Central Air A-C DraftShields® 14"x14" Cover

I bought 7 Battic Door draft shields and found them easy to install over central air conditioning grills. An Energy Audit team pointed out this product as a "low-hanging fruit" in my efforts to make my house more energy efficient. In cool weather, it makes sense not to let heat go up into the attic, and also to prevent cold from falling down through these "holes." Since I also had additional insulation and air sealing done in the attic, I don't know the specific effect of just the draft shields, but on cool spring days and nights, the furnace no longer comes on. I will be removing these draft shields now that it is air conditioning season, and will store them to re-install next fall when it stays cool again. I bought these and had to return them. The product is perfectly fine, but if your vents are too close to the wall

you can't get them on. These covers have a lip and the lip part won't fit if your vent is close to the edge of the wall. I wish this had not happened because i really need these.

I purchased this product to prevent cold air from blowing directly onto one of my employees. The assembly and installation took less than 1 minute, and my employee is much more comfortable as a result. The vent cover can be removed easily once the weather turns colder and we swich from A/C to heat. It blends in well with the ceiling, and has been worth the investment.

Bayou Classic Ash Rake

I'm glad I ordered this rake. It's much wider than some of the other brand name ash rakes. I have one of the Vision Grills ceramic kamados sold at Costco. It fits in the lower vent easily and also comes in handy for poking the embers and lifting grates. The metal is thick and the end is welded on solidly. I'm really glad I didn't pay $20 for one of the other tools. This one is everything I need it to be. At $10 including shipping, it's a good deal.

I really thought it would be a bit wider and "beefier". Not sure how long it will last but it was only $7.50 or so (plus $7.50 shipping and handling). I might have paid $7.50 for it from a store but $15? No.

To cut to the chase Anolon has changed some things about this griddle since I bought mine in 2007, but I still highly recommend it. I love the size, the ease of cleaning, and the ability to place it in the oven up to 400F. The metal turner that comes with this is also high quality like the other Anolon utensils that I've purchased. The metal turner has left some marks on the griddle, but the non-stick performance is so far unchanged.

"A video review of a GRIDDLE?! Seriously?" I hear ya. :D You certainly don't need to watch it to get my recommendation...but you do need to watch it to see my dog Niki. :) (I recommend the outtake at the end.) I just wanted to make this video because I've owned a set of Anolon Advanced cookware, including this griddle, for five years now and I love them. In particular, I love the double burner griddle. I really can't say that strongly enough. I've used it countless times to make pancakes with outstanding results. The coating has stood up wonderfully for over five years of stove and oven use on all of the cookware, as have the handles.

This new griddle is a little different, though, so I couldn't just say that it'll work and last the same way. While the coating has the same name, now the coating is listed as being metal-utensil safe, so I put it to the test. Also, this new griddle is about 50% thinner than the older one, meaning that it's lighter weight (which is nice) but also potentially slightly less even in cooking. Also, at least on the two griddles that I have, the coating on the new griddle is not as smooth or shiny as it is on my original one.

COOKING TESTS

I've only cooked pancakes on my original griddle and have only used nylon utensils. To test out the new griddle, I wanted to do more than pancakes to give a fuller review, as well as use the included metal turner. So far, I've baked bread sticks from fresh dough in the oven at 375F, cooked pancakes (two and three at a time), cooked scrambled eggs, and reheated pizza slices on the stove. For the most part, everything turned out great. I have two things that I want to note, though:

(*) After cooking the egg, I noticed marks on the surface of the griddle (shown in the video). After experimenting with the turner, I found that these were caused by scraping with the turner flipped over. I was still using the front flat edge, and I can't see or feel any burrs on that edge, but it will leave marks with even slight amounts of pressure.

(*) I cooked three pancakes at a time (one over each burner area and one in between) to check how even the cooking was. All of them came out great, but it was clear that the heating was uneven over the surface of the griddle, being cooler in between the burners. Perhaps due to the thinner construction, but I can't say for sure. Still good, IMO, but not perfect.

METAL-SAFE?

So, is the coating metal safe? I'd say, "mostly." Scraping the scrambled egg with the turner flipped around left marks, so I just tried scraping the griddle with the turner while not cooking. When using the turner right-side up, it left no marks. Flipped over, it marked with very little pressure. I can't see or feel any burrs on the turner, so I'm not sure why. However, the marks are definitely there. The nice thing is that they seem to be purely aesthetic. The non-stick performance has not been affected.

