Taylor 1470 Digital Cooking Thermometer/Timer
* This one, which I still use daily and think of in terms of "better the Devil you know..."
* The similar-looking but less well-thought-out Oneida 31161 Digital Thermometer & Timer, which is annoyingly loud and also scoots backwards when you press Start/Stop.
* The Oregon Scientific AW131 Grill Right Wireless Talking Oven/Barbeque Thermometer, which is a horrible "talking" design with a stiff learning curve that is utterly unaided by the manual, but has ONE feature that makes it worth learning and makes me forgive all its sins: its probe can survive 572 F.
* The Maverick Wireless Cooking Thermometer, which works well, but I don't quite get the point of the "iPod interface"
So, to this one. First thing you need to know is: buy a spare probe, because they don't last very long. They can be damaged by heat greater than 350F. That is just too low there are many times when hotter ovens are necessary. When a probe goes bad, there is no indication until an expensive roast gets carbonized. This, of course, always seems to happen when guests are present. Spare probes are available at a decent price from taylorusa dot com. Come to think of it: get two.
A recent new use for me is the foolproof production of world-class steaks, as thick as they are wide, to any precise desired degree of doneness: pre-heat the (salted, peppered) steaks in a 275 F oven until internal temperature is 90-105 F (depending on desired doneness) and finish by browning in cast-iron skillet. An even more precise technique does it the other way round, browning first, but that needs a 450F oven, which also needs the Oregon Scientific thermometer.
Here's my original review.
---------------
This is the best of the corded remote thermometers. Take it as a given that it is fairly short-lived. Now, don't hold that against it -it has a hard job to do, it does it very well, and (what none of the other reviewers seem to realize) it does come with a lifetime guarantee. If you take care to not expose the probe to temperatures above 350 F, it should last.
My first one lasted four years, and I was completely at a loss when it broke. Once you've cooked with a remote thermometer, you will not willingly go back to "guess-n-estimate," or supposed "instant read" thermometers that actually take 15 seconds while the oven quickly cools down and your wrist-hairs start to singe and curl.
I used to be anxiously uncertain about making roast beef. Now, I bring it home, trim a little fat off, stick the probe in the center. Two minutes elapsed time, and I can kick back until it's time to make the pan gravy. Perfect (let me emphasize that) PERFECT every time.
The buttons are well-made; the display is bright and clear; Setting time and/or temperature is a snap; battery life is about 1 1/2 years when left on all the time. I covered mine in olive oil/flour/fish sauce/raw ground beef/balsamic vinegar/whatever and it still worked (hint: the buttons are not water-resistant, so turn it upside down and wipe with a soapy sponge, then rinse the same way).
You can calibrate your unit by sticking the probe in melting ice (for 32 F) and briskly-boiling water (for 212 F), but both of mine were spot-on, so you might skip this step.
Uses you might not think of: Putting the probe in a big pot of water you're boiling for pasta. You can relax, knowing you'll be buzzed when it's finally boiling.
Sticking the probe out of a closed window in the late Fall to warn you to harvest your last tomatoes.
Sticking the probe in the middle of a swordfish steak, setting it for 125-130 F, and knowing that you will get utterly PERFECT swordfish by the time it is served.
Sticking it in the middle of the largest meatball you are simmering in sauce -you will feel completely secure that they are safe to feed to your children.
When I'm cooking at a friend's house, I bring my big shop apron, my knives, my "shovel" (it's a pastry scraper, but I mostly use it as a shovel), and this thermometer.Even when directions are followed rigorously, the probes on these guys are prone to melting down. I've purchased one from all the major distributors, and they all work the same. Taylor or somebody needs to sell a 10-pak of probes, instead of me buying a whole new unit every 4 months... They do work great though. I use an older gas oven that has trouble maintaining proper cooking temperature. The secondary dial that I've installed inside can read as much as 50 degrees different from the digital dial on the oven. Because of this, I prefer to probe and track the cooking temp of the food instead so that I can provide a perfectly cooked product. I also use this for making tea, as 212 is too hot for good tea, and 185 to 195 is a better temperature.
Still, the probe does melt down as other have said. I typically get about 30 to 50 uses before I need to purchase another. The problem occurs mostly when the oven temp exceeds 350, as I lose most probes when baking breads. Still, I can't live without it, I just wish Taylor would start selling a package of probes for my dozen `timers' that I have sitting around the kitchen. It would be 5 stars if the probes didn't die.
Buy Taylor 1470 Digital Cooking Thermometer/Timer Now
I got mine 3 weeks ago, used it twice, all the features works, except the main purpose of measuring temperature. Now I plug the probe at ambient temp of 90F and it shows HI all the time (above 392F).If I put the prove in the freezer, It will show 180F.
I ended up with an expensive timer with a probe that does not work. Now I can't even return it, as I'm not in US. Shipping by mail will be more expensive then having the money back.
Read carefully the reviews before adding to cart.
Very disappointing

