Meathead's Temperature Magnet

I saw this temperature chart advertised at my favorite BBQ, grilling, outdoor cooking website, amazingribs.com. I have learned a great deal from Meathead. I tell everyone who has benefited from what I have learned where to go. So when I saw this magnet, I bought a few. I also bought many other items Meathead has recommended. The best are my GrillGrates from . If you grill meat on either gas or charcoal, you must have these. Fat fueled flames are history. My son no longer uses any condiments on his burgers due to the infused flavors from vaporized juices. The best sear lines ever! I could go on and on, but this review was supposed to be about the temp guide. The temp guide is righteous. The other stuff I talked about is better....

The Magnet was everything we hoped it would be and it is so nice having it as a quick reference.

The shipping for the magnet was quite excessive for the envelope and regular mail stamp it was received in.

As helpful as this looked to be, two major issues with it make it much less useful. The poor decisions made in these areas significantly detract from whatever utility this provides, as such it gets 1 star.

The magnet is shipped with a bar code label stuck to it. Removing the label leaves is a gummy messnot what I want on my fridge.

Cleaning up the gummy mess with soap and water even just a little bit inevitably gets some water on the label.

Any water at all on the labelwhich seems likely to happen with a product in the kitchen and near the grillcauses it to peel off of the magnet backing.

I am thrilled with Meathead's temperature magnet from GrillGrate. It's much more convenient than looking up temperatures in a book, and is easily read from anywhere in the kitchen if it's on the front of the refrigerator. There are a few temperatures I know by heart as I use them often (beef, salmon, etc.) but this magnet is ideal for quick reference when cooking something I am less accustomed to. The magnet is of seemingly high quality, and I have had no issues with mine, though make sure you grasp that this is a large magnet (about 8" x 5.5") and will take up a hefty piece of real estate on your refrigerator door. I particularly liked the photographic correlation between the temperatures and different degrees of doneness on the right side of the magnet.

This is an inexpensive and practical solution to a common kitchen problem: I use this in conjunction with my Thermapen thermometer to get dinner served at exactly the right (and safe) temperature.

Prior to owning the combination of this temperature magnet and a ThermoWorks thermometer, you couldn't cut a peice of chicken in our house without a knife and a chisel. So we got a thermometer before Thanksgiving this year, just to realize that while we could now cook things to the appropriate temperature we need to know what the right temperature is. Hence this fantastic magnet's purchase.

Broan Model 659 Heater/Fan/Light, 50 CFM 2.5 Sones, White Grille

This is virtually the identical unit for a 25+ year old unit I replaced. Bearings were going in the old one and since it wasn't cleaned regularly was pretty crudded up. Hence it was increasingly inefficient and noisy. I replaced as part an attic insulation project the new unit is IC rated and worked with my existing 15 Amp circuit somewhat rare for a vent/light/heater combo. Instructions were clear. At 50 CFM the vent is appropriate for a small bath. Reasonably quiet (of course we're comparing it to the old one that sounded like a model plane taking off). Heater will knock back some chill but isn't a real powerhouse nor is it directional like in more expensive models. Light will accept up to 100 watt bulb but we found 75 watt more than adequate. Grille and light diffuser are attractive and seem to promote better airflow than the old. Internal components (light, vent fan, and heater) are easily removable for annual cleaning.

If you need some extra light and a fan (who doesn't!) in your bathroom, the Broan 659 is a good choice. Sure, it's not whisper quiet but 2.5 sones is a perfect compromise. It's just the right amount of noise for, uh, some privacy while you're on the throne, but not enough to wake up the person sleeping in the adjacent wing of your castle. The heater takes away a bit of morning chill but it's not going to dry you off if you've forgotten to buy towels or anything. But don't worry. With the amount you'll save purchasing this fan you'll be able to afford one of those really big plush towels. At 50 CFM this model is good for smaller bathrooms, but it is on the wide side. If your bath is tiny, a smaller size(and less cfm)might suffice. I take quite hot showers and the mirrors have not fogged while this fan is on.

