Cuisinart CGG-180T Petit Gourmet Portable Tabletop Gas Grill

Cuisinart CGG-180T Petit Gourmet Portable Tabletop Gas GrillI purchased my Petite Gourmet Portable Cuisinart grill in January. I am an avid barbenator and I needed something inexpensive (and what I had intended to be short term) after my larger gas grill fell apart. I liked the size and portability of the Cuisinart. I was thrilled once I put the thing to use. I find it cooks whatever I throw on there evenly and has that barbeque flavor. It heats up so quickly, that I have to have my sides prepared prior to even starting the unit. When I am at home, I have it hooked up to one of the larger propane cylinders from my old barbeque. But where this thing shines, is how small and compact it can become. I fold the legs in and take it wherever I want. I take along a couple of camping sized propane cylinders in the truck and barbeque where ever I want. I have made lunch for the guys at work, fed the family skiing, and had a couple of awesome tailgate parties thanks to my new grill. I am so happy with it's performance that I don't think I will even buy a new full size barbeque. I don't think it's performance would ever measure up to this little guy.Cuisinart CGG-180 Petit Gourmet Portable Gas Grill with VersaStand

I am an avid camper and a condo dweller, so I don't have a lot of room to store things and have limited patio space. This portable grill is perfect with its easy storage size and flexibility to be great for car camping or patio grilling.

Set-up = simple. I'm an engineer, so I read all directions, and it still only took me about 8 minutes.

I went with the Cuisinart because the other grills of this size felt cheap. This one feels solid. The grill grate is thick and durable. The legs click into place, and the temp control knob doesn't feel like it's about to fall off. The gas tank is also placed well, such that you aren't afraid of it falling off akwardly and breaking off the gas valve.

The trial run consisted with wings grilled on a 15 degree (f) day. The grill came through with BTUs to spare. The next run, on a more mild but still cool day, was Italian sausages and asparagus. Delicious (and nutritious)! The grill, despite its diminutive size had more than enough power to handle both the meat and the veggies. It allowed even cooking of the veggies when placed on the edges and showed great grill marks on the sausages.

When finished, clean up was easy (a quick wipe down of the grill grate), let it cool, folded it up, and tucked it into the corner.

Another great product from Cuisinart. I highly recommend for any bbq/grilling enthusiast with limited storage and a discerning taste!

My husband loves to grill in the summer, but we're always waiting for the charcoal to heat up, so I got him this small portable gas grill as a surprise. We could not be happier with it's performance! Easy set up right out of the box, quick heating to high temps, and easy clean up, we've already grilled on it a bunch since we got it because it's so convenient to use. It's a perfect size for just the two of us, but we've been able to grill plenty on itsteaks to perfection, sausage patties in a snap and even shrimp kabobsenough food for us to have left-overs. I love the fact that it can be taken anywhere, and we're planning to bring it camping once the weather gets warmer. Light to carry and easy to clean, we've totally been converted from charcoal grilling with this little grill! My husband says it's so easy to grill on it he wants to cook outside all the time with it, and I don't mind that one bit. I think we'll even take it with us to the beach when we visit his brotherheck I love that we can take it with us anywhere. Very glad I made the decision to get this portable grill!

I am a big reviewer before I buy items. This product had a lot of rave reviews and one that was not good that stuck out. I knew I was taking a chance. I have been very pleased, and feel the positive reviews have all been correct.

I bought the CGG-180 model because of all the "glowing" reviews. Wrong. I purchased in March and now it has failed after less than one grilling season. The heat output has steadily dropped since the initial purchase(initially it was great but it has dropped to the point it couldn't sear anymore), the plastic lid lock melted and fell off and finally, the gas control valve will not rotate so the grill no longer works! And if you look at many of the awesome reviews, this is the only review this person has ever done!

Santa Fe QM2R 900-Watt Quesadilla Maker

Santa Fe QM2R 900-Watt Quesadilla MakerThis Quesadilla maker lets you get creative with your quesadillas. Of course you can make quesadillas on the stove-top in a pan like some reviewers suggested...but this makes it easy, no-mess and you don't have to stand at the stove top to flip, so you can bring it to the table and have a tabletop party.

