Norpro Cast Iron Pig Bacon Grill Press
We love our bacon nice and crisp, and this little press does the job great and seems to speed up cooking time (perhaps because the cast iron "holds in the heat" while the bacon fries?).
Bacon was crisp and delicious; the press prevents bacon curling and relieves you of the neverending task of flipping bacon over and over and over again when cooked conventionally.
This press is a great addition to my kitchen; only gave it 4 stars, simply because it isn't quite as heavy as I would like, although it still performs well.
Just make sure you season it before first use (directions in the box---just oil the press, oil a frying pan, then heat both together on VERY low heat for 20 minutes.
Allow to cool and wipe excess oil off press). But don't use it with nonstick pans! This litle pig has it all. Right size. Well constructed. Fun to own and does the job right.

I have a pig collection but this is great anyway. I use it for every piece of meat I fry. I do not use oil so want the meat to sear and this fits the bill.Read Best Reviews of Norpro Cast Iron Pig Bacon Grill Press Here
I bought this bacon press from Williams Sonoma and be warned--the screw holding the wooden handle on rusted out. The handle will not stay attached to the screw which makes the press pretty much useless. We followed the exact cleaning instructions to keep it from rusting, but it happened anyway. While this is a great looking product and worked well for a little while, it is now trash. This item really helps create crispy bacon that's super flat, which I love. I'm not sure for certain, but I could swear it's also cut down the cooking time, which is also a plus. The only downside is that it's a little difficult to store after usage. Since it's cast iron, it can't be, or shouldn't, be cleaned, but only wiped down. This leaves the item greasy, which is fine if you have a place to keep it that doesn't get other things greasy at the same time. I've taken to putting in a Tupperware, which I don't really like, but it works. Overall, I would definitely recommend this product! Oh, and it's a totally cute pig!Saturday, July 5, 2014

Cuisinart WMR-CA Round Classic Waffle Maker
1) An accurate thermostat--no surprises when you open the lid
2) A consistent heating surface--avoid hot spots or undercooked waffles
3) A variable timer--essential if you have more than one waffle color preference in the family
4) Smart design--it stores on its side, taking up a LOT less space in your cupboard
5) Easy to clean exterior--cleans up with a damp paper towel
6) Dependable non-stick finish--unlike cheap waffle makers, the nonstick finish on this model does not wear out
7) Cool-touch lid--never burn your hand on a waffle maker again
I am genuinely thrilled with my Cuisinart waffle maker and I believe it's an absolute bargain. If you're used to spending big bucks on store-bought waffles--or if you have a cheap, junky waffle maker at home--treat yourself to this nice little unit. It's a low-cost luxury. Plus, you'll have a fun time making waffles (and impressing your family and friends!). Bon appetit!Update: Daily use, keeps going and turns out excellent waffles.
I mentioned below that waffle batter can be stored in the fridge. Try leaving it out overnight. The batter turns slightly sour, and still makes great waffles, but with a sourdoughish flavor that is pure heaven with maple syrup. And you can make some and leave it next to the waffle iron the previous night so all you have to wait for in the morning is for this waffle maker to heat up.
Interesting that this product is getting polarized reviews. Either very good or terrible. Here's my experience and then comments others might find useful.
I made a batch of chocolate waffles to freeze (to reheat and serve with ice-cream). All 14 turned out perfect. Before that, I made 7 regular waffles that came out GBD Golden Brown and Delicious. All I did was follow the light and use settings from 3 to 4.
Going back and forth to get my preferred color was easy because 3 was still 3 after going to 4 (and a bit more). The initial and subsequent uses didn't cause variations in the color. Good design.
Wiped all of it clean with a wet kitchen napkin. Easy.
Miles ahead of my last waffle iron, which required a lot of guessing and waffle rejection.
DON'T open the lid until you see the ready light. Or bye bye waffles. They do not like to be disturbed until ready.
A good recipe is important. Don't use pancake mix, which is simply a combination of the dry ingredients formulated for pancakes and not waffles. Besides it's a rip-off, like selling $1 unglazed tile as a $20 pizza stone.
Here's my adaptation of a Good Eats recipe: 2 cups all purpose flour, tsp baking powder, half tsp baking soda, tsp salt, 3 tablespoons sugar. Whisk together thoroughly. Combine 1/2 qt whole buttermilk or pint full fat yogurt + pint milk and 2/3 stick melted butter and pour into dry stuff. Mix with rubber spatula for ten seconds (don't overmix, small lumps will be ok). Leave for about 5-10 min. Turn on waffle iron, spray plates with pam or similar spray. Drop two ice-cream scoop-sized blobs slightly behind the middle and let the lid down. Setting: 3-4. Remove when green light comes back on. Easy. Excess can be stored overnight in an airtight box in the fridge.
If I could wish for anything more, it would be for a ready light that was visible from the far end of my long kitchen. The light is designed to be in sight of a normal height person doing other stuff nearby. I have a long kitchen so the light is barely visible from my sink on the other side. Since then I've been listening for the "click" that flips the red light to the green.

