn't seem to work well because my pancakes stuck a little and were not browning the same way the did on the nonstick, but then I adjusted how much cooking spray I used and made sure I preheated it very well before putting the batter on and they came out better. I've only cooked hotdogs on the grill side but they came out fine. It's heavy and needs to cool down before moving to the sink for cleanup, but that's expected.

I've used this griddle 3 times now since ordering it earlier in the summer. I've cooked chicken breasts, hamburgers, and pancakes on it and they've all turned out spectacular! The trick is to make sure the heat is low to medium; do not crank up the heat.

Also, the griddle has to be cooled off before cleaning. So far, I haven't had a problem with the clean-up. It's a bit heavy to handle at the sink, but that is expected.

It's my first stop-top griddle and I am very happy with it!!

Very disappointed with this product. Did not look new and is of poor quality. Is awkward to handle and not well-balanced. The screw was not as pictured; it is a big knob that is frustratingly difficult to turn. I thought the handle would swivel to fold; it does not. You have to remove the screw completely, remove the handle, and then place two wooden pegs into two holes, and then put the screw back in.

I almost did not order this due to a reviewers complaint regarding the handle being difficult to swivel. I went ahead though due to the storability of the folding handle feature. Storability is a big factor for fulltime rvers.

I received the peel and found the screw very easy to turn due to the heavy large black plastic head. The handle has two sturdy dowel pins attached that are quite easy to line up and insert into the corresponding holes on the board. This is a safety feature that prevents the peel from accidentally swiveling while in use.

The peel is beautiful and very easy to use. The directions state it can be used as a serving tray but I would be reluctant to cut anything while on the tray and damage the beautiful smooth surface.

Of course it will work well for sliding pizza on the grill as well as sliding no knead bread dough into the oven.

We are very happy with this peel and finds it easy to use.

Received peel and had to correct following items to permit use:

1. Locating pins in handle had fallen out. One of the pins was too long and had to be cut. Glued back in place.

2. Press nut on peel that handle bolts to had fallen out. Applied glue and pressed back in place.

3. Grommet for hanging strap hole in handle had fallen out. Glued and pressed back in place.

4. Pivot point hole in handle was not drilled completely through. Re-drilled.

In addition, picture does not show the large black knob used to attach handle to peel.

After repair work, peel is useable and attractive to look at but folding handle function has created more problems than it's worth. I suspect before too many uses I will be bolting the handle permanently to the peel.

I ordered 2 of these because the sale price was what I was willing to pay. If you overlook the fact that the handle really does not actually swivel, it works fine. It might be because the two little dowels on mine are not equal sizes. One is twice as long as the other. The instruction states that you should be able to loosen the knob such that the handle will swivel, but the dowels don't actually release until the screw is completely free. Is this a big deal for me? Not really. It's not too hard to remove the handle and store it in 2 pieces. It would be more difficult to reattach it in the 'swivel' position as you have to line up the dowels, and do so blindly. I just leave it in one piece. If you are buying this thinking it will swivel easily, it will not. That said, it feels pretty sturdy, and it will do the job well.

This grill was well worth the money. I use it for tailgatting and camping and it works really well. It cooks evenly and the clean up is so much easier than a grill with the wire grill top. It is so convienent to carry and store vs the big bulky units. Just remember that it doesn't have a lid to shut when it is in use. I wished it had a lid to keep the heat in but that would be my only negative comment and it seems to work just fine without.

We were extremely disappointed with our purchase of the George Foreman portable propane grill. I suppose it was our own fault, but we did not realize the top/lid was not removable. Thus, there is no way to keep the heat 'in', so to speak.

Similar to what we've used for years, but ... the turner part isn't long enough. Like the mostly-stainless construction (all our previous units eventually rusted), but it's still not what we're looking for. Usable, but just not right.

Bought these to replace a 20 year old pair of similar tongs I use when grilling. Can't believe how cheaply made they are. The spatula portion is extremely thin and my guess is if you dropped them it would dent or bend. It does what I want, but my guess is they won't last very long.

Spatula portion was very flimsy. It bent the first time i tried to scrape under a burger. Love the concept but you should buy a better quality tong.

