CDN Digital Programmable Probe Thermometer

CDN Digital Programmable Probe ThermometerHaving burned out, drenched, accidentally kinked, and destroyed enough Polder probes to fill an oven, I finally threw in the towel and went elsewhere for a digital probe thermometer. CDN's Proaccurate may finally be the end of my search for a worthy successor.

Digital probe thermometers are a godsend for cooks who like to set it and forget it when cooking. You want that steak done to exactly 145 degrees? The probe thermometer will tell you. Just stick it in the meat, set the finished temp, and let the beep tell you when it's exactly medium rare. When it works, this kind of thermometer is indispensable.

Therein lies the rub, though. "When it works...." Most of the digital probe thermometers on the market suffer from the same chink in the armor--their probes are flimsy. Not only are the wires inside the probe itself thin when compared with the braided metal housing that holds them, but they can't take the heat, either. Most probes top out at a little over 380 degrees. You run the risk of burning it out when checking oil temperatures, something every probe should be able to do. And if your oven cycles its heat on and off, you could have it set for 350 but it may vary between 300 and 400 while cooking for twenty minutes or more. The result is a cooked probe.

But not with the CDN Proaccurate. The probe cord itself is significantly thicker (fifty percent or more, from my guess) and the temperature tops out almost a hundred degrees higher than the other guys at 482. Plus, unlike the other guys, this unit carries a full five year warranty--including the probe. You can't find that in any other digital probe thermometer I've seen.

Pros:

* Probe withstands highest heat I've seen offered--482 degrees F--and is far more hefty than competitors

* Meat selector settings (Chicken, Beef, Lamb, Turkey, Pork, Veal) with doneness levels

* Accurate. Approved for Food Service Industry usage

* Twenty-four hour count down and up timer

* Large display

* Includes wall mount, magnetic attachment to metal surfaces, and is free-standing

* Good price point

* Five year warranty

* CDN was swift in answering e-mailed questions I had about the unit

Cons:

* No seconds displayed on timer

* Design won't be confused with anything coming out of Europe :-)

* Non-intuitive operation on a couple functions

* Plastic case is not heat-resistant

* Tiny indicator makes it hard to tell if the unit is running when using timer

* Alarm is not as loud as other units out there

* Probe still prone to water damage (no dishwasher)

* Hard to read times less than ten minutes due to shadow of case on digits near the right side

Overall, as a new user my review is positive. Time will tell concerning ruggedness, but I am hopeful given the clear difference in probes between the CDN and other units out there. This CDN model is almost worthy of five stars, but the lack of seconds on the timer is a bad design decision from my point of view. I know from experience with other units that watching those seconds roll by gave me some assurance from a distance that the timer was running.

So for all you Polder and Taylor users who are exasperated with probe failures on your thermometers, this CDN may be what you've been looking for.

I am a big fan of probe thermometers, and I have owned and ruined several of them; each a different brand. The CDN is the most accurate and can withstand high heat best on the market in this price range. I have owned this thermometer for over a year now, and in this time it has:

1. Been rained on at least 5 times.

2. Dropped in our pool.

3. Been hidden in our sandbox.

4. Been dropped on hot coals and backing partially melted.

Each time this thermometer has miraculously come back to life and worked perfectly! The original battery is still going.

If I had to purchase a new one, it would be this thermometer!

After much research into these devices, I decided to purchase the CDN brand for my husband as a gift. I chose this brand since it had a higher temperature range than that of the other brands available. This one goes up to 482degrees. So far he seems to love this thermometer. It seems very accurate in reading the internal temp of the meats. He loves that it allows him to program what type of meat and for beef the taste(rare,m.rare,med,well). The cable connecting the device to the probe seems to be pretty strong--braided wire. I have seen other devices by other brands that the cables "burn out". This was one of the deciding factors in purchasing the CDN brand. My husband loves the magnetic feature that allows him to stick it to the side of the oven! I am also excited to see the thermometer comes with a clip for candy making and frying. I havent had a chance to use it for this purpose yet, but it makes the device much more versatile & useful. The temperature display is quite large and easy to read...so it will work good for someone who cant read small print. I would actually give this product 4 &1/2 stars. The only reasons I would deduct half a star are: 1)the casing is plastic (cannot use on BBQ)and 2)the timer beeper isnt that loud (you cant hear it if upstairs or more than a room away, so you need to stay in earshot to hear the timer go off). All in all its a great product. I would recommend it. Buy it and you will never have dried out or undercooked meat again. Its well worth it! The chef in your life will thank you!