VERDICT

I still give this a very high set of marks. The marks caused by the metal turner are aesthetic and don't seem to have affected the non-stick performance at all. I'll likely switch to using my Anolon nylon utensils, though.

I've read where this model doesn't work well on flat-surface stoves because it's not completely flat, but I can't address that. It works wonderfully on my gas stovetop, and I imagine it's the same on raised electric burners.

The turner that is included is much nicer than I had expected it to be, and although it's called "mini," it's a good size even for flipping pancakes.

Overall, highly recommended.

This Anolon Advanced Hard Anodized Nonstick Griddle looks almost identical to the KitchenAid Gourmet Hard Anodized Nonstick 18" x 10" Double Burner Griddle, but there are differences that make the KitchenAid Gourmet Griddle my favorite.

The KitchenAid Gourmet Griddle has sides that are sloped less so it is easier to get your turner under pancakes to flip, but still high enough to keep a dozen scrabbled eggs contained. The Anolon Griddle has straiter sides so you have to spend more time digging the scrambled eggs out of the edges.

The KitchenAid Gourmet Griddle has handles that set away from the sides than the Anolon Griddle, making it cooler for me to grab and move.

The Anolon Griddle says it is able to handle metal utensils and the KitchenAid Gourmet Griddle does not, but I already have all nylon, silicone and bamboo utensils for my other nonstick cookware so this doesn't really mean much to me. It is not worth the extra money that Anolon charges for their griddle; $48 vs. $62 at the time of this review.

The KitchenAid Gourmet Griddle has noticeably superior nonstick coating as far as food slipping off the surface. The Anolon griddle surface feels ever so slightly gritty compared to the KitchenAid.

To test these I had them side by side on my stove and cooked identical batches of scrambled eggs and pancakes for 27 people for breakfast over Thanksgiving weekend, so they got quite the workout.

I took off one star for inferior surface and another star off for price related to value of product. If they were damaged or lost, I would pay to replace the KitchenAid Gourmet Griddle.

PS FYI: The metal turner that comes with this griddle has a curved tip, so it is much less useful than a strait edged turner, they should have made it with a strait edge and had the corners be the same shape as the pan's corners for you could use it to dig out food from the pan's edges easier. Unimpressed.

After using this product for the last few months, I can say that it is sturdy and handles well. I still prefer to use non-metal utensils. I'm not totally sold on any product being scratch proof enough for the non-stick surface to be resilient.

When placed over two small burners, the centre section is about 10 degrees cooler. The temperature differencial is good for cooking eggs while bacon/sausage is cooking on the ends. I also prefer to use it to make toast instead of a toaster. All-in-all, great so far.

This griddle is pretty much perfect. It heats evenly, the nonstick works like a charm, it cleans very easily, and the pour spout drain thingie in the corner has saved me a lot of bacon grease mishaps. Most importantly for me, though it is LIGHT. Incredibly light, especially if you have any cast iron pans to compare it to. I love my cast iron, but lifting them on/off the stove and in/out of the sink is a serious workout! I've used the griddle about 8 or 9 times so far (for grilled sandwiches, burgers, bacon and pancakes), and it looks good as new. Great product.

My favorite double griddle of all time was the KitchenAid non-stick enamel. I was so sad when they discontinued that item. Enter the Anolon double griddle. As much as I loved the KitchenAid version, this one has one several advantages:

1. Longevity. I went through two of the KitchenAid version even with very careful treatment. I never put it in the dishwasher and never used metal utensils with it. Still the non-stick surface degraded fairly rapidly for such a high priced item.