Why would you want a waffler?I wanted to start making my own waffles after hearing about how subpar frozen waffles are in comparison to waffles made from scratch. Waffles made from scratch has a lot more versatility, quality, taste, and you can freeze them as well. Make a batch, freeze the extras, and just make more when you run out. I have to agree that these waffles are a lot better than frozen waffles and quality is of importance to me, so I'm sticking to this routine.
What kind of waffler to get?
There are many different kinds and here are some factors to consider:
1. Belgian vs Regular basically the same batter, yet will taste different when made in these two different styles. The Belgian is bigger and the batter rises more when cooked, resulting in a very light and fluffy waffle. The regular waffle is more dense. Which is better? That's personal preference, but I do like the Belgian more.
2. Shape
There are a lot of different shapes: Round, Square, Rectangular sticks, Mickey Mouse, Hearts, etc.... For regular waffles, Round is best because the heat coil in the waffler is able to spread the heat more evenly so all the edges gets cooked more evenly than with other shapes. This is not that big a deal, but it is of importance to consider.
3. One vs Multiple waffles.
For a waffler to make multiple waffles at once, it would take a lot of electricity and time. Considering those two factors, it's better to have a couple of single waffle makers rather than one waffer that makes several waffles. My sister has one that makes 2 square waffles and she loves that one, but beware of those that make more than 2 waffles at a time. I like a single waffler because this is a uni-tasker and so I don't want something so big and hard to store. I'll accept that I need it and want it, but there's no reason for it to take up more precious storage space than necessary.
After doing a lot of research, I bought the Cuisinart WMR-CA Round Classic Waffle Maker. A waffler is a very basic and simple item, I trusted the Cuisinart brand, and the price was right. I was disappointed by the performance though and replaced that one with this Villaware Waffler. I didn't like this waffler as much as the Villaware V2002 UNO Belgian Waffler -Round because:
1. I discovered that I liked the Belgian style better over the regular waffle.
2. Villaware had a LOT less spillage than the Cuisinart out of 9 waffles, only one had batter spilling over, and that's from me testing out what the proper amount of batter should be. I have full confidence that I can make waffles consistency now with minimal to no spill-over.
3. Villaware unit was heavier duty and seems of better quality. It's heavier, the lid is heavier as well this is a good thing in a waffler because as the batter cooks and expands, it's going to push the top open having a heavier lid prevents this from happening as much. Some other models/brands have a locking lid. The only bad thing from the lid opening up is that your waffer will not be cooked as evenly on top than the bottom. The Cuisinart's lid was also "wiggly" meaning, when you open it, you could wiggle the lid from side to side. The Villaware one was a lot more stable in this respect, therefore, feeling of higher quality.
Overall, this is a good, cheap, basic waffler. If you're not very particular and don't mind cleaning up a lot of spill-over, then this waffler would serve you well. There is no on/off switch, so once you plug it in, it starts preheating. When it's ready for batter, the green light will light up. I tend to do other things in the kitchen while waiting for the waffle to cook, so I can forget about the waffle. So a beep would be nice to notify me that it's ready, with this unit, you have to remember to check the lights to notify you.
The inside is non-stick, this is very nice. You can spray on some oil to help further prevent sticking. I don't think it's necessary to add any additional butter/oil, if you carefully pry an edge up, you can slide a spatula underneath and lift the whole waffle out pretty easily. The entire waffler is easy to clean. I just wipe out the whole thing with a paper towel. It's one solid unit, so you can't submerge it or put it in the dishwasher just a good wipedown is sufficient.