What I love is that I can make quesadillas with very little oil in this maker as opposed to stove top. The quesadillas come out crispy and with distinct segments that I can quickly cut with a pizza cutter. I love serving the wedges as snacks at cocktail parties, especially as they come out crispy and sealed and can be served as a finger food.

There is also no end to fillings. My favorites 1) spinach/sundried tomatoes/cheese or 2)mushrooms/red peppers/grilled chicken/provolone cheese or 3)mashed potatoes seasoned with red onions/green chilli/cilantro/a dash of any good spice mix/a light sprinkling of cheese 4) roasted corn/red pepper/black beans/cheese 5) broccoli/chicken/cheese 6) spicy turkey mince cooked Indian "keema" style with green peas and tomatoesas you can see the list of yummy ingredients goes on and on.

I just prep the surfaces with a quick spray of olive/canola oil and don't use much cheese. So much better than the calorie rich quesadillas you get in restaurants. You can even use any tasty leftovers/casseroles as stuffing for the quesadillas. My family and friends simply love the quesadilla parties where I lay out many ingredients and they can mix and match and make their own quesadillas.

Some tips: If you use cheese try using the natural cheese which creates less mess than the melting processed variety. Also buy the bigger tortillas so that the whole surface is covered and the edges are neatly sealed. If you must use a small tortilla, put less filling right in the center and go very easy on the cheese, or it will seep out and create a mess. If you do get a mess, it is very easy to clean it off with a damp paper towel right after you take out your quesadilla.

Napoleon Dynamite's grandma would be proud to own one of these! Works great. One little tip before you head to the grocery store... you must use the LARGE "burrito size" tortillas with this. If you try to use smaller tortillas like "taco size" or "fajita size," they won't extend out to the part of the grilling surface that seals the edges and your melting cheese will flow out the sides. The instructions say you must use a 10" diameter torilla. That's usually sold as "burrito size." I agree with Diane that an on/off switch would have been a nice feature, but it still works wonderfully.

I love this product! Try it with the flavored tortilla wraps they have out now, I had a great spinach tortilla quesadilla with green chilis, awesome, after that I had to buy one for myself and I don't regret it. It preheats within five minutes, flop a full-size burrito tortilla or wrap on there, load it with fillings, throw another one on close the lid, let it heat and there you are: lunch in under fifteen minutes, it's that easy. Since I am very lazy about any sort of cooking, this has made my lunches so much more fulfilling. Another note, so far, none of the fillings I've used have stuck to the nonstick surface and it is easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth or sponge. Just don't overfill the tortillas or they won't seal at the edges and the fillings will leak out.

I have a cheese quesadilla fanatic for a husband and never could get his approval when it came to making his favorite at home. Tried the oven and broiler method and just ended up with either a soggy mess or a burnt beyond edible trash can item. Well, I happened to stumble upon this handy little item. Wow, has this made my life easier. Better yet, He can now make his own. It makes the most wonderful quesadillas ever. Just a few minutes in the machine and you have the perfect snack. They are sealed and have the perfect consistancy. And don't know why but stay warmer longer than others. I figure this is due to the sealing of the tortilla. I also love the separations in the cooker. It makes it so easy to serve and gives it a real professional look. I have also tried a few of the recipes that come along with the machine and they were just great. Give this maker a try. It really will make your life easier, whether it's for your quesadilla fanatic or for the kids afterschool snacks. Also, Stands on end so it's easy to store.

Cuisinart CMW-200 1-1/5-Cubic-Foot Convection Microwave Oven with Grill

Cuisinart CMW-200 1-1/5-Cubic-Foot Convection Microwave Oven with GrillI live in a small downtown unit in San Francisco, so anything that takes up space has to earn it's living. This unit is now the only "oven" I use, and it's wonderful. I see many complain about how long it takes to "heat up," but that's a misunderstanding of using convection heat. Just put whatever you want to cook in the oven--cakes, breads, lasagna, etc.--and it will cook as the oven heats. Because of the convection, there are no "hot spots" and nothing will burn. The only adjustment is the cooking time, but that can be gauged with a little practice. Easy to clean, makes wonderful toast, pies, fresh breads and roast cuts of meat.... I don't know what I'd do without this. The microwave is very flexible and easy to use with many different choices on the control panel.