I found myself doing quite a bit of research before buying a digital probe thermometer... it seems that each brand and model has it's 'gotchas,' so unless you spend several hundred bucks on a laboratory grade thermometer, you're gonna have to deal with one or more disadvantages... unreliable probes, inaccurate readings, inconvenient menus, inadequate range, flimsy construction, etc. The questions I ended up asking myself were, what are the most desirable qualities, and what are the disadvantages I could live with?

First and foremost, I wanted one that was reliable. Unfortunately, every single model contained reviews from folks whose thermometers didn't make it a month let alone a year. So the next step was to look at the frequency of problems, and perhaps more important, the warranty. CDN was the only one with a five year warranty (one that they seem to cheerfully honor, judging by feedback), so that went a very long way toward making my decision.

Next was temperature range... most digital probe thermometers peak out at under 392 degrees. I didn't feel that was enough so there was another point in favor of the CDN, which is one of the very few that tops out at 482 degrees.

Finally, it came with a metal clip for use on the rim of saucepans, stockpots and so forth... why this cheap but useful little accessory is an optional extra purchase with many other models is a testament to the idiocy and greed of companies who want to get the product out there for the cheapest possible price and then hit you up later for things they should have provided in the first place.

Now that I've lived with the CDN Proaccurate a month or so, I have to say I'm pleased. Tested against two other thermometers the CDN seems accurate, and though it's response seems a bit slow, it's not really meant for instant readings anyway. Other minor gripes? Well, it's not very intuitive when it comes to setting some of the functions... but once you use it a few times you get used to that. Probably my major disappointment is that the timer counts only hours and minutes, no seconds... this coupled with the very small blinking indicator means that it's difficult to tell when it's running. As I said, these are minor gripes... overall I'm extremely pleased with this purchase.

The thermometer looks really good at first. Great range for candy making (unlike one of the more inexpensive models that Amazon sells) and reasonable wire length. For the past two months its been great. Then it suddenly gave poor measurements (based on salt free ice water, fully equilibrated, and salt free boiling water). It is approx 25 degrees below what it should read. So I'm sending it back. The unit comes with a 5 year warranty. We'll see what type of response I get.

Update: ended up getting a warranty replacement. This too worked for a while and then failed. Stay away

The Between Room Ventilator (BRV) is a low-cost solution to common air pressure problems.

The Between Room Ventilator is a low-cost solution to common air pressure problems.I expected a much higher quality of workmanship since the item, considering materials, is very expensive. It's a simple design made of plastic and a couple pieces of thin foam. It was a little difficult to install. You have to cut the wall holes almost exactly right since the mounting holes don't leave any room for error. One of the reasons I bought this was for the claim in the description that the "acoustical foam partitions...completely block light". It doesn't and as a matter of fact it leaks light due to the foam not being glued down properly. I didn't notice this defect until after I had installed it. The light shines straight through the areas where the glue was missed. This is very annoying when I'm sitting in the dimmer of the two rooms. I purchased this on Amazon from Condar who is also the manufacturer. I emailed them through Amazon's "Contact Seller" link with no response after 7 days. I have no doubt that Amazon would take this back but after cutting holes in my walls I'm pretty much stuck with it since the seller is nonresponsive. Look elsewhere since this product should cost $10 max and probably be of better quality.

AS advertised, although a bit pricey for a all plastic product, also beware the seller will add a $5.00 charge labeled Amazon Fee.

Bayou Classic Stainless Steel Grill Tool

Bayou Classic 1040-PDQ Stainless-Steel Grill ScraperSlow going with this item, however, it does an excellent job of cleaning a grill, one metal rod at a time. Good for getting the carbon build-up under the grill rods too. Have used it on three different sizes of grills and it works well on all of them.

I added this grill scraper to the collection of devices we use in our commercial kitchen to see what would happen....when I left that establishment a few weeks ago I didn't have the heart to take my grill scraper with me. Everyone there uses it, even the owner who originally yelled about the appearance of yet another gadget in the kitchen. If I could make one suggestion it would be that it would be nice to have a grab handle/bar in the middle for additional leverage since we used the scraper while the grill was on (had to...we have a small grill and put out an average of 80-100 plates a night). Good for home and small restaurant use both!

Rosle Hook Set for BBQ Grill - Set of 5

Rosle Hook Set for BBQ Grill - Set of 5These hooks were exactly what we needed for our grill tools. They hang perfectly on the edge of the grill, out of the way but at easy reach!