This digital device is the ultimate thing of beauty. As everyone knows, oven temperatures are imprecise so how do you know when your food (esp. meat) is done. The answer is use this product. The metal probe is designed to be inserted into a piece of meat with the ovenproof wire connecting it to the thermometer which must stay outside of the oven. The magnetized base allows the thermometer to be stuck right outside of the oven. When the meat reaches the target temperature, it will let out an alert. The end result is beautifully cooked meat to the desired level of "doneness." I recommend undercooking by about 5-10 degrees since there will be carryover cooking time (assuming you rest the meat). The device is amazingly easy to use. If you can program a digital watch, you can figure this gadget out. It also has a timer function in case you are working on two dishes at once.

The best way to cook. I have been using them for years. Notice I said "them". I have tried Taylor, Polder & Accurite. ALL are made in China. All fail in 6-9 months. After 6 hours of my valuable time one day, I got a hold of Tech Support at an importer. The problem is the probe. You can not wash it, kink it or expose it to temperatures greater than 390 F. (My Webber says to pre-heat grill to 550!) Plan on buying many replacements and a life of 6 months each. Not many Web merchants have the probe in their shopping cart.
Too bad no American company can do the technology right.

I saw these and thought to get a couple as a back up to a small grill I had for tailgating since I did not know if a few others of my group would show up.CONS
it is a little flimsy but works
the stand does not attach just sits on it
the charcol should be spread out more even
PROS
it lights fast
gets hot
great for some quick cooking or warming items in like sized foil or foil roasting pans
The bottom line is this should not be your main grilling item but it does work if you have items to help. I had a fire place grill to sit them on so I did not have to worry about the stand that came with them. I shook it up a little while flat to spread the charcoal. They lit fast and worked to heat up chilli and grill extra links and dogs while my main grill was in use. SUGGESTION: place it in another foil type roasting pan if you are cooking links. The ones I had were not perfectly flat so I had a couple of links kinda roll off on me. I would use again as a side cooker for other items and then there is no mess to clean after. I liked that part. It is good enough for some tailgating,a picnic, or to set on top of your home grill if you want something quick and dont feel like a big clean up after.

The portable grill is JUST AWESOME. We had a picnic the day we received the grill. It CANNOT be any easier. Open, put on the stand and light with fire. The fire stayed hot for over 2 hours, while we grilled burgers, sausage, hot dogs and fresh corn. In fact, we had to put water on the fire to extinguish. HIGHLY RECOMMEND for no-fuss small cookouts.
I am buying a supply of these gems to keep in the car, because you never know when you want to pull over and grill!

