Outset QP47, Plastic Grill Brush (short/9")
EDIT: 5/16/11
I just wanted to add that this unit has been working perfectly for the last few years. I wanted to point out that I use this with the small "Smokey Joe" Weber grill. I do not use this on a full size grill. I think you would want a brush with a longer handle if you were using a full-size grill otherwise you might burn yourself. For my small grill, this brush works just fine. It is comfortable, has great ergonomics, and is built very well.I had this brush for a couple weeks. I have a grill with a strange grant (not bars), and the bristles weren't quite long enough. Also, probably to my own fault, this product sat in a cup of water until it evaporated. At this time, the bristles fell out immediately and an orange rust (I think rust) remained on the brush. You're probably better off getting a brush at the grocery store.

This is a good little brush. my hand gets warm when using it, but not hot enough to burn. Brissles seem to be holding up just fine after a dozen uses.Read Best Reviews of Outset QP47, Plastic Grill Brush (short/9") Here
I've used this for over two years now and it's been the most durable grill brush I've ever had. It still looks good and works fine!Want Outset QP47, Plastic Grill Brush (short/9") Discount?
This is an inexpensive brush that does as advertised. Good quality manufacture, though obviously its plastic not wooden. I didn't think the short handle would be an issue actually it can be a bit uncomfortable on a very hot grill, but especially if I leave it next the grill while it's warming up so that the handle is hot already. So if I don;t do that it's fine.

Great brush with a nice handle and strong bristles. The brush I received did not come with a replacement brush head as promised.Want Kingsford KRU40 St. Louis Grill Brush Discount?
The bristles are indeed stainless steel, but the rest of the metal parts rusted within one month, so the whole thing now looks totally disgusting. Very disappointed.David Greenbaum. Clearwater, FL.

Camp Chef Wireless Thermometer
Buy Camp Chef Wireless Thermometer Now
I did not buy mine on Amazon... I purchased it at a grocery store for $17.I have seen people say it worked once, then stopped working. This was my experience too... But being an engineer, I want to fix things rather than give up. Turns out that there is a slight flaw in the design in that the unit requires fresh batteries in the hand-held unit after about 1 to 2 cooks. I use mine for monitoring the air temp inside my smoker, rather than inserting it into the meat.
Since I don't use it the exact way it was meant to be used, I don't use all of the features. I don't like the way it works 100%, but that is mostly because I am using it in a way other than what it was intended. I cook things like brisket, and I may have the smoker going for as long as 24 hours, so for me it is about keeping the smoker at a low temperature... And I'm not cooking till the meat is done, I'm cooking till the meat is ready to fall apart, which is more about a long an low cook than it is about the internal temperature of the meat (the meat temp counts too, but the cooking temp is important to keep controlled).
The beeping alarm is too high-pitched for me to hear, so my wife has to tell me when it is going off... But for the most part the purpose is so that I can keep an eye on the temperature, without running outside every half hour.
As for the "it worked once then nothing" problem, what I notice is that the hand-held unit needs fresh batteries to work... I mean really fresh. When it stops working, it can't pick up the transmitted signal. The batteries are still good, just not "good enough". It probably won't work on rechargable batteries, as rechargables run at a lower voltage. I checked the voltage drop of the batteries when it is running, and it didn't seem to be drawing too much current, seemed like it should be good for months. The problem is that as soon as the voltage of the batteries drop below the "brand-new" state even a little, the unit looses it's range. This kind of sucks, but once I understood the cost of using it is that I must use fresh batteries each time, I decided I could live with that... I spend $60 on meat, $20 on various other things like spices, veggies and charcoal... I can live with spending another dollar on batteries.
the current consumption is low enough that if you could figure out how to add another half-volt to the voltage of the battery, you could probably only change batteries every few months.
It has a flashlight built into the hand-held unit... Don't use it if you want your battery to last.
I can see this being a 2 star unit for most people...if they know it just needs batteries... One star for those that think it is dead when it really just needs new batteries. I bought this to replace a $40 unit I bought at the same store that worked fine, but I didn't like it at all (the remote displayed the cook timer, but not the temperature, only the base had the temp, the remote had an alarm and a timer... LAME). So I'm really happy with this unit despite the weakness of needing fresh batteries with each use, thus the 4 stars.
The base unit seems to not need fresh batteries constantly, but your experience may vary.