I really looked forward to using this microwave. Unfortunately, it wasn't until I reached page 6 of the instruction booklet that I found I could not use it due to space requirements. The oven needs at least 3 inches free space at sides and back, as well as 12 inches free space above it. These requirements should be listed along with the size of the oven in the technical info to avoid a customer having to send the item back. My hanging wall cupboards were too for me to use the oven, so it had to go back.

Great idea I went out and got frozen french fries.

Tried no preheat convection and after 15 minutes they weren't done and cooked another 5 minutes.

Another batch I went with preheat and the temp at 425 as suggested and put the fries in the oven at the start of the preheat cycle. By the time it hit 425 the fries were done. I never did set the time. You are not allowed to set the time before the temp preheat is reached. At that rate if they are not quite done then you add more time through what they call kitchen time.

there's heat exhausting out the back that I wish would stay in the oven heating it up faster. However I don't know how convection ovens heat themselves.

Tried the idea of turning on the grill for 2 minutes then going to convection. It did not seem to speed things up any.

I am not unhappy. I've gotten three appliances off my counter and put the Cuisinart on top of the stove. Heat is an issue in the southwest so I have never used my gas pilot stove.

The microwave works exactly as I expected.

The grill has three settings. 100% grilling, 30% micro plus 70% grill, and 55% micro plus 45% grill. I haven't enjoyed steak at home for years so this I am really looking forward to. Fishsticks I'm going to try 30/70.

Roasting and baking have a fast setting which combines micro and convection, you can go straight convection too.

I would buy it again because the price is right, it microwaves great and grills. I never was an oven baker so few times I may preheat convection will be very seldom.

Right now I'm going to look for a rack utensil that I can use in both oven and microwave.

I'm sure after a learning curve that I will be preheat convection cooking and adding minutes after the oven acquires the set temp to finish my cooking.

Everything is possible.

We bought this microwave oven because it also has a convection oven. The oven takes a VERY long time to heat up.

Example:

350 degrees takes 35 minutes

425 degrees took over an hour

In contrast my regular electric (full size) oven takes 8 minutes to reach 425

Our old Panasonic microwave/convection oven took 15 minutes to reach 425

This machine was supposed to be a time saver, but we hardly ever use the convection setting as it takes too long to warm up. We find we now have an overpriced microwave oven. We could have got a much larger microwave (without convection) for the price we paid for this.

My advice steer well clear of this machine unless you don't need the convection oven in which case you are better off getting a cheaper model.

I wish I had read the other reviews before I bought this machine.

The only good point is you can use the glass turntable on convection mode our old Panasonic required you swap out a metal turntable whenever you wanted to convection cook, which was a real pain having to store the other turntable. However, you are unlikely to use the convection mode unless you remember to heat the oven an hour before you actually use it. I presume all this heating time is wasteful too, so using the full size oven for much less warmup time may work out better value...

We use this about every day, and it's done exactly what we want it to. I do tend to stick to only two or three settings, however. Standard microwave works as expected. There are some one touch buttons to cook popcorn, potato, fresh veg, frozen veg (and though I say one touch, each button will set to a particular amount (1C, 2, whatever) and then the microwave will operate for a set time based on what you set, not based on any kind of food sensing (as far as we can tell). So, for instance, if I just put in two cups of frozen veg, I'd have to press the frozen veg button two times, then press start, and it will microwave for 5 minutes. I might have to add time after the microwave is done. Also, if I decided that I wanted to add 30 seconds using the quick button, I can't while it's in this kind of auto program mode...so it's actually easier to press the 5 button once, and the microwave will quick start for 5 minutes, with the ability to add time 30 seconds at a time in the middle of cooking.

I also use the convection feature quite frequently, for a variety of things I want more crispy than a microwave will do it. It helps to use the included wire rack to put the plate closer to the cooking element, for quicker cooking. There's a combo convection/microwave feature that works well too, but usually I just use the convection feature (with the food in the microwave while it's heating) to heat the microwave up to the maximum temp (I think it's 450), and then it only takes a minute or two of microwaving to finish up any extra heating.