I checked out a lot of reviews on heater/fan combos for my bathroom. I finally chose this one because of the features and good price. I've had it for about 2 months and the fan and heater work great. I wasn't sure what to expect with the noise level, but I find it to be very very quiet. When my husband turned on the fan for the first time, I couldn't even detect the noise. I thought he was messing with me. Then I listened carefully and could hear the white noise sound. The heater is a bit louder than the fan, but still very quiet.

Regarding the light feature, we already had lighting in our bathroom so we decided to put a small 7 watt nightlight bulb in the fixture. It works great for late night bathroom runs. No need to blind yourself with a bright light. The nightlight does the trick!

One suggestion if you are installing one of these in your bathroom, buy a timer switch for the fan function. We bought one with 10, 20, 30 minute options so I can hit the timer button and the fan will run for that amount of time, keeping the moisture down, and I don't have to try to remember to turn it off. I highly recommend considering this. I've read that it's good to have your bathroom fan run for 20+ minutes following a shower...so having the timer allows you to have it run for that amount of time and you don't have to worry about remembering to come back to the bathroom to turn it off.

Overall, we really like this fixture. The fan and heater do the job well. Also, we love the quietness and the option to use it as a nightlight.

I initially selected this model because: 1) It had a heating feature to resolve the cold air on wet body issue particularly uncomfortable in winter. 2) It can run on a 15amp circuit and that's what I already had running to the master bath.

Alas, I found, upon reading other articles I found, this unit requires a dedicated circuit. So, there went the idea of sharing a line already run. I then contacted my favorite licensed electrician and he and his partner came out and in a day ran a dedicated line from the lower level through the 12 foot living room wall, into the attic and over to the area above the master bath where this was to be installed. I was fortunate they were able to fish the line up without drilling holes into the drywall.

As others have indicated, the position of the vent to this unit dictated how it had to be installed between the rafters so, it ended up blowing the heated air against the narrower sides of the bath whereas, lengthwise would have been my preference. Having said that, it is important to note that it does an admirable job of heating our bath, which measures 650 cubic feet (13'X5'X8'). I feel since others have complained that it was not doing well to heat their baths, I should mention that it does very well for the space I have and any such device should be matched according to model recommendations.

Overall, I am very pleased with this combo fan/heater/light and would have rated it 5 stars if it could have been installed lengthwise to maximize the efficiency of the unit by allowing it to blow the heated air directly toward the shower. Just turn the heater on a few minutes before you shower, if you encounter the same install results to give it time to warm the room air and you are good to go.

The unit looks nice and white on the ceiling; however, we have had the electrician back once as it is very noisy when on exhaust. He has adjusted the "pipe" but thinks he may have to cut it to reduce the vibrations. We replaced an earlier version Broan with this unit but it was not an easy installation, had to replace the entire unit, not just the lower level parts. The heater portion is wonderful and it is much brighter than the older version.

I don't pamper my cheap gas grill or the very few accessories I have for it. They survive or they don't and when they don't, they get replaced. I came to this point of view after several rehabs of a cheap gas grill over several years (new grilling surfaces, new burners, new grease drain cups and hangers, power washing the flaking enamel off the inside of the lid, using a wire brush to scrape this and that, etc. etc., over and over and over). I was determined to get my money's worth out of that thing! Then when it was time to do it all yet again, I started adding up the money and realized that it was cheaper to junk the old grill and just get a new one. About the time I came to this realization, the big box home stores started offering free grill assembly (or even better, pre-assembled grills in stock that you can just pick up and take home). Haven't looked back since.

That's a long way of getting around to saying that if you're expecting this very inexpensive skillet to last for decades, your expectations may be, er, unrealistic. If I get two years out of this guy I'll be ecstatic. If I get one year out of it I'll be more than satisfied. This is a great product to have for any number of food items that you might want to grill and I would never be without one, just don't imagine that you're buying something intended to last more than a season or two or maybe three at the outside. It's not. Relax and enjoy!