Hamilton Beach 31602 Raclette 8-Person Party Grill
In short, the unit functions perfectly. Its variable temperature control (a must for raclette cooking) does its job well. Clean up a frequent gripe among raclette grill reviewers is a breeze....assuming that you only use the top grill to cook normal raclette-type foods such as small potatoes, sausages or Canadian bacon, not frying eggs, and that you treat the non-stick surface properly.
Although the listing copy doesn't make this clear, the unit comes with both the rectangular pans and the plastic scrapers. And the cord length (another often-heard complaint) is quite adequate.
The only potential shortcoming is the way the item is shipped -in its retail box only, the way you would pick it up at a store. That means the only thing between your grill and the rough world of a UPS trip is a few pieces of egg-carton packing and a flimsy, non-corrugated box....a recipe for disaster. Fortunately, my unit arrived OK though the box was pretty beat up. Amazon should require its third party 'partners' to use shipping cartons, like Amazon itself always does. (On the positive side, my one experience with Amazon re a shipping-damaged item was very satisfactory.)We are very pleased with our HB Raclette Grill! We originally tried raclette cooking in France with friends and bought our own. We've used it for entertaining and daily dining, and everyone has a blast with it! All you have to do is prepare food items (potatoes, cheese, deli meats, veggies, eggs, etc) and each person cooks up their own combination. As the food cooks/heats you enjoy great conversation with up to eight friends, over the raclette and perhaps a glass of wine. Cleaning is simple given the removable parts and non-stick cooking surfaces.
The machine is quite handsome (more stylish than other comparables) with those crescent handles and nifty (baby) pans. The grill that rests on top is very useful and easily removable. The machine comes with the temperature dial on one side and the red indicator light, letting you know that the machine is plugged in (heating is fairly quick). The heat resistant plastic (baby) spatulas are surprisingly versatile. (Some other raclettes don't come with an indicator light or spatulas!)
If I had to note anything I didn't fully appreciate, it would be that the machine doesn't seem to have an off mode, other than pulling the plug. The only other thing to mention is concerning grill cooking. If the heat is up high and you leave fatty foods or oil on top, splatter can occur firing unfriendly projectiles/globules and making clean up a bit more work. This is true of any indoor grill though. Just be careful.
All in all, we love the raclette and use it happily and quite often! It is highly recommended.

The grill works great. Used it for a few parties and we enjoyed it. The small trays and scrappers wash in the dishwasher without issue. The only thing I don't like is one has to pull the plug to turn it off.Want Hamilton Beach 31602 Raclette 8-Person Party Grill Discount?
I love the adjustable heat control, and this is great for fun, social meals. However, my only complaint is that every time I wash it, it seems to lose more of the non-stick coating. I don't scrape it excessively or put it in the dishwasher, I just wash it by hand with a sponge. I'm disappointed that most of the coating is gone after having the grill for about a year...Monday, April 21, 2014
George Foreman 36" sq. Non-Stick Electric Grill
I cooked steak, lamb, pork, chicken, salmon, tuna, cod, haddock, bluefish, trout, and a bunch of stuff that just isn't coming immediately to mind. It was all great. The biggest danger is over-cooking because it's so fast and cooks from both sides at once.
When cooking for one and there is space behind a steak or pork chop, I put slices of veggies like bell pepper and onions back there to cook with the steak. Behind the steak is a steamy spot on the grill and these veggies cook to perfection in the same time as the steak. Sometimes I rub them with olive oil for a nice taste.
The tilted design is great to get rid of grease and the hot plates sear the surface to seal in juices and flavor. With fish I like to use a very light coating of Mayo which seems to help make pink and white fish even more detectibly moist and tasty. With steak and meats the grill works great with rubs and spices. I really like the Paul Prudome "magic" line of spices. Yum! Even cooking a whole trout is great, albeit I needed to slice it in two at the ribs so it all fit at once. About 6 minutes between the plates and done to yummy perfection.
If you freeze steaks, a 6 oz 3/4" thick steak frozen solid and dropped on the hot places will be done to medium in just about 10 minutes, in my experience steak cold out of the fridge of the same size/thickness is done to medium in about 5 to 6 minutes. The timing is just about second nature now.
The non-stick surface isn't perfect, though pretty good. Be careful with forks/knives and use a plastic spatula to remove fish as it has a greater tendency to stick than anything else.
Cleanup is oh so easy. While one must not put their little GF in the dishwasher or immerse it (I wish the plates were removable!) it's still pretty easy to clean.
First, just after the food comes off I give it a quick hot wipe with a paper towel to get the bulk off. Just takes a second to do this. After the meal I finish the clean-up by hanging the front of the GF over the sink and using a soapy wet sponge. I thoroughly wash the plates and clean the catch tray. Then I use the clean catch tray to rinse the plates of soap, then drain it and both air dry. Water all flows into the sink and it's really clean. It all takes a minute or two.
This is a great tool. If it wasn't so great why would I keep buying them? :-) I even keep a spare on the shelf in case my current 4 year old one fails. I love my GF and its saved so much of my time while giving me great food to enjoy.
Update May 2013:
I've moved to a new GF Champ (the current one was bought 4 years ago) and the cooking times seem to be a little longer than my old one. Just a little reminder that while all the GF Champ variations are virtually identical (except for the plastic shell) there are small individual differences in how hot they get and cooking times may need small adjustments between units. I find the same thing is true in Microwave ovens. A small adjustment.
I still love my GF Champ and have given just about one of every champ model to friends or family members.Does what its supposed to... Works great after a few months. Also looks very nice on the counter. Was surprised how versatile this machine is