2. Metal utensils will not destroy the non-stick surface

3. For folks with enamel stovetops the Anolon double griddle has an added appeal: it won't adhere to your stove if you don't use a "bridge"

The only cons I can come up with, but don't keep me from loving this:

1. Cannot be washed in the dishwasher (this isn't a con for me, but may be for others)

2. It doesn't seem to hold the heat quite so well and my former double griddles, but this is not a deal breaker.

Don't understand the low reviews on this one. It is a very quiet fan. Of course, it's not totally silent, but I have it in my office underneath my desk. I have no problem talking on the phone or with my coworkers. So when I start having hot flashes, I turn it on, and it does the job. Never had to go above the first setting, yet. (Got it because I share a thermostat with my boss, she is cold natured and only has one vent in her office. I have two vents four time the size of her's in my office, which is the same size as her's. The building we are in was built in 1965. I keep the thermostat set on 75 most of the time, but it could be 80 in my office and 65 in her's.) So, the fan has turned out to be a lifesaver for me. The cost was a plus too. I would recommend this fan to anyone who is looking for a quick fix in trying to stay cool in a room/office, which is just too warm.

While this is a fairly quiet fan, it is not silent. However it is very powerful for such a small fan, with 3 power settings. The lowest power setting produces excellent air flow. I only wish there's one more power setting that is lower than the lowest setting. The high power setting is very powerful and provides excellent air flow. The design of the fan is excellent. This fan would be perfect if it had a timer built-in, and if it had an additional lower power setting button. Power setting buttons 1,2,3 are easy to press/operate. The ionizer feature is very nice. Overall this is a fan well-made.

This fan puts out a great breeze and the ionization is noticeable even on my desk in my large office. However, it is definitely not quiet. I've resorted to placing TWO mousepads underneath it and that has reduced the noise about two-thirds.

Considering that the fan's title says "silent", this fan is as silent as a helicopter in my bedroom.

Also, the stand is somewhat clumsy and the fan tilts somewhat upwards, not directly at you.

Calphalon Unison Nonstick Nonstick Grill Pan and Griddle Set 2-pc.

These pans heat unevenly to the point where they simultaneously burn and undercook food. We have not had this problem with our older Calphalon or All-Clad pans. The uneven heat distribution is undoubtedly related to the thickness of the aluminum. The bottom of the pans are 3.9mm thick. Our older Calphalon pans are 5.5mm thick--40% thicker! Indeed the pans feel lightweight and cheap, similar to non-stick pans you buy at the local supermarket. I suggest you avoid these pans and either buy a cheaper item of similar quality or hunt for better quality.

This review is based on 6 weeks experience with these pans.

I received these pans as part of a House Party contest I entered. I started using them the day I got them, and have used them almost everyday since. The trick with these pans is to not turn your burners on high and to use very little oil on the pans when cooking food that might stick or brush food that might stick with oil. We love fish tacos wrapped in lettuce leaves and the grill pan never fails to turn out moist beautiful seared fillets. It also grills a perfect fillet Mignon, chicken breasts and vegetables like asparagus. The slide pan makes great omelets, crepes and pancakes to name just a few of its many uses. And they clean up like a dream. I have given the set to both my sons as gifts and they are equally pleased with their performance.

Napoleon Prestige & Mirage Charcoal Tray

It is not a drop in perfect fit for the Mirage Grill but it does work. It sits on the SS bars. If you just want smoke you could do the same with a Lodge Logic Skillet Spoon Rest or similar. The build quality is very good, Heavy cast iron and should last a lifetime. This will fit many other grills so check the dimensions 15.2 x 14.6 x 1.8 inches.

If you want a heavy duty item, this is it. No complaints their. I could not use it for my intended use but the item is well built.

So most may assume that I bought this product to affix to the wall in a bar or game room to open various bottles of beer. You would be close, but not right on. I actually affixed this item to the fuse box cover of my Harley-Davidson motorcycle to open various bottles of beer. I simply purchased a couple of rubber washers of the appropriate size to ensure water does not enter the fuse panel.

My review is a glowing one. Every bottle of beer has been opened flawlessly and with the ease expected from such a product. It is a definite conversation piece and I am asked about it all the time.

I do not advocate the consumption of alcohol when riding a motorcycle, but at various bike nights or while working on my bike in the garage, this product has proven indispensable. This is a solid product that I full expect to stand up to a lot of use. Whether that use is measured in bottles or years remains to be seen, but I do not foresee having to purchase another one of these. Quality seems as good as any other Starr-X, and as many of us know, 70 year old Starr-X openers oxidized totally brown still work perfectly. It is mounted to the rear bumper of my truck, so the durability of the finish will be tested-this thing stays outside.

