Coghlan's 725 Piezoelectric Lighter

It has become almost impossible to fine lighters for gas ranges and outdoor grills that don't use butane. And the butane lighters that are on the market have become impossible to operate for anybody with hand weakness or arthritis. I'm pretty big and strong and it is very hard for me to operate any of the best-known brands.

So I was really pleased to see a lighter using a piezoelectric mechanism, and from a company I know well as a supplier of good camping accessories.

These lighters do not need batteries; they produce a small spark when you press a button that causes a small crystal to release enough electrical charge. Dependable mechanism. No butane needed, nothing. Takes very little force. The lighters are designed for ease of use.

The only problem is the small size of the spark. It has to be placed in just the right place to ignite a gas flame. I would rather have one of the older, nolonger-available battery-operated lighters. But these will do and I like them.

Overall, a very good and useful product. Highly recommended.

I got this lighter because we have an antique stove and the burners need to be lit. I used to use a fueled lighter and I was using a leaky one without knowing it and it blew up on top of the stove. I was in the ER for 4 hours and lost my eyebrows. I was lucky! Never again will I use one of those.

Yes you need to use this just right. The spark comes out towards one side, not the center. Put that side by the gas. Works well!

YMMV but it doesn't have the least bit of trouble lighting my gas stove burners. It doesn't seem to make any difference precisely where I put the tip or how I orient it it seems to be able to light the gas regardless. A big improvement in safety and ease of use over having to hold a conventional butane lighter right next to the burner.

I had this item for only 2 months before it stopped sparking. Even when it did spark, my wife had a hard time lighting the stove; I had more luck. But the fact that it stopped working altogether is a real bummer. Wish I could return it.

I got this for lighting my propane torch and Bunsen burner. I am very pleased with the lighter. It doesn't make a flame itself it just provides the spark to light a gas burner. It's very easy to use You put the end in the stream where the gas burner will be burning and push the button on the sparker a few times until the flame catches. I like this enough that I plan to get another one for the garage too.

By the way, it's a heck of a lot cheaper to buy propane torches without the built-in piezo sparker and buy the sparker separately. If you have two hands that's the way to go!

This is supposed to be convenient and easy to clean I tried making grilled cheese with the small size of bread (just normal square bread) and the bread was too big for the spaces allowed. After cooking, it was very difficult to clean all the places where it overflowed (one piece of cheese the sizing was just not useful). I returned this product.

This is a quick and easy way to make a toasted or grilled sandwich. It heats up evenly. The sandwiches come out warm and tasty, and already cut into triangles. I would recommend this grill.

I had high hopes this little sandwich grill and I must say I'm a but disappointed. Even though it's a Cuisinart product it doesn't do anything more or anything better than the same type of grill available from any discount retailer for about $10 or $12. It says it's grill plates are non-stick, but every recipe in the book (pamphlet) that comes with it calls for the use of butter or oil to keep the food from sticking. Due to the high heat the grill puts out you can not use low fat versions of margarine, butter or other things like i can't believe it's not butter or spray bottle Parkay. It is easy to use, but everything has to be perfectly sized. You have to cut your bread before putting it into the grill. It also says any kind of bread can be used but in the next sentence says that bread cut no thicker than 1/2 an inch is recommended.

Bottom line is this grill isn't very versatile no matter what it says in it's Amazon description. I would probably return it, but my lovely husband already threw the original cuisinart box in the dumpster. Oh well. At least it will make grilled cheese! If I find anything else out after using it (read experimenting!) a little more I will add on to this review.

The grill is fairly new; so far it has been very good. I have only used "thin sliced bread" to grill cheese sandwiches. But, the closure has only one catch position, all the way down. That could be an inconvenience for thick sandwiches.

Weston Non-Stick Single Hamburger Press

First impressions when this item arrived was that it was lighter than I thought it would be. I can say that I don't think that affects this press too much, but I do wish it was a little heavier.

In this design, the meat sits on the flat surface, while the 'cup' or 'hole' that the meat is pressed in to to form the burger is what you push down on. This is good, since if the cup/hole is on the bottom it can be quite hard to get that burger out intact!

A big plus is that this press can make burgers of different thicknesses, but I do wish they'd pre-marked a couple of notches on the adjustment slide indicating the correct thickness for a 1/4 pounder and a 1/2 pounder. Easy to do just annoying they didn't think of that!

Finally, when making the burgers, I found that a quick light spray of Pam lets you slide that sucker off every time, making perfect patties.

Overall a good press with a couple of oversights that would have made it great but I haven't yet found anything else that is better.

Let the grilling begin!

So far, I've made about 200 patties using this model press. It has thickness markings on the spindle which is better than some models I've seen, but they only go down to 1/4 pound. It will adjust well below the markings though.

You definately want to use wax paper on both sides of the meat (I use Handy Whacks) to keep it from sticking in the form. Freshly ground meat seems less prone to sticking, but I certainly wouldn't call this unit "non-stick" as it does in the product description.

The patties it makes are larger in diameter than what some of the cheaper models make, so no "where's the beef" syndrome here.

The biggest struggle I have with it is portion control. If you put too much in, it can't squeeze out the excess because of the lip on the bottom half. Instead, it just doesn't close all the way and makes the burgers thicker and uneven. If you put in too little, the patties are visibly deformed. I'm going to try an ice cream scoop for portioning and see if this helps.

I picked up this griddle and do burgers on it, seems to cook really well and distribute the heat well. Make sure you have a plan to empty the grease though ievery once and a while because it'll start a fire if you dont :)

Stay away from this griddle. It does not distribute heat in the least. You end up with extreme hot spots in the middle where stuff burns instantly, and you can actually put your hand on the edge without burning it (as a sign of how little it spreads heat.) The only positive I can say is that it didnt catch on fire or explode. Worst purchase ever on amazon. Will try to return if can do so after using.

BBQ Grill Towel

Like the other reviewer, I purchased this as a gag gift for a sun-loving family member. The towel is much smaller than most useful beach towels and the fabric is quite thin and rough. It served its purpose as the gag gift, but I'm not sure how well this towel will hold up.

I gave my lifeguard nieces and nephews this towel as a joke. We live in the Southwest where it's pretty darn hot, so you often feel like you're being BBQed. It's more of a novelty towel, as it isn't very plush. Great, fun gift!

True Blood Merlotte's Bar and Grill Pint Glass

Mr. Bar-B-Q 18-Piece Stainless-Steel Grill Tool Set

In theory this is a nice set, and I like all of the different tools -but I bought this as a gift, and I'm going to return it. It just looks too cheap. The wooden handles are chipped in some places, there's almost no finish on them, and the plastic case is really flimsy and cheap looking. Perhaps if I was buying them for myself I wouldn't mind, but I'd be embarrassed to give this as a gift.

The plus about this set is the sheer number of things you get. I especially liked the idea of getting a set of knives with this....

The minus is just about everything else. The case is cheap shoddy plastic. The large tools are all TOO LARGE and bulky, I found them to be rather unwieldy. The worst thing about them, believe it or not, is that the rubber grips STINK to high heaven. They must off-gas like crazy or something because I found it to be seriously offensive (it's a very chemical sort of odor, I ended up cutting the rubber off from the most-used tools and throwing it out). The basting brush is COMPLETELY USELESS the bristles are made from a plastic-based material, so guess what happens when you try to baste a hot piece of meat? They melt, if you're lucky they just melt together and not right into your piece of chicken...This probably matches the smelly, off-gasing rubber gribs in terms of stupidity...Anyway, I would recomend getting some other tools, they are probably more expensive for a reason..