Weber 41455 20 Pound Tank Adapter Hose for Use with Weber Q and Go-Anywhere Gas Grill
I've tried slowly turning on the tank valve waiting a bit before lighting the grill, but the flame is still too low. I'll have to wait til summer before I can use the 20# tank with adapter hose again.
EDIT: After trying the procedure below I'm up and cooking again with full force even with it being 35 degress outside.
BYPASS INSTRUCTIONS
GAS GO ANYWHERE, WEBER Q + BABY Q
Since 1995, all regulators on gas barbecues have a safety device which restricts the gas flow in the event of a gas leak. You can inadvertently activate the safety device without having a gas leak. Typically, this occurs if you open the LP tank valve too rapidly, or if the valve + regulator assembly is in a slightly open position when opening the LP tank valve.
Your must remember when you are grilling you should always do the tank valve first and then the valve + regulator assembly when you start grilling or stop grilling. Never turn off the valve + regulator assembly before the tank. Gas is trapped in the valve + regulator assembly and adapter hose and the next time you turn on the tank, that residual gas in the line will back up and trigger the safety device.
Also, when you start grilling, you should open the tank valve V-E-R-Y S-L-O-W-L-Y, about ¼ turn at a time until it is all the way open before you turn on your valve + regulator assembly to light the grill even is it takes 30 seconds to a full minute. If you've just had your tank refilled, it has a lot more pressure in it at first than after you use it for awhile. That may trigger the safety device sometimes, too. These conditions can be recurring. If it happens again, then you will need to go through the reset procedure again.
If you do activate the gas regulator safety device, the barbecue will only reach temperatures between 250 and 300 degrees, even with the valve + regulator assembly on the HIGH setting.
TO RESET THE GAS REGULATOR SAFETY DEVICE:
Open the barbecue lid.
1. Close the LP tank valve.
2. Turn valve + regulator assembly to the OFF position.
3. Wait at least 5 minutes if the barbecue had been lit
4. Disconnect the adapter hose from the LP tank.
5. Turn valve + regulator assembly to the HIGH position.
6. Wait at least 2 minutes, then turn valve + regulator assembly to the OFF position.
7. Re-connect the adapter hose to the LP tank.
RE-LIGHTING THE BARBECUE:
Open the barbecue lid.
1. SLOWLY open the LP tank valve 1/4 turns at a time all the way open.
2. With the lid open, turn valve + regulator assembly to the HIGH position.
3. Ignite the grill by pushing the crossover ignition button.
4. After the burner is lit, close the lid.
5. The barbecue should reach 500 to 550 degrees in 10-15 minutes.
WHEN YOU ARE DONE GRILLING:
Turn off the LP tank valve first
Turn valve + regulator assembly to the OFF position.
If you continue to have problems or questions, please refer to the "Support" section on our website at www.weberbbq.com and look under "gas grills FAQS" or "charcoal grills FAQS" or call us.I bought the Charbroil Model#4623 46" adapter hose from Home Depot for $17 (also at Lowe's @ same price). It is the same hose as Weber but much cheaper. I matched both hoses together and both were identical down to the tags and warnings, the only difference was the packaging and price. The hose works well with 20 lb LP tanks and last way longer than the 14.1oz tanks.
Buy Weber 41455 20 Pound Tank Adapter Hose for Use with Weber Q and Go-Anywhere Gas Grill Now
I'm very pleased that I purchased the 20 lbs tank adapter hose for my Weber Q grill. The Q is our primary grill. We've always used portable grills in this way, but we love the Q so well, we use it much more than other portables we've owned. Also, the Q takes the smaller 14.1 ounce propane tank normally used for torches rather than the 16 ounce camping tanks. It really didn't make practical and economic sense to keep using the small tanks on a grill with the Q's capacity. But still I purchased this item with some trepidation. I'd read AMAZON reviews reporting that squirrels will eat through the grease splattered hose. My property is in an Oak & Hickory grove, so I have squirrels in over abundance. These guys have been known to augment their diets with my garden plants, but gnawing greasy hose sounds much more like mouse & rat behavior. I took a chance. So far no trouble. I'm using a homebuilt grill table with a 2 X 3 granite top and a generic grilltofloor length vinyl grill cover. (The weber Q cover only encloses the top of the grill) These might be a factors. A little Capsaicin , (the element in peppers that makes them hot, fond in products like "Squirrel Away"), might help the folks with gnawing issues. The 4" hose is quite long enough to reach from the grill port, under the table to my tank with ease and installation is very simple. I bought the adapter and my very first 20 lbs propane tank the same day and I was grilling that evening. I do agree that it would only improve the adapter if the hose were enclosed in say, metal mesh. But that would undoubtedly increase the price. I think at the current price point the 20 pound hose adapter is a great addition that grants me more use and enjoyment of a great grill. I still think it was worth the risk of rodent interference to get this adapter compared to the cost of 14.1 ounce propane tanks over time. But I admit to hedging my bet, If the hose gets oily, I'm keeping a shaker of cayenne pepper handy to sprinkle on it just in case.....2011 Follow up to my earlier review:
After several years of good use, my adapter hose was finally taken out by rodents during winter storage. Fortunately, someone out there listened and in March of 2010, I was able to purchase a stainless steel adapter hose
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000THEZR8/ref=wms_ohs_product_T2
I used the stainless hose for a year have been very pleased with it. The hose fit the tank and grill ends fine and is a good length to reach from grill to tank. Just this month I replaced my Weber Q with a Weber genesis 320. (The Q still works great, but I wanted more BTUs.) The new grill has its own hose which is enclosed in a cabinet, so I'm not too worried about grease spills. I am however, hanging on to the stainless hose just in case the rodents get restless again. It looks like the hose I purchased is no longer available at the link above, but an Amazon search on "Freedom Grill FG-50HA Stainless Steel Propane Hose Adapter", brings up some other brands that might be worth checking out.Works great. Be sure to wait the prescribed time (~ 1 minute) after opening the valves otherwise the supply is reduced to pilot lite strength. I speak from experience. Duh.
Want Weber 41455 20 Pound Tank Adapter Hose for Use with Weber Q and Go-Anywhere Gas Grill Discount?
Excellent product, however, the directions are not clear as to proper hook up. Once the adapter is connected, you should turn on the propane tank and wait at least 5 minutes before igniting the grill. This step ensures that enough pressure builts in the regulator(the round thing on the side of the grill) and will produce a strong flame.Saturday, January 11, 2014
Grizzly Spit Rotisserie Spit Forks