We have a grill that has a very large bar for hanging utensils. We could not find any hooks that would fit over it. These are exactly what we needed. The hook for the grill is quite large (maybe 2") to accommodate a larger grill. They're covered with rubber so that they don't scratch. This works well for us.

Bought this product at the Texas State Fair. Works great. I am buying more at Amazon. The wholesale company does not sell to individuals except at the State Fair. I recommend this product 100%.

Chef's Kitchen Cordless Motorized Outdoor Grill Cleaning Brush

Chef's Kitchen Cordless Motorized Outdoor Grill Cleaning BrushI don't know how this made it into the market. The motor is so weak, if you press down at all, the bristles stop spinning. If you use a light touch to keep the bristles turning, it doesn't even come close to cleaning the grill. VERY weak!

This sounds cool, but not so much. As soon as the spinning brush hits the grill it stops spinning. Not helpful in cleaning the grill at all. We ended up donating it to charity and buying a new mega grill brush from Bed Bath & Beyond that is fabulous. Your best off not purchasing this product, sorry.

Unless you need a place to waste 8AA batteries, pass on this useles junk. My wife won one at work. I put the batteries in it and tested it AGAINST A PAPER TOWEL! It was enough to stop the brush. Just for laughs I tried it on the grille and of course it is WAY too weak to do any actual cleaning. I took the batteries out and threw it away. This is more of a scam than an actual product.

As an aside, don't you wish sites like Amason would allow "No Star" reviews? Why don't they? This product would definitely be No Stars.

Presto 09020 Cool Touch Electric Indoor Grill

Presto 09020 Cool Touch Electric Indoor Grilli just received my presto grill and i'm already cooking on it. this is my second attempt at a indoor grill and this is by far the best over the first one. this is a great grill! i've already grilled chicken, steak, and pork chops. it came out fantastic! the first grill had cold spots and did not seem to get extremely hot. this grill gets HOT! the heat is evenly distributed across the entire surface thanks to the embedded element and the cooking area is very large. i grilled 4 large sirloin steaks at one time. the rubber pads under the legs also keeps the grill from sliding around. i like the fact that you have the temps displayed on the thermostat all the way up to 400 degrees. dip tray is nice and the cleanup is quick and simple. the nonstick surface is superb on everything thing i have prepared so far. and amazons price is far less over some of the other indoor grills i've looked at. i am going to post some pics soon of this fantastic grill in action. overall i'm very impressed with this presto indoor grill's performance and price. THANKS AMAZON!

I bought this to try something different from the typical George Foreman type grill. I was so sick and tired of trying to clean the Foreman grill I already own with the non-removable plates! Hate it! Although there are several brands of tabletop grills that do have removable plates, most of them are overpriced. I absolutely will not spend $100 on an indoor tabletop grill.

I came across this one on Amazon and, after much searching and reading, decided I'd go ahead and give it a try. This is a single sided grill with no lid that comes down on top of it so you have to cook one side of your food at a time. Different from what I've been used to.

So far, so good. I haven't had time to use it a whole lot yet but what I've cooked on it so far has been good. Chicken and steaks. I love using these tabletop grills versus the oven or broiler or outdoor BBQ grill so I'm sure I'll use it for everything. Burgers, fish, chops, chicken, steak, vegetables, etc.

It is super simple to use. Plug in the cord to the grill (like an electric skillet) and plug the cord into an outlet and there you go. It heats up quickly to 400 degrees (or less) and is ready to go in no time. It is lightweight and super, super easy to clean! Thank goodness because that was my main reason for buying a new tabletop grill in the first place. It is totally dishwasher safe but I just rinse mine off in the sink. It has a non stick coating which is fine so far. I did wonder if heating up only to 400 degrees was going to be hot enough to cook steaks but it is just fine. I made them last night and they were great. Because you have to cook each side of the meat, it does take longer than the Foreman type grills but I don't mind that at all. Gives me time to be making the side dishes. The sides are made of plastic. Not sure if they'll hold up well over time or not.

For the price (around $35) I am pleased with this purchase so far. As long as it holds up for a reasonable period of time that is! We'll see as time goes by. If I have any problems with it, I'll come back and amend this rating.

Everyone has reasons for their purchases but for me it was about time and convenience. Although we love it, there isn't always time for the charcoal grill. What I can't get in flavor from charcoal, I make up for in great seasonings!

This grill is a nice alternative, no matter what the weather. Rain, heat or limited time can keep me indoors sometimes and I grew tired of not having the ability to grill when I wanted to. This grill fit the bill perfectly for 2 people and performs well. Haven't noticed any cold spots.