I haven't tried baking cookies or cakes (and there is a cake button), but from the way "grilled" cheese or frozen corn dogs or cheese sticks have cooked for me, I think you could easily use this for that kind of baking.

We do have a good oven, but the microwave is a lot faster and easier to use. If you want to use the convection bit, definitely put the food in while the oven is pre-heating. It may take some trial and error to get your food exactly the way you want it, but there's no point (so far as I can tell) waiting for the oven to be heated first, and it might just take longer than even the standard oven would if you waited.

Charcoal Companion Non-Stick Large Grilling Grid / 16-inch by 12-inch

Charcoal Companion Non-Stick Large Grilling Grid / 16-inch by 12-inchI've been looking for a good grid to use on my grill to cook vegetables. I was hoping this might be the one, but it was not. The non-stick surface is nice and definitely aided in preventing the veggies from sticking. The problem was that the non-stick coating started peeling off after the first use! Also this product has flat sides so small veggies tend to roll right off and into the fire. I ended up returning the product as it appeared to be defective.

Sharp AF-S125RX 12,000 BTU Window Air Conditioner

Sharp AF-S125RX 12,000 BTU Window Air ConditionerThe cooling ability of this product is very good. Installation was pretty easy. A couple of things that need improvement it is a bit noisy; the front grill (the one that directs air) is "too open" allows dust/litter inside. Also, there is an opening on the top of the air-conditioner's body (the part that remains on the outside) my old unit only had the openings on the sides and for that reason the inside of the air-conditioner remained cleaner. Also, the openings that are located on the sides are not protected my old air-conditioner had "owning"-like metal protections on each opening on the sides of the unit this also prevented the insides of the air-conditioner from water and street litter.

I have the Costco version of this AC. It is cooling a top (4th) floor, ca. 300-350sf apartment in Boston. The apartment faces North and West and gets a lot of sun. This unit evaporates most of its condensate very few drips reach the ground an older 5K BTU unit dripped almost continuously. It kept up fine with the hottest day we're likely to get in Boston (100F, 55% RH), running continuously during the hottest part of the day at a 68F thermostat setting, translating to 72-74F throughout the apartment, at 40-45% RH. It's worked great for the two months I've had it. Two possible downsides: 1) The filter doesn't catch everything I have a down comforter that sheds, and I find down in the fins, behind the filter. 2) Unlike many ACs, it doesn't have a dehumidification mode, which could be useful in Spring/Fall. For $250 it's a deal, and I would purchase it again.

this air conditioner unit is fantastic, it is cooling our 1100 sq ft home in energy save mode, it makes the entire house cold, it uses 1110 watts, and 10.2Amps we have no reason to keep throwing money at our rooftop central unit, did I say we got it for 249 a great deal.

Only had the unit for one day. Installation was easy but the window mounting accordion sidings are kind of flimsy. Also there is a design flaw in that the bottom of the unit has a grooved portion protruding right where the unit is suppose to sit in the window. This causes it not to be completely flush with the bottom of the window sill by maybe 1/4 inch at most. But this opening was enough for me to feel air from the outside rushing in and I'm sure its enough to allow bugs and spiders to crawl inside. I'll probably close it off with some all purpose silicon or something. Beside that the air blows nice and cold and for $249 at Costco its a good price comparatively.

Kamado Joe KJFS Fire Starters

Kamado Joe KJFS Fire StartersI used to make my own fire starters, this is better, depending on the amount of charcoal, just need one or two starters and poof, charcoal starts to ignite.

They burn fine if they are completely exposed to air. But as soon as you place them near the charcoal you are hoping to burn they go out.

We have a wood burning stove in our living room and these are wonderful for getting it started. I only use a half of one and it works every time. Really easy to light and burns about 12-15 minutes. We use them in the Kamado Joe "Egg" bar-b-que too during the warm months. They seem a little expensive, but if you've ever struggled with cheapo fire starters, you'll know right away that these are worth every cent just for lack of frustration. Really dependable and easy.