Even as a small child I would balk at the different foods that were thrown on my plate in such a way as to mix up the flavors.Seems to me that to enjoy a meal to the fullest one has to appreciate the different flavors separately. The old adage that it all goes to the same place just didn't cut it for me never has never will. shish kabob's excluded. So as a result of my finickiness I set out to separate my rotisserie meats from rotisserie potatoes by purchasing another set of forks for the spit rod. As a side note grilled asparagus with a butter and fresh garlic basting will knock your socks off.Off topic tho fresh corn right out of the garden with home grown fresh lemon basil cooked in the husk is my other favorite summer treat. Anyway when I got my Grizzly barbecue forks I was really impressed with their sturdiness and construction. Now I will never mix up these wonderful flavors in my back yard barbecues. Elizabeth Karmel's 14- by 13-inch Bamboo Pizza Peel with Folding Handle
I received the peel and found the screw very easy to turn due to the heavy large black plastic head. The handle has two sturdy dowel pins attached that are quite easy to line up and insert into the corresponding holes on the board. This is a safety feature that prevents the peel from accidentally swiveling while in use.
The peel is beautiful and very easy to use. The directions state it can be used as a serving tray but I would be reluctant to cut anything while on the tray and damage the beautiful smooth surface.
Of course it will work well for sliding pizza on the grill as well as sliding no knead bread dough into the oven.
We are very happy with this peel and finds it easy to use.