Great for chicken, burgers, steak, practically anything you would do on an outdoor grill. Veggies come out fantastic. Have grilled squash, zucchini and onions so far brushed with a little olive oil. The secret is letting it get hot before use.

My preference is to heat the grill to 350, not 400 as the booklet suggests. With chicken breasts, I heat it up and brush a little olive oil directly on the grill. I put on the marinated chicken, place a little foil tent over the meat and cook until the breasts internal temp reaches 165, turning once. YUM! Juicy and not burnt. And I get those nice grill marks! (Be aware dark meat requires a higher internal temp of 180 degrees for safe consumption.) You don't have to foil it, but I think the foil enhances how juicy the chicken ends up...

Clean up is simple...I wish everything were as easy to clean as this little grill and my Nesco electric pressure cooker!

Excellante Flat Boar Bristles

Excellante 3-Inch Flat Boar BristlesIts a shame when a retailer/supplier advertises a product worth taking your money in exchange for some

thing that should be sold in a "dollar store." It is cheap. A few months after receiving this brush, the bristles totally separated from the handle wherein, it was anchored. Its useless to me now. I recommend no one buy this brush.

This is a really good product. The reason why I gave it 3 star is because the head(dard brown part) came off the handle while washing it... It was put together via glue and I thought oh that was cheap. Good thing I have some glue on hand and just put it back together. Also every now and then I get lose bristles while using it...

CHEF-LIGHT OUTDOOR BBQ HANDLE BAR FOR WEBER GRILL CHEFLIGHT NEW IN BOX

CHEF-LIGHT OUTDOOR BBQ HANDLE BAR FOR WEBER GRILL CHEFLIGHT NEW IN BOXThis device fit great on my new Brinkmann grill. It was easy to install, needing only the addition of a couple of flat washers because the heads of the original screws were larger than these. When I installed the batteries and tried it out, nothing happened. Seems these may have been in storage for some time so the electrical connections were a bit oxidized because as I was troubleshooting it started to work on its own. My only wish is that instead of incandescent flashlight bulbs it used LEDs, but I would expect that with infrequent use the 6 C cells will last a long time. Made in USA!

Traeger Digital Thermostat Kit BAC236

Traeger Digital Thermostat Kit BAC236I own the Traeger Junior, and I was unhappy with the medium setting on the three position temperature switch (it was too hot, often close to 300 degrees), so I decided to upgrade.

I recommend installing the new controller by removing the hopper:

1. Remove the two screws on the old controller.

2. Remove the pellet hopper (it's only held on by 4 screws). I also removed the 4 screws on the bottom of the hopper to make the final installation easier.

3. Feed the old controller through the front of the hopper. This will allow you to completely remove the pellet hopper and get it out of the way.

4. Install the temperature probe (RTD) per the directions; the diagram isn't great, but it's much better than the written directions.

5. Cut all the the zip ties.

6. To keep from improperly connecting the wires or having to study the wiring diagram, simply disconnect the old wires (pull apart the molex connectors with a slight rocking motion)and reconnect the new wires ONE AT A TIME.

6. At this point your done with the connections. I turned on my Traeger briefly to make sure the fans turned on and the LED illuminated. Make sure there aren't any wires interfering with either fan.

7. I used lots of zip-ties to clean up the installation.

8. Feed the new controller through the hole in the hopper.

9. Attach the hopper

10. Attach the controller

11. Look under the hopper to make sure there aren't any wires interfering with the fan(use more zip-ties if necessary), and install the bottom of the hopper.

I am a college student, so I bought the junior Traeger model, which does not come with the digital thermostat kit. After smoking my first set of ribs I went straight to my computer and bought this because controlling the temperature with the 3-speed was quite a pain. Many burger patties and racks of ribs later I am still completely satisfied with my purchase.

Note: This takes a bit of work to install, so unless you are at least somewhat comfortable working with electronics then I would find a friend who is to install it. Still, don't let this deter you from buying it. The kit does not require any soldering to install.

I love my Traeger! I was looking forward to upgrading my lil Tex and adding the benefits of this. When the product arrived the fuse and fuse holder was missing from the main PCB. I called Traeger and they did send me a replacement right away. My smoker was down for a week while I waited on shipping.

This does allow the smoker to have finer control of the temperature and it does allow the smoker to get hotter that the standard temperature control. That is important when trying to cook outside in MN in January. Yep, its that good! Better quality control or overnight shipping would have made this a Love it!