Taylor Classic Line Grill Guide Thermometer, Measures to 700-Degree

Taylor Classic Line Grill Guide Thermometer, Measures to 700-DegreeI would give this grill thermometer no stars if I could. I didn't purchase

it from Amazon because I found the identical one for several dollars less

at Williams-Sonoma. We have a gas grill and the first time my husband

used it he set it on the grill rack NOT directly over the flames but off

to the side. By the time he was done grilling steaks, the clear dial cover

had darkened so much and the interior dial markings which were red had

faded to a dull gray and it was impossible to read. It's a real piece of crap

and I'm surprised because Taylor thermometers are usually of good quality.

For the price, it wasn't worth sending it back and we tossed it in the

garbage can. I notice that Williams-Sonoma is no longer carrying this

item online as they must have received a lot of complaints on it.

Save your money and skip this hunk o' junk.

There are a LOT of thermometers I could have purchased that are a lot less expensive but I chose to spend over $15 for this one because the seller advertised the thermometer as "magnetic". In their product description, they state, "Magnetic back holds thermometer in place". When I got the thermometer and stuck it to the side of my grill, it promptly fell to the floor. I tested it on my stainless steel refrigerator and a few other places same results. I had it shipped next day because I wanted to use it for an important function and I ended up very disappointed. My smoker doesn't have a pre-drilled hole for a thermometer and I didn't want to drill one myself for fear of not insulating it well so the heat doesn't escape. I was really hoping this thermometer was going to work for me. I haven't used it yet so I hope it will at least gauge the temperature right. I hope this seller will take out the verbiage about it being magnetic because it's misleading and deceptive.

The Sharper Image 8217 Super Wave Oven Halogen, Infrared & Convection Tech 1300watt 16 Quart

The Sharper Image 8217 Super Wave Oven Halogen, Infrared & Convection Tech 1300watt 16 QuartLike any tool or appliance, you will need to "learn" how to use it correctly. The week that I bought this, I cooked:

* a leg of lamb;

* a ham;

* a whole roasting hen;

* chicken wings, thighs, and drumsticks;

* pork spare ribs;

* Texas style ribs;

* bacon;

* asparagus;

* tomatoes.

Most of the time, the portions are too small to justify firing up the oven/range or to hop outside and clean then get the charcoal grill going. So, if I need to bake, broil, "grill", or roast, I use our new Super Wave Oven. I like this appliance and use it more than I do our oven and the small convection toaster oven.

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT:

* does not burn what it is I am cooking;

* does not fill my house with the smell of burning grease;

* cooks very quickly and evenly;

* no burnt-on grease (carbonized grease);

* easy to use;

* almost a "set-it-and-forget-it" cooking appliance;

* takes up less counter space than my toaster oven.

WHAT I THINK OTHERS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT IT BEFORE BUYING:

___ The glass is HEAVY so care needs to be taken so that it doesn't slip from your hands during cleaning. It isn't impossibly manageable as some have asserted. Like everything else in your kitchen just be careful when you're handling it while it's wet. I rinse it with hot water and then wipe it immediately. The hot water warms the glass and will cause any water remaining after I've wiped it to evaporate quickly. This reduces the chance of it slipping from my hands.

___ Don't worry about grease on the cooking top--just wipe it with a warm, wet cloth. The remaining grease won't hurt it. Think about it, how do you clean your electric deep fryer?

___ Buy a pair of tongs along with this if your kitchen doesn't already have them. The tongs will allow you to work with your dish without fear of burning yourself when you're reaching into the glass bowl to move things around during cooking. Think about, how do you keep yourself from being burned when you're checking on your turkey or removing your dishes from a traditional oven?

___ You'll need a safe place on which to set down the hot cover/heating element while you work with the dish you're cooking. When the range top is not available because I'm cooking something else, I set the Super Wave Oven cover/top on either a wooden cutting board or an "air" cookie sheet.

WHAT I'VE FOUND OUT ABOUT COOKING WITH THIS APPLIANCE:

___ You may need to vary the temperature during the cooking depending on the dish. For example: I started the ham at a lower temperature and when it is near the temperature that I want, I increase the temperature of the oven.