We have owned two of these. They make perfect waffles, as many of the reviews have said. The problem is that the top handle becomes loose. It is attached by scres that have their heads inside the top of the waffle maker. Once they become loose there is no way to re-tighten the handle. Eventually it just falls off. Our first one died within the warranty period. The second one lasted until just beyond the warranty period. It is a stupid design flaw on an otherwise wonderful product.Want Cuisinart WMR-CA Round Classic Waffle Maker Discount?
I started waffling with this iron the day I got it. It's very simple to use, and the "done-ness" adjuster is very handy since I like toastier waffles but my family tends to like lighter ones.I have no complaints about this iron, I haven't had any of the burning or sticking problems other people have mentioned because I read the manual and I always grease the iron a little bit with Pam or some margarine before I use it. I have yet to encounter a truly non-stick surface on any kitchen product, especially a high-temperature surface like a waffle iron, so I always err on the side of caution and whip out the PAM.
The one picky thing I'd recommend is putting a tinfoil lip over the control slider, as batter sometimes oozes over the edge and threatens to get into the groove that houses the lever.

Pizzacraft Porcelain Deep Dish Pizza Pan
Buy Pizzacraft Porcelain Deep Dish Pizza Pan Now
Nothing can be much better than an old-fashioned homemade pizza using the deep dish method. We just finished our 5th one and eagerly await the 6th one especially since they are so easy to fix using a relatively small 9.75" pan that works so well for the process. I am very careful NOT to use my trusted circular wheel to cut the pizza IN the pan. That, I do believe, would cause undesirable scratches on the surface and render the pan somewhat useless. The porcelain coating permits easy sliding out of the pan for dividing the pie into slices. While this is my first Pizzacraft pan I can see using more of these in the future especially should I ever decide to venture into the land of bigger pies. It was so nice, however, to retire several of our older and larger but relatively useless pans in favor of this new number one pizza pie cooker. Thanks a pan full!Read Best Reviews of Pizzacraft Porcelain Deep Dish Pizza Pan Here
This pan is very heavy and seems to be good quality. I used it to make a lasagna and it turned out good. The pan cleaned up okay. The rolled edges have some sharp places and were rough on my Scotch Brite sponge. I do worry about the porcelain coating chipping with more use.Saturday, February 22, 2014
Big Green Egg Temperature Gauge (non-digital) TPT Tel-tru
Buy Big Green Egg Temperature Gauge (non-digital) TPT Tel-tru Now
This is a good thermometer, but read the directions and calibrate it before you install it. I bought a Big Green Egg that had been used one time as a "demonstrator." I could never seem to really get the temperature "up" on it, so I figured it must be the thermometer, and I got this one to replace it. In the end, I'm thinking (like I did when I got this new thermometer) that the people who set-up my Big Green Egg simply installed it without calibrating it. READ THE DIRECTIONS. They're small, and they're on the little piece of paper that's inside the plastic case and covers the thermometer. It looks like it could be something, like the plastic case, to throw away as soon as you open it, so check-it-out. After reading the directions, calibrating and installing this new thermometer on my Big Green Egg, I went to the trash can and got my original thermometer. I'm keeping it as a back-up, thinking it was good all along, but had just never been calibrated. Like I said, until I happened to notice the directions that came with this new thermometer, I never would have thought you had calibrate it before installing it.Read Best Reviews of Big Green Egg Temperature Gauge (non-digital) TPT Tel-tru Here

I have used a grill pan your years, but this is the first one I had with a lid. The lid makes all the difference. Everything cooks quicker and more thoroughly now. Also, there's no smoking, and therefore my kitchen and air stays cleaner.I don't usually cook with non-stick cookware, except for making omelets.Non-stick does not usually make a nice crust on meats or reduce sauces properly. I will stick with my All Clad stainless and Le Creuset for everyday cooking, thank you.
HOWEVER, in the winter months when it is too cold to go outside and grill, this pan is the BEST commercial grade non-stick pan out there.
Fish and steaks cook up beautifully, searing the meats, leaving nice grill marks every time. It cooks up chicken breasts better than my Weber grill.
Easy cleanup and nice rubber ergonomic handle.
I have yet to use the heavy glass lid, but it's nice to know it's there!