Nostalgia Electrics SM-500 All League Sliders Electric Mini Burger Maker

Even with a $1 price tag, this grill would be overpriced.

I received one as a Christmas gift and have used it once. That was enough for me!

First and foremost, the burgers are just too small. Think of them as more like burger crumbs.

But then you get to the clean up part...aargh! What a headache! With the tiny little holes and all the other little crevices, and it winds up taking hours to clean.

If I'm using a grill, I want quick and easy with minimal clean up.

The slider grill isn't it.

I bought this for Christmas. My super market doesn't stock Slider Buns until summer so I didn't use it till last month (June). I read the directions completely before use and coated both the top and bottom cooking surfaces with vegetable oil. Every "Slider" stuck to the top. (I used the meat measuring device that was provided). This thing is impossible to clean. If it had removeable cooking plates, it would be much easier to clean. I thought I did a very good job of cleaning it in June, but the first batch I cooked on it (the second time I used it), every burger stuck to the top plate. I won't even attempt to clean it this time, it's going straight to the Trash Can, uncleaned. If it was free I wouldn't want another one. (If it were sealed electrically, I'd take it outside and hit it with my 3000 PSI Pressure Washer. That might get it clean!)

If you have someone you don't like, buy them one as a "Gift". This is more "Made in China" JUNK.

This machine does it's job and cooks little burgers in a matter of minutes. I very much love little burgers; you could almost say it's a passion of mine. The closest White Castle is a couple hours away though, so I was rather excited to receive this as a Christmas gift.

DIFFICULT TO CLEAN. The surface is non-stick, and even using the vegetable oil (or in my case, PAM spray) on the plates beforehand like the directions say, alot of black gunk builds up. You're supposed to wait for the machine to cool before cleaning; which makes the stuff hard and stuck on even more than it already is. Since the plates are not removable, and with all the grooves to clean between, you are left scrubbing and scraping for awhile with a damp cloth, which severely limits the convenience of this item, and you're likely not gonna want to take it out except for occasions to show friends and family the little burgers.

Also, the forming scoop/spatuala could use re-working. The scoop tool doesen't really work so well for measuring the meat as I ended up with burgers much too big that I ended up having to cook for a few extra minutes. You're better off forming the balls of meat by hand and trying to make them about the same size as they are in the picture on the box. And with the tool being two-in-one (scoop on one side, spatula on other) you're going to end up handeling the side that the raw meat touched when using the spatula function (if you're dearthly afraid of raw meat, this could be a severe detriment for you).

In the end though, it's hard to hate a machine that makes little burgers. If you love little burgers (like myself), you'll find something to like with this machine. With a few adjustments, this could be more of a useful item and less of a novelty one.

I love sliders -at a bar or the addictive White Castle! I bought this sight unseen as gifts, and got one for myself too! My experience was great -and it was a real hit as "just because" gifts. I am surprized this has not been super promoted as an infomercial or television shopping product. ( Maybe they are test marketing it? Maybe I missed it?) In some ways it reminds me of my 1st George Foreman grill -this unit exceeds expectations,and is perfect!

Whole House Fan Shutter - 30" - Interior Use - White

We bought this product to replace a 30 year old fan cover. It fits perfectly, although we had to build out the opening; the old fan cover was a surface mount style.

The only concern is that the pins, attaching the shutters to the pivot points, are plastic. It works perfectly, but we hope that the plastic endures.

This junk shutter came with my Home Depot whole house fan. It was a short-lived product. The louvers flutter constantly while the fan is on, even though the louvers are connected with arms to make them open and close together. The louvers rattle and make considerable noise at times and eventually the cheap plastic pins the louvers rotate on start breaking. You have to be careful that the louvers don't get sucked up into the fan as the pins break off.