Bought this present for my father for Christmas. We cannot get it to work at all. Doesn't read the temperature. Pretty unsatisfying.Want Camp Chef Wireless Thermometer Discount?
I didn't buy Camp Chef LTRM Wireless Thermometer with Probe last fall because of some of the reviews I read here. Instead, I bought the maverick thermometerMaverick Remote Smoker Dual Probe Wireless Thermometer ET-73, which is a disaster. The maverick probes are unbelievably very poor quality. I had 6 fail in 2 months (and I was babying them because I had been warned of their poor quality shame on me). The Maverick was a total waste of money.I met the Camp Chef product manager at the national hardware show a few weeks ago. I told him about some of the issues I had seen written up. He told me they have made some modifications to improve the battery issue and more importantly, to change their probe design by giving it extra "armor" (much heavier mesh and insulation around the probe wires) to make the probes more durable. I talked him into giving my partner and me each one of the new models. I have used it about 8 times already and my partner has use his about 20 times (he is a true smoker fanatic) with zero issues, so it seems they have beaten most of the quality challenges mentioned by others.
The only minor issue I still note is that the alarm tone is at such a high pitch that I can't hear it (nor can my partner), but my wife and children can. I don't care, but it drives my kids crazy (not necessarily a bad thing...)
I will continue to monitor performance and I will post an update if I have issues.

Weber 1810001 Summit S-420 Natural Gas Grill, Stainless Steel
I live in an area that has a constant breeze that was always a problem for other grills. The wind would get into the grill between the base and the cover and mess with the flame and cool the food. This grill has an inner cover that connects to the base and blocks the wind. This makes for very even temperature.
I was told this grill is manufactured in China and I was a little nervious about the quality of it. As far as I can tell, it is very well made and all the stainless is very thick. I looked at a couple other stainless steel grills and there is a noticable difference. Even the lower line of Webers have thinner metal.
The grill comes preassembled except for the two side tables. Two screws each and the grill was pretty much done. The grates and flavor bars had to be put into place. I was preheating in no time.I've been using the grill for the last couple weeks and I must say I absolutely love how it cooks. It does a fantastic job. There are many pluses about this grill and I read many positive reviews before getting it, but I'm focus my attention on what I feel is a fairly hefty design flaw with this model. When it rains, the water channels down the back of the top cover (the part that doesn't move) and wraps around under neither and drips into the stainless steal grease tray, which then funnells the water into the alumimun grease tin. The water also appears to be all over the bottom shelf area after a good rain. I'm not sure if this is because it's overflowing out of the aluminum tin, or whether it's coming in somewhere else. The result is, if the BBQ is out in the rain, you'll have a very wet interior. The next problem that occurs because of the moisture is the electric starters don't always function as expected. I've had to start my BBQ with a lighter a couple times now. However, once it heats up (which it doesn't very quickly) the starters dry out and then function normally again (this is what the online help for the BBQ states to would happen). I'm also starting to see rust forming on the interior rivets. My guess is they weren't designed to have that much water around them, but it's concerning as I was hoping this grill would have no problems lasting many years.
I have called Weber support and told them about this issue they said I need to keep a cover on it and are sending me out one. I have to say the people on the support line were very friendly. I just wish they had a solution to the real problem, other than covering your grill. If I'd just bought this thing to look pretty, I wouldn't care, but I use it everyday for at least one meal and I live in the Pacific Northwest were BBQing in rain is a common practice. Waiting for the grill to cool down before putting the cover on is a pain and not something I always remember each night.
I've also looked at the Genesis series at Home Depot and noticed they have a lip on the back to help prevent the water from coming in. According to the guy at Home Depot this does help a fair bit and definitely more than the design on the Summit.
Buy Weber 1810001 Summit S-420 Natural Gas Grill, Stainless Steel Now
The grill was pretty easy to set up. Since my back yard is open and exposed, I will chain this beauty down...but there is no easy way to do that, I'll have to drill through the stainless steel.Reading reviews of other models, I knew that it was going to run hot. But caution! The book of recipes that comes with the grill will make you burn everything up. It does warn that they are extra hot before they get broken in (dirty) but that doesn't say it all. I very nearly ruined 3 meals before I started watching the meat instead of following their instructions to leave the lid down as much as possible.
Always adding olive oil to your meat will make things better. Having a grill that will heat to 500 degrees or more is great, it is easier to clean than my old one. You can bake a pizza in there.
I did not follow the advice from a review on a similar model, I've gone ahead and purchased the Webber cover. While the stainless steel is easy to maintain, the rain and snow leaves too much dirt on it, so I'll cover it in winter.