___ I still use oil when "air" frying. The oil helps to fry the dish but doesn't get hot enough to burn.

___ I need to turn the bacon when I'm cooking it. But the house does not smell like bacon grease when I'm done!

___ Like everything else in the kitchen--if not life itself--preparation is the key ingredient!

WHAT I AM NERVOUS ABOUT:

___ The halogen, heating element. I am worried about the "filament" breaking from a slight bump or shake to the cover. I'm hoping that it was manufactured to a sturdy standard (like "super tough" duty or something like that).

___ I hope the plastic base is malleable enough to withstand a drop from the counter top. There are no rubberized grips or stubs that keep it from sliding around the counter.

I loved this oven for the one month that I had it before the fan stopped working. The bad news is that when I contacted the company they said that I had to send the oven back at my own expense. This appliance is not light. When I questioned why I should have to invest any more in their defective product, they said that they didn't offer free return shipping to Amazon customers...only to customers who purchased directly from them. Hey Amazon...sure you want to carry this product?

Buy The Sharper Image 8217 Super Wave Oven Halogen, Infrared & Convection Tech 1300watt 16 Quart Now

We've never had a convection oven in our kitchen, and I looked forward to trying this hybrid convection/infrared cooking unit. Overall, the negative aspects of this device outweigh its positives.

Some things to consider:

First: sheer size. I did the math, and at 15" tall (12" if you remove the metal extender ring) and 12" in diameter, you'll need to find a cool cubic foot of storage space when it's not in use. If your kitchen is like mine, and you already have a rice cooker, a slow cooker, a food processor and a countertop mixer competing for cabinet and counter space: good luck. I realize that the volume allows it to accommodate substantially sized contents. Just be aware that you'll have to find a place to keep it.

Second: weight. Approximately 17 pounds (advertised shipping weight is 18 pounds). Wherever you decide to store it, you'll be hefting it.

Third: lots of opportunities to burn yourself. See all that glass in the product picture? It all gets hot (as does the 3" metal extender ring). While it may be intuitive that these get hot, you'll be working in close proximity to them while turning items over or removing them from the cooking container.

Fourth: Clean-up. The main cooking bowl will take up most of a kitchen sink during clean-up. The heating and fan element, along with the power cord and power supply, are integrated into the glass lid. Obviously this is a "do not immerse in water" item. Cleaning up after the spatters resulting from cooking takes some thought.

One of the attractive features of this appliance is the opportunity to cook meats from frozen. Great idea, and seems like a time saver. Here's a reality check for one such scenario: cooking a 6.7 lb frozen chicken.

-the giblet bag. It's frozen inside the body cavity. I tried both running water and a brief stint in the microwave to get is sufficiently thawed for removal...no success. Neither was it extractable at the halfway cooking point (when you turn the chicken over). So I left it in the chicken.

-the cooking instructions for a whole frozen chicken call for it to be turned halfway through cooking. The included tongs for lifting the cooking rack out of the container simply can't accommodate the size of a chicken this large. So turning becomes an adventure with opportunities to both burn yourself...and send your half-baked chicken sliding across the counter..and maybe onto the floor.

Also of note in the included cooking instructions was a surprising difference in cooking temperatures for "whole chicken, 4 lb" and "whole turkey, 6 lb". The instructions indicated the chicken should be cooked at 460 degrees (F),the turkey at 350 (F). As they are both poultry, I was surprised by this, and had no confidence that either was correct.

Bottom line:consider carefully the wisdom of the "whole frozen chicken" recipe selection!

A brief discussion about cooking times and energy savings:

The description of this item indicates "up to 3 times faster" than a conventional oven. Pay attention to the "up to 3 times", and plan on about 2 times faster as a rule of thumb. This is a 1300 watt (110 v) appliance, so it'll use about the same energy as a high powered microwave or hair dryer. I'll assume this is still less than a 220 volt conventional oven (and leave that bottom line to the electricians). It will still use significant electricity when operating.