I actually replaced all the plastic pins with brass pins, which I thought would make the thing work forever. It did last a couple more seasons, but the louvers continue to rattle and vibrate, and eventually even the brass pins gave up.

After messing with it for four or five seasons, I am junking the thing and will replace it with a system of my own design unless I can find something better on the market, which I have not so far.

I have been disappointed with other cooking torches that I have purchased. They simply did not provide a flame of the proper intensity for cooking and serveral were not easy to control. I saw a chef using an Iwatani Gas Torch on a televised cooking show and I figured that if a chef uses it, that it would probably work of me. The Iwatani Gas Torch exceeded my expectations. I use the Iwatani Gas Torch often. It is especially useful finishing the surface of meat cooked sous vide or on my BBQ. I especially like being able to start and stop the Iwatani Gas Torch at will. This saves on fuel and if you turn it off, you can easily re-start it if needed. The Iwatani Gas Torch is, in my opinion, a professional grade product and like many professional grade products, it needs to be used with caution. The flame end will be hot even after a short use, so be sure to place the torch somewhere where the torch can cool to a safe temperature. The fuel canisters are available low cost in some cooking stores and the fuel canisters are available in most resturant supply stores. Because of the nature cost of shipping fuel canisters (which increases the cost), purchasing fuel canisters by mail order may not be your best option, unless you order in quantity.

I bought this set for my husband as a Christmas present. The utensils seem to be well made. Unfortunately, when he opened the case, one of the closures snapped right off. We could see that the area where it had drilled to accommodate the closure had been drilled twice. We decided to just keep it since he wanted to use the utensils right away, but for the price, the case should be better made. He didn't want to take the time to return it.

Gave this to my husband for football tailgating. We'll have to wait until the fall to see how it holds up, but he loved it and the tools seem high quality. We haven't had any problem with the case.

Proctor Silex 26000 Belgian Waffle Maker, White

It was the cheapest one I had ever seen, under $18.00, and we are just two people so it was big enough. It looks more expensive than it is. The basic recipe makes 4 portions of two waffles each, with ease and fast. They do not stick, they are nicely crunchy on the outside and fully cooked inside. We love it. Clean up is easy too. Don't overfill. One of the best impulse buys I ever made. Because I never had been a waffler before. YUM!! Get one! Get two! It also makes grilled sandwiches but I have not tried that yet.

The "Proctor Silex 26000 Belgian Waffle Maker" is awesome! I've made regular waffles, oat bran waffles, apple pie flavored waffles, next will be banana... My regular waffles (even flavored) come out golden brown and crispy (gluten free), the oat bran ones are more dense but still good! This waffle maker has the larger deep squares of a traditional Belgain Waffle only it's square not round This waffle iron is easy to use and extremely easy to clean too!

i got this for free, but it's still a great appliance to have! it's easy to use and clean. just follow the recipes the comes with the waffle maker, and you will have a nice-tasting waffles in the morning.

This thing is very solidly built. I was pretty shocked at the quality considering how much I paid to have it shipped to my door. You see plastic turners at Target for $12+ and I got this at a price considerably lower. The metal is solid and thick. I don't see it bending for anything. The wood is real. Works great on my cast iron skillet, which is what I got it for. It has a beveled edge so I can scrape off whatever crud with it easily. It will work great for the grill as well. If you are looking for a solid turner that will probably last decades, give this a go.

I know it reads as a "hamburger turner", but with the beveled edge, I use it for removing cookies from the cookie sheets. My 1st one lasted about 5 years until I used it for a screw driver (my bad), and it didn't have a smooth edge after that. The cookies come off the pan without scratching the pans, or squishing the cookies. I really do recommend this turner.