Received peel and had to correct following items to permit use:1. Locating pins in handle had fallen out. One of the pins was too long and had to be cut. Glued back in place.
2. Press nut on peel that handle bolts to had fallen out. Applied glue and pressed back in place.
3. Grommet for hanging strap hole in handle had fallen out. Glued and pressed back in place.
4. Pivot point hole in handle was not drilled completely through. Re-drilled.
In addition, picture does not show the large black knob used to attach handle to peel.
After repair work, peel is useable and attractive to look at but folding handle function has created more problems than it's worth. I suspect before too many uses I will be bolting the handle permanently to the peel.
Want Elizabeth Karmel's 14- by 13-inch Bamboo Pizza Peel with Folding Handle Discount?
I ordered 2 of these because the sale price was what I was willing to pay. If you overlook the fact that the handle really does not actually swivel, it works fine. It might be because the two little dowels on mine are not equal sizes. One is twice as long as the other. The instruction states that you should be able to loosen the knob such that the handle will swivel, but the dowels don't actually release until the screw is completely free. Is this a big deal for me? Not really. It's not too hard to remove the handle and store it in 2 pieces. It would be more difficult to reattach it in the 'swivel' position as you have to line up the dowels, and do so blindly. I just leave it in one piece. If you are buying this thinking it will swivel easily, it will not. That said, it feels pretty sturdy, and it will do the job well.Sunday, December 15, 2013

AcuRite 00869 Wireless Grill Thermometer
My only disappointment is that the remote pager unit does not display the temperature. This is my own fault since on re-reading the description, it only says that the pager can also display a timer. Even there, the pager timer is independent of the one in the main unit, so you have to set both at the same time if you want to see how much time is left from the pager.I couldn't get any readings beyond 10 feet, there is no temperature reading on the remote. When the probe burnt out (my fault), I tossed the unit rather than throwing more money into a poorly designed item.

It barely beeps when the main unit reaches a preset temp IF you're not out of range, which mine is when it's 10 feet away. This is not the one you want.Read Best Reviews of AcuRite 00869 Wireless Grill Thermometer Here
I have had mine for over a year and it works great! I love it I use it with a traeger grill and use the magnet on the back to attach the digital readout on the side of the pellet hopper (that doesn't get so hot) then I can just look out my side window without even opening the door and see what the temperature is. It don't really use it for time because I barbeque to the temperature of the meat. If there is one that the remote shows the temperature I think that would be nice, but I am very happy with the accuracy of this one. My meat always turns out perfect. The screen could not be read unless viewed at an angle and the remote does not monitor temperature. It would only sound off if the meat timer went off or the temp reached a certain level (that you set).