So, if you have a place to store it, and if your kitchen and cooking are such that you often need to prepare multiple entrees in the oven, and IF you select the correct recipes (stuffed peppers, baked potatoes, air-fried french fries or cuts of meat that can be easily turned), this might be a good choice for you. If not, this may be one of those appliances that finds a distant storage place...and then remains there until your next garage sale or moving day.

I left my original review below. Nevertheless it is irrelevant given that this product ceased to work in less than ten days. Great while it lasted. Used PRECISELY as directed. I did notice that the wash cycle was probably splashing water into places that it should not.

In point of fact, when a product ceases to work after such a short period of time, it deserves zero stars.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Quality product and well priced. It does what it is intended to do as it is intended to do it. I would buy it again. I would recommend it to a friend with the following caveats:

1. This device is not going to turn you into Julia Child or Bobby Flay. If your cooking sucks it will continue to suck. In fact, it might get suckier.

2. There is a learning curve. I made spectacular baked ziti. I also had a misadventure with buttermilk corn bread that approximated an early experiment from "The Fly" when matter was first transported between two telepods. The final result was a mix of carbon, concrete and primordial ooze.

3. The device is awkward. You need to figure out what to do with the hot top while you are inspecting, turning or removing cooked food. Moreover, reaching down and into the bowl to add or remove stuff is not what most people are accustomed to.

Being adventurous and expecting some disasters is the best way to achieve some masterpieces. You need a good pair of oven mitts. An instant read thermometer is a very good idea.

One way to get accustomed to this thing is to lower recipe temperatures by 50 degrees and then cook as directed. Food on the top rack is going to broil and brown accordingly or burn if you are inept. The best result for most dishes is achieved by placing the food directly on the rack but the glass bowl is easy to clean.

It is nice having something that doesn't smell, smoke or heat up my small condo. Convection cooking not only speeds things up but distributes flavors. Put some garlic and herbs inside a chicken and the flavors will infuse the legs. Convection also produces consistently even results. Halogen browns things very nicely. Unmentioned is that setting about a third between "Off" and "Thaw" is perfect for proofing yeast or rising dough.

Conclusion: This has the potential to turn out a wide variety of very good food. Leave it out and plugged in and you will enjoy it every day. Put it in a cupboard and it will likely stay there.

I was so excited to have received the Super Wave oven as a Christmas gift.

THE GOOD:

No preheating necessary. Great for quick lunches.

Roasted veggies came out great.

Frozen convenience foods (pizza rolls, egg rolls, quesadillas) came out as desired.

The whole chicken that I roasted was moist and flavorful. It cooked in about 40 minutes.

THE BAD:

Deceptively advertises that food retains moisture. NOT true of all foods, even when using the scanty selection of recipes included with the oven.

Difficult and cumbersome to clean.

Stopped working after 123 days...and I had to pay $25 to send it back to 400 Returns Road, Wallingford, CT (if a company has a street named after it "Returns Road", that should be a clue to steer clear).

THE WORST:

The customer service number included in the box redirected me to two different telephone numbers before I could reach a human...and quite possibly the rudest human on the east coast. After discussing at length why it was necessary that I return the ENTIRE unit when only the electronic part was defective, she relented but gave me a bogus return zip code. The "error" was caught by my friendly local postal clerk. On investigation through Google, it seems that this is a tactic that this company uses to deter you from sending back their defective products.

That was only yesterday that I contacted the company, and today I received TWO solicitation calls for other products through this company. NO THANK YOU. Hopefully, I will get my replacement mailed to me without incident and it will work forever and ever. Yeah, I know...wishful thinking.

UPDATE OCTOBER 21, 2012: The replacement that they sent to me worked for five months. I called the company to tell them that this was the SECOND defective unit and was forwarded to a supervisor. After a fruitless day of waiting for a return phone call, I called the company again. As expected, they said "Send it back for a replacement". No thank you. I'll keep my $25 in shipping. It is amazing that this defective product is still being sold. What a shame, since the concept is terrific and I did enjoy the results of the oven while it worked. Bottom line: The Sharper Image is in financial trouble for a reason. Keep your money until they figure out that quality is important for success.