As most others, I think this is a great pan and I cook a lot. But the reason I can't give it 5 stars is also stated by another reviewer. If you saute anything with gas heat at more than low, and who doesn't?, the sides of the pan scorch. The only negative is it does not come with a lid and this hurts its overall use and you cannot buy a lid for it. As Seen On TV 8153 Big Boss Grill 15-Piece, 6 in 1 Grill Set
I used it a few times and it grilled perfectly. However, after about 3 times when I plugged it in nothing happened. I cannot tell you how disappointed I was. I went to the computer to see if anyone else had this problem and lo and behold their were hundreds of customers with similar problems. It seems to me that if a company had recieved numerous complaints about a product they sold (The Big Boss Grill) they would look into what was causing the problems and either fix it or take it off the market. I would have sent it back and I still might, but the shipping charges cost almost as much as the grill. Since most people don't send it back precisely for that reason the company makes out. Amazon I have done a lot of business with you in the past and I have been extremely satisfied with everything I purchased. I know people sell things through your site and if something isn't right it is up to the company that is selling it. However, if I were you after reading all the negative comments about the big boss grill I would not accept the site that was selling that product. It is your name that makes people think everything you sell on your site will be A-Okey.

What was I thinking? This thing would be okay if you are cooking for 1 or 2 people. Any more and everyone would have to eat at separate times.I only use it to cook omlettes and waffles now. The grilled cheese has the crusty ends which my kids do not like. When I cooked chicken on it, I have to cut the breasts into tenders. It takes closer to 9 minutes for 1 chicken breast cut medium thickness. If you are cooking for four or more, someone is getting a cold piece of chicken.
Also, last night I cooked a breast in it, I noticed that all the juices had nowhere to go. So much of it went under the plate. I DO know that electricity and liquids don't mix.. I hope it isn't damaged now. So now when I cook chicken, I will take out the old frying pan again..
I haven't made a donut, hamburger, or a pannini yet. Donuts look real small though. I do like the way the omlettes come out, but it takes closer to 9 minutes, than 5 minutes as suggested. I feel french toast would probably work, but again, only 2 at a time. 5-6 minutes each.. Good Luck!
Also, I recieved a phone call telling me that since I was such a good customer , that I would be recieving $40 in free gas vouchers in the mail, along with a bunch of other discounts that I could use for a try out period. It would cost me $24, after the first month. If I want to cancel it, just call the number. I did not recieve this envelope, therefore cannot camcel. I called Big Boss Headquarters, and they told me that they have nothing to do with this promo. How dare them give my credit card number to someone else. Now I have to go to my bank and fix this mess.!!
Anyway, if you want to eat waffles or omlettes for one or 2 people, this is for you. I won't use this for chicken or grilled cheese ever again.
I wish I could get my money back.. Maybe I'll stop payment.

I live in a small apartment with a very small kitchen, and I have an even smaller amount of time to clean a grill. I've had contact grills before (the George Foreman line is so far still the best IMHO), but when you need to save both space and time this is a good buy. It's not great, but it does work once you figure out its quirks. The indicator lights are a great touch so I know when it's come up to heat. Also, the dishwasher-safe plates are a definite plus. Some things I've found:
-The heater does not have the wattage to deal with frozen hamburger patties. It will, however, work great on fresh ones.
-If you're a culinary nitpicker, the omelet plate won't make a true omelet. However, it does make a tasty breakfast "scramble."
-The grill will hold grease away from the meat, but you need to drain it between individual servings. This can be dangerous to say the least. (I use a set of nomex gloves...good luck finding those.)
-The griddle is good, but not great. It might make a good supplemental griddle for, say, when you have a lot of relatives over and you've got all burners going on the cook top.
For a general-purpose all-in-one appliance, this is a good design. However, it is not the best for all tasks. A good starter, say for the college or graduate student, but not for someone who wants a serious contact grill.

I bought this thinking it looked very versatile. Well maybe it is but in minature size. Silly me..I didn't look at dimensions. This unit is quite small. The Dounut pan would make dounuts the size or smaller that Dunkin Holes. I don't know what I was expecting but I'm not sure this is it. haven't used it yet as I'm not sure whether I should bother keeping it.