Goo Gone Oven & Grill Cleaner, 14oz

Even if you have a self-cleaning oven, you know that (1) the cleaning cycle does not get all the grime and (2) you may not want to run it frequently as it takes hours and (3) the racks cannot be put through the cleaning cycle. So "Goo Gone" Cleaner works to clean up those spills. Just spray on the foam, let it sit for a while to dissolve the carbon and grease, and wipe it away. You're not supposed to line your oven floor with foil. If you read the instruction book, it tells you that clearly. So eventually, you are going to get a spill. If you treat the spill with Goo Gone, you will maintain a clean oven Burnt spills are mostly carbon and need a strong alkali cleaner to break down the crust; this does the job. But it's relatively fume-free, which is nice.

Your broiler pan, if you have one of those enamel and steel pans, is also difficult to keep clean, and this does a very good job removing the black crust that won't come off after you do a regular wash.

It also is useful for barbecue grills. I put mine out on the driveway on newspaper and spray away. Then a quick brush with a wire grill brush and rinse off with the hose.

This will help you maintain your oven like new and keep your grill ready to go for summer barbecue.

My oven hadn't been cleaned in years. I used this product and it's very good. Because my oven was in bad shape I cleaned it 3 times in a row and it was spotless. The smell wasn't great but definitely not as bad as other oven cleaners.

Like the other reviewers, I bought this because of the quality of their other products.

After spraying this on and leaving it for 45 minutes, the result was that the baked-on grease was "weakened", but I still had to use a Scotch-Brite to scrub it off. It does NOT easily wipe off as the label claims. I cannot believe that this is the best thing available on the market.

Folks, seriously question the 5-star reviews here, and the people behind them.

I bought this product because the other goo gone products I've used in the past have worked. This does not. It removed the surface grease, but I could have done that with a scrubby sponge and some dish soap. It didn't touch the baked on stuff. Worse was the clean up. The more I wiped the more foam I got. I finally used a whole roll of paper towel to wipe out the foam, then went back with a damp cloth to wipe the residue-even then I created more foam. The only thing to say for it was the fumes were mild, but it still made my eyes water a bit when reaching into the back of the oven. I liked the look of the spray nozzle thinking I would have more control over it. I did, but it was a pain to cover everything. This product is not worth the time or the effort.

Char-Broil Live Fire Heavy Duty Meat Hook

Overall I'm very happy with this product. Nothing really stands out about it, but I also have no serious complaints about the construction. If anything, I can see a leather cord being more versatile to hang the tool from, versus the rather bulky hanging hook. The rivets securing both hooks to the handle seem secure, and there is no wiggle at the junctions. Made in China.

I bought this based on the price, so my overall impression is, "great product for six bucks!" Sadly, the cost has more than doubled from when I ordered this on 4/25/12 (with Prime shipping) for $6.57. I can't say I would purchase this at the current price point.

TEKTON 7063 Detail Brush Set, 5-Piece

They're smaller than you probably think and they may remind you of something you'd buy at the dollar store, but they're decent and they work. I knew I'd be near throwing these away after using them to clean a 27 year old engine bay, so that didn't bother me. if its a quick, throw-away job, these are fine, but if you're looking for something longterm, spend more money.

I bought these brushes to go with my shoe shine kit. I only use the nylon brushes, but the other ones were a bonus.

Love this little kit for the money, I have a set I use for my cars and garage. The nylon brush is great for detailing interior vents trim. I just bought a second kit for cleaning electronics and other household items. Sturdy handles and all my bristles are still intact. Again, great stuff for the money!

I needed a set of smaller brushes for cleaning smaller items. I use a Dremel tool wire brush for some small parts, but needed something to supplement that for hard to reach corners and other recess areas. This set of brushes covers the entire stiffness range and in that respect the set surpasses my expectations. They do the job as I expected, and seem sturdy enough.

I LOVE these brushes. They are so handy to use on small parts such as misting heads or in detailing a car dashboard. The bristles are securely kept in the handles and don't come out when using. The Brass brush is my favorite but the stainless steel one is great also. The large nylon is super convenient in clearing debris and the fingernail brush is great for shoes, fabric or fingernails. :) This is a great buy that you will USE.