Want Traeger Digital Thermostat Kit BAC236 Discount?

I have been debating the purchase of the thermostat for a couple of years. I was too cheap to spend the money, but I was continually frustrated because the grill would run out of fire when it was set to smoke. Now the grill stays burning when it is set to a low temperature.

The installation instructions are pretty stinky; I could not figure out which holes the instructions referred to on the grill. They indicate a sticker next to the hole. Guess what? The grill has been used for several years and the smoke has destroyed every sticker that may be referred to inside the grill. The temperature probe is installed vertically at the end of the grill next to the grating. Once I figured out the details, the installation was very easy.

Bottom line, a great purchase. It is very nice to see the temperature from inside the house.

Rosle Dual Functioning Mini Grill and Oven Thermometer, Set of 4

Rosle Dual Functioning Mini Grill and Oven Thermometer, Set of 4I grill a lot and in general I am a gadget guy. I have a couple of the wireless temperature probe sensor thermometers, and I have a fork type thermometer. I seen these and thought this would be something that would be easy to use. I have only used them 3 times. I like my steak medium rare. When I took my steak off when the thermometer showed medium rare and after the steak sit for a few minutes, it was medium/medium well. The next time I grilled I used the thermometers in conjunction with my fork thermometer. When my fork thermometer was at the desired temp the Rosle thermometer dial had hardly move. I was grilling 4 steak also and each thermometer dial was slightly different. I do not regret buying them, maybe they will work out eventually. If they break, would I replace them, no. A plus and the main reason I bought them, they can be left on the grill during cooking (I only insert on the last flip of the steak).

Fire Wire Stainless Steel Flexible Grilling Skewer, Set of 2

Fire Wire Stainless Steel Flexible Grilling Skewer, Set of 2I bought these in Amazon's 4 for 3 promo and they work really well. I loaded mine full of vegetables and grilled them easily. The only problem I had was having heavier vegetables (squash) on top pushing down the light vegetables (bell peppers), but that wasn't a flaw with the skewer and was my own fault. One thing to remember is to chop your meat and vegggies larger then you would for normal skewers. The wire isn't that big around, but the pointy end is thicker than I was used to.

Overall, I really liked these. They do stay cool enough to turn with your bare hands. They are large, but I do think I need more. They aren't as pretty as your normal skewers if you want to serve them to individual people, but they work for a crowd. Great product.

Gave this product a try and I am not a big fan. When you fill this wire skewer with food it spins around and ends up not cooking evenly on all sides of the veggies and meat. You also can not leave a little space between the food like a traditional skewer so parts are not cooked in the middle. I also do not like having to swing the food around and onto the grill. A cute concept I just personally prefer a nice basic skewer

Buy Fire Wire Stainless Steel Flexible Grilling Skewer, Set of 2 Now

Unlike the way the item is pictured, loaded from end to end with meet and vegetables, typical skewer cooking leaves a bit of space between the items being cooked. When we attempted to do so on these things, all the food just slides together in the middle. We decided to pack the food on more tightly, and we ended up with food that was nicely grilled on the edges, but not done in the center. Being able to marinate more easily is a plus, but I think I'll just go back to marinating before we put the food on a nice flat bladed skewer.

I was so tired of wooden skewers and having to soak them. These skewers can be wound so they fit inside tupperware or ziplocs for marinating. and in any configuration on the grill. And no presoak needed. The only problem with it is that the more food you put on the skewers, the harder it is to flip or rotate everything evenly.

Want Fire Wire Stainless Steel Flexible Grilling Skewer, Set of 2 Discount?

All I can say is WOW! I was skeptical in making this purchase because I've never had a good experience with shish-kebob skewers. The main reason I decided to buy these though, is because I have a round charcoal grill that is very inconvenient to cook on with regular skewers. I bought 4 of them, and after using them once, I'll probably buy more as gifts for friends and family. 4 skewers full of chicken, strawberries, and pineapple held enough food to feed 6 people. While cooking, both ends of the skewers remained cool to the touch while hanging over the edges of the grill. When it was time to flip the food, I simply grabbed each end of the skewer, pulled it taught and rotated it. Unlike every other skewer I've ever used, ALL of the food rotated with the skewer. During cooking, only one strawberry fell off the skewer, which is much better than usual (for me anyway). To wrap up, I'd say that if you like the idea, but are worried about whether it will actually perform as advertised, DON'T. You won't be disappointed by these skewers.