The Summit grills are excellent, but very expensive. Relative to the top-rated (Consumer Reports) E-series at less than half the cost, the S-420 is not a particularly good value (hence the 3 stars). However, if you are considering spending ~$1.5k on a grille, look closely at the Weber S-470.
For an additional ~20% in cost, the three additional burners add a *HUGE* amount of versatility:
1) Built-in smoke-box (with separate burner control) is extremely convenient, and works well.
With our old Weber, smoking was difficult to control and I never got good results. Now I smoke anything other than thin cuts. Ribs are amazing... :-) The smoke box does slightly reduce the available grill area, but the S-470 can still handle a large load. The dedicated smoker burner also acts as an excellent additional indirect heating source, even if you are not smoking.
2) Extra "searing" burner generates crazy amounts of heat in the middle section, enough to match any charcoal fire. This works extremely well for steaks.
3) Added infra-red burner makes browning on the rotisserie easy.
4) The combination of these added burners enables extremely rapid pre-heating. Our S-470 hits >700F in less than 10 minutes with all 7 burners active!
If you shop on-line carefully, you may find the S-470 at sale prices even closer to the S-420 than the 20% gap in list price. At the time we bought our S470, the street-price gap was less than 10%.
Want Weber 1810001 Summit S-420 Natural Gas Grill, Stainless Steel Discount?
This is my fourth Weber but my first Summit model. The previous Genesis models that I owned came with quite a bit of assembly required so I was surprised to see the Summit come off the truck pretty much all assembled. All I had to do as to follow the simple instructions for adding the left and right work surfaces/burner and a couple of other things and I was in business. It works like all Webers ... just plain excellent! I still miss the left and right side fold up work surfaces that disappeared in the redesign that happened a couple of years back. If I have one complaint it would be that if you opt for the side burner you really have only one work surface and that is on the left side. Being right handed it would have been better for me to have the work surface on the right side and the burner on the left, but I can live with it.
Mine is the natural gas model and I have found little difference in cooking times from the propane models I enjoyed earlier.
Webers are not cheap, and you can buy a whole lot more grill (read hardware) for the money, but if you spend some time inspecting the other models and doing some comparisons you can quickly see why the Weber is a better product.