Boska Holland Toastabags, Set of 3

These are enticing the way you toss in bread with cheese, and a few embellishments all so effortlessly. The pocket keeps in warmth from the bread to evenly heat what ever you want for a sandwich. This provides you with getting a grilled consistency and the option for adding variation to the cheese and flavoring. I think the great part is keeping the toaster clean, and also getting the full serving out just like the time before.

These "Toastabags" actually work very well for making grilled sandwiches in the toaster and have the added benefit of being washable and reusable, but there are durability issues. My wife picked these up on sale at a kitchen specialty store to try out since we eat a lot of sandwiches.

These bags are made of a nonstick material that easily holds two slices of bread and the sandwich ingredients of choice. Once assembled, we apply spray butter to the outside of the bread and insert into the bag. The first problem we encountered was fitting the bag into our old standard toaster, but even overstuffed they fit just fine in our shop kitchen's toaster that can also fit bagel halves. While these are advertised to last for up to 50 uses, we had our first one rip after just four sandwiches. Our second one is still going strong after six uses. Perhaps the first one to fail was a fluke, but it was disappointing.

The results are much better than expected, at least for grilled cheese (with or without ham) and Rubens. The outside of the bread gets nicely toasted and the insides are wonderfully "melty" hot.

Other than my concerns about the durability of these, I am very impressed with how well these work!

I was out of town last weekend for a wedding and finally drove back into town Sunday evening. Groceries were scarce in the house. Odds and ends and maybe 2/3 of any recipe, but I did have some bread and some tasty Havarti. I got the Havarti from EmmiRoth in the Boska and Culture Magazine giveaway and I've been eying it since it arrived. Tonight we feast on grilled cheese!

Really convenient way to make a grilled cheese without the clean-up. You can even add other ingredients in-between the bread and cheese (I put apple slices, Yum!) and the bag holds everything together while melting the cheese and toasting the bread evenly. I use a toaster oven and it keeps the cheese from making a mess dripping everywhere. The best thing about this product was how I could slide the bread and cheese into the toastabag, then slide the bag into a plastic sandwich bag which I put in my lunchbox, and just pop the toastabag into the toaster at work and have an ooey-gooey grilled cheese sandwich in a matter of minutes! I do kinda wish they came in different sizes or shapes, as some of the breads I eat are too cumbersome for the toastabags.

It worked just great, but when I washed it, the fabric tore along the seam. One use. The sandwich came out perfectly, but the product description indicated that it could be used repeatedly.

I can't sew it because the thread wouldn't withstand the heat of the toaster. Shame, because it is such a good concept.

When I first got this product, I tried it out on a few things and wasn't impressed. It worked all right, but no better than products which cost less. I was about to write a three star review okay, but not worth the price when a tenant moved out of the rental house we own.

He had lived there four years and was a three-pack a day smoker. You should have seen the place. The nicotine stains didn't show so badly on the wood-paneled walls (though you could sure smell it), but the windows had so many little brown globules, you could hardly see through them. I tried the standard cleaners, homemade and store-bought, and while some worked better than others, it was clear I was in for a lot of work (or a big cleaning bill). As a last resort, I grabbed the Krud Kutter and gave it a try.

One squirt on the windows and little brown rivulets were pouring down. All I had to do was wipe them off. It worked well on other surfaces, too. So well, in fact, that I gave it another try at my house, and found it was enough better than the cheaper products that it was worth the slight difference in price. Now I keep one bottle in the kitchen and another in my bathroom.

I've never found anything that would remove the red dirt/iron stain from siding before finding this product. It gets the stain off everything I've tried it on. It does a great job, even gets the stain off my shoes. It also removes hair spray from the bathroom vanity and cleans the shower to a sparkling finish--just spray, leave for a minute or two, and rinse off with a wet cloth. Lots of other products say they get rid of soap scum easily, but I've tried many of them and they don't work very well, if at all. I've tried many products on the hair spray, too, and could only remove it with lots of scrubbing. With this product, it wipes right off. This is great stuff.