Emeril by All-Clad PRO-CLAD Tri-Ply Stainless Steel Dishwasher Safe Fry Pans/Saute Pans
I own the full 10 piece emerilware pro-clad set. This is a larger pan that the set does not include. The pan itself is flawless in construction. The handle is shaped right to divert heat so you do not need a hotpad holder while cooking on the stove. The full tri-ply construction seamlessly melds an aluminum core between two layers of stainless steel for optimal heat spread. it is priced very reasonable, considering this pan is made by all-clad, who sells an idenically constructed pan for far more money. You're essentially getting all-clad quality for a bargain price.
There's a lot of caveats to owning a stainless steel pan over a non-stick. There are also a lot of advantages. cooking on stainless steel is different than non-stick. You won't make eggs in stainless steel. anyone who tries A) doesn't own a nonstick pan, or B) is a stainless steel fan who can't admit the limitations of the pan. Stainless steel is designed to stick! that's why we make meats and other savory dishes in stainless steel. after its cooked, we have all those wonderful bits on the bottom! we deglaze with wine or broth, and can reduce the liquid and make a sauce or gravy out of it. You can't do that with nonstick. For making Eggs, flatbreads, corn and four tortillas, pancakes, and especially creppes, I still will use my old trusty 10" nonstick skillet. While I may be able to cook some of those items in stainless steel, I'd have to use a large amount of grease to prevent sticking. I can just pam spray my nonstick and go for less calories and less headaches.
Some people also complain stainless steel is harder to clean. high temperature paints a rainbow over your pan, and things that stick can be hard to unstick without using abrasives that will scratch the pans. It's easy if you know two great products.
1) distilled white vinegar. This will take off all rainbow effects and waterspots, and disifects as well! I always keep a spraybottle of the stuff in the kitchen for sanitizing surfaces and pans.
2) for restoring the shine to your stainless steel, and getting hard to get out stains, try barkeeper's friend: cookware version. This version can be bought from the barkeeper's friend website (just do a google, I don't think I'm permitted to link outside amazon in reviews even if amazon doesn't carry the product). The cookware version is formulated to not scratch your pans and makes them look new. leading stainless steel makers like allclad and calpheon all reccomend this product to clean. Infact, I just received a 4pack of the 12oz bottles in the mail today.
Overall, I think you can't go wrong buying any emerilware pro-clad pan. Its quality stainless steel at a great price.I needed an 8" for omelets, I love this. 8" good for 1 egg ok for 2 egg Omelet, 10" good for 2 egg ok for 3 egg Omelet. New cooking info at bottom.
I copied this from the FAQ page on All-Clad website, the best cookware in the world;
20. What are the differences between All-Clad and Emerilware?
All-Clad bonded cookware is made in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. All-Clad offers the best in professional cookware and utensils, for an ultimate cooking experience. Emerilware is the result of the successful collaboration between All-Clad and chef Emeril Lagasse, and offers high-quality colorful and authentic cookware. Emerilware is made in China.
New info, alot simpiler then what I had before.
Extra info: for Stainless Steel cooking which is very non-stick if done right. Never cook with higher temp. than 1/2 throttle, I usually dont need that much heat. Dry heat pan long enough. When you drop water on it, and it sizzles the pans not ready yet, the pores are opening and closing. When the water just rolls around evaporating slowly the pan is ready to cook on, get used to the warm up time. For eggs add a little oil, I prefer Coconut oil because its very healthy. For meat and Bacon, oil is your choice but not nessecary, it will stick at first so dont try to move it. After a few minutes it will release, if a little brown is left stuck to pan the heat was too high, but no problem scrape and fresh oil before the eggs go in.
Clean up is easy, a scrubbing sponge works nicely. Discoloration, and burnt resin usually on the bottom flame side, I use "Bar Keepers Freind, Cookware" about once a week

I have been using this pan almost a year now. Many reports say the food sticks. It will if not done right. If you preheat the pan to proper temperature before putting in the food, stainless steal pans do not stick. For info on how to preheat stainless pans go here:I use it mostly for scrambled eggs and it works great.
Amazon did not show the link I reference. But you can probably do a web search on how to preheat a stainless steel pan and find it.I own the 10-piece Pro-Clad set, and the 12-inch pan. It took me a couple of weeks to learn how to use these pans. At first, everything was sticking, and cleanup was a hassle. But, I didn't give up, and read up on how to properly cook with stainless steel pans. When the directions tell you to cook at a lower temperature, pay attention! that turns out to be the key properly managing the temperature. It turned out that even though I *thought* I was cooking at a lower temp, I really needed to drop the temp even more; about 20-30% lower than I was using for my older anodized aluminum non-stick cookware. Once I figured that out, I've had no problems. I cook fried eggs, scrambled eggs and even omelettes in these pans, using nothing more than some cook spray. When used correctly, these pans are very easy to clean up, too. Most of the time, a wash cloth or dish sponge is all I need. Sometimes, I need to break out the Bar Keepers Friend Cookware Cleaner. After a few months, these pans still shine. Other positives, they heat evenly, and react quickly to changes in heat (I have a gas stove).Emerilware is great stuff. Some of the best cookware you can get without going All-clad. Emerilware has two lines Pro-clad and Stainless. Pro-clad being a little higher on the quality scale. The picture for this item is the Pro-clad. You will receive the Stainless. Still a good deal, would have been a great deal for the pro-clad. A little deceptive.

I am using this baster to take samples from my home brew fermenting vessels in order to check alcohol content. It does a good job at that. One thing that may turn some people off though, is that the bulb has a very strong rubber smell, even after washing. It may go away as time marches on, but I thought I'd mention it.It comes apart easily for cleaning, and I doubt it will ever break.I actually needed an inexpensive baster to remove waste from my betta fish's small aquarium since the aquarium is too small to install a filter and pump. I would buy this again if I needed a baster for the kitchen.