I thought my husband was gonna die when a full can of wood varnish exploded right next to our recently restored classic Firebird. Arrrgh sticky, messy, stubborn splatters EVERYWHERE all over the paint and bumper! This stuff is seriously the best tough-job cleaner I've ever seen. From gross old wood-floor glue to skanky baseboard gunk to soap scum to dried-on house paint to nuclear waste (okay, maybe a bit of speculation on this last one), I think we haven't found a project yet that this cleaner can't handle with ease. I'll never be without several bottles of this stuff within ready reach I can't recommend it highly enough. Get your hands on this stuff... you'll be amazed too!

Reviewers often baffle the reader of cleaning product reviews with statements like "greatest product ever made" and "removed 3 foot deep 100 year old dried elephant dung without any scrubbing" while, at the opposite end of the spectrum, we find "had to scrub for six hours to get a fingerprint off the door handle." Some of these people have fallen for the already mentioned hyperbole and truly expect easy and fast even though they haven't cleaned their oven for several years. Others are impressed by anything with any cleaning capability whatsoever. Keeping this in mind, I'll try to give you an idea of this product's effectiveness on specific kinds and degrees of crud. Here goes:

Dried latex paint on a wooden floor: softened it enough in ten minutes to peel off the paint that had fallen in little, raised drops. The paint that had been accidentally spread thinly over the top of the wood floor was scrubbed off with a gentle scouring pad, but took a little of the finish off the wood as well.

Greasy stovetop: Cleaned up easily, but not any better than other, similar cleaners (including some from the dollar store).

Baked on oven grease: Did nothing at all, whether wiped off immediately or left to soak in for a half hour. Scrubbing didn't increase the effectiveness, though I did try.

Greasy painted woodwork: You've all had the sensation of wiping over the surface of grease rather than actually removing it, which is what happened here. I tried leaving it on to soak for 15 minutes, but it did no better. I got the best results by putting very hot water and dish detergent into a spray bottle, shaking it up, and spraying it on while wiping immediately afterwards. I reheated the bottle periodically in the microwave to keep it hot, and this did a great job (not to mention being very cheap).

Food stains: Tried this on a lower part of kitchen cabinets where I'd dropped a dish and splashed the surface. I didn't notice it until the following day, so there were long streaks where the liquid had run down, and thick drops at the bottom. It removed the streaks and about half of the hardened drops, but the rest had to be scrubbed vigorously.

Wax: I use candles at the dinner table and sometimes get wax on the tablecloth. This did nothing to remove it.

Laundry stains: I've used this on at least a half dozen different kinds of stains, all of which were mentioned on the container. I found it about as effective as the average laundry stain remover, not in any way exceptional.

Mildew: I gave it a try although, if you have a mildew-prone bathroom as I do, you may have already discovered that the only thing helpful is bleach diluted with water and sprayed on the surfaces. This did nothing at all to remove or prevent mildew.

In all, I found this product cleaned reasonably well, but not better than products for which I've paid much less. Admittedly, I haven't tried every single usage mentioned on the container, so perhaps there is something it cleans well enough to justify the price.

My boyfriend and I bought this hot dog machine and we love it. We cook everything (round) on it. Like sausages, sweet, hot and chinese, brats and even corn on the cob. It takes about 45 min for the sausages. But so worth it. Leaves the meat with a crisp crunchy edge. Not a flame broiled burnt edge like a grill would. Everyone that comes to our house thinks it's the best. It's not like I've seen this in a lot of my friends houses. If your on Amazon looking for one of these hot dog cooking machines. After buying it I realized that I need one of those hook things to lower and raise the bird from the oil. I came to Amazon to look for a hook and found this pot for so much less than what I paid and it included the hook I was looking for.

I was able to cook a 15lbs and 18lbs turkey in this (they were snug in there without touching the sides and cooked fine). I like how the pot has higher walls than the one I originally had which makes it a bit safer when the oil level rises and splashes.