Wish I knew how the finish will look in 3 years, but so far it is promising enough.

KRUPS 654-75 Waffle Chef 4-Slice Belgian Waffle Maker with Nonstick Plates LED Indicators and Stain

I was a little worried about purchasing this waffle maker based on a few of the previous reviews, but in my experience it makes great waffles and cleans up very easily. After reading the instructions carefully, it's clear that some of the reviewers misinterpreted the functions of the two lights on the waffle maker. Keep the following in mind and you should be able to make excellent waffles every time:

1. The machine must be preheated until the green light turns off, which tells you that it has reached the correct temperature for cooking.

2. It should then be lightly sprayed, top and bottom, with a cooking oil spray.

3. Add a bit less than 1/2 cup of waffle mix to each section of the waffle maker. Be careful not to overfill if the batter runs over the sides, this will make it more difficult to clean. A slight run over shouldn't be a problem, though, as it will come off when the waffle is removed after cooking.

4. After filling all the bins, close the waffle maker (do NOT latch the cover down!) and cook for 4:00 minutes (you can go over this by a few seconds for crispier waffles). Do not pay any attention to the lights while cooking they have nothing to do with cooking time. One simply tells you that the power is on, and the other shows you when the cooking element cycles on and off to maintain temperature. (Yes, I agree that the lights are not very useful at this point.) Just use an accurate timer.

5. Open the lid (I use the latch to avoid touching the handle, which does get somewhat hot, but not to the point of burning in my experience) and use a plastic spatula to remove the waffles.

I also suggest using a quality Belgian waffle mix such as Krusteaz to make waffles as good as any restaurant waffles.

I ordered one and during use the handle became too hot to touch. I had to open with an oven mit which is very clumsy. I called Krups and they said they have gotten a few calls about this and to exchange it. I asked if my new one will have the same problem and they said "no". Well, I exchanged it for a new one and it had the same problem. Obviously, I returned it and am now shopping for a different brand.

Okay, the handle does indeed get hot. This is annoying to me and I think calling it a cool-touch handle is a bit insulting to my intelligence. Nevertheless, my kids got this for me for a very reasonable price and it does make excellent waffles. The trick is to get one of those heat-proof silicon brushes to apply oil on the grids and use exactly 1/3 cup of batter in each waffle. Too much batter and it gets very messy, making it difficult to clean. Cook 4 minutes max. I undercook the last 2 batches and then save them in the freezer. The kids get them out and toast them in my toaster oven for breakfast on another morning. I usually use the Krusteaz Belgian waffle mix. I also use a blunt wooden spoon to wedge the waffles out of the grid. I wipe it down as soon as it is cool and it isn't so hard to clean (as long as you don't let batter dribble everywhere. This is where technique comes in. No machine can help you with that. You just have to get it by experience.) It does store conveniently upright in the cabinet. So all in all, for the price, I'm happy with it.

Another thing to add to the list of problems (hot handle, ridiculous tiny, deep crevices to clean with a toothpick) other reviewers have mentioned is the lack of a "floating hinge". It is unable to keep the two plates parallel as the waffle expands. So the front opens further, resulting in a back dark half and light front half. Of course, if you underfill, you'll get a dark bottom and light top.

The Krups brochure included has a motto on the front: "Quality by design." Well, quality is indeed directly related to design and this unit has rather little of either.

(BTW, some reviewers seem to have misunderstood the purpose of the "ready" light. As explained in the manual, it merely indicates whether the heating element is on. You can start baking when it first turns off, but when it comes back on it doesn't necessarily mean the waffle is done. It just means the plates cooled to the point where the thermostat kicked back in.)

The Krups Belgian Waffle Maker is a great appliance, make no doubt about it. Don't pay much heed to the review that are 8 years old... they must have improved the product since then because it's is not a problem in 2009.

Before first use, use a pastry brush and spread on a layer of shortening. After heating, hit it with a coating of spray cooking oil and your first waffle might just release... there is always a risk of the very first waffle sticking... no matter what you do. Spray it once before each use (each batch, not each waffle) and it should be smooth sailing. Don't ever try to clean it... that will just make it sticky again. Waffle irons are like cast iron cookware... wiped, never washed. Wipe off any batter with a dishrag when it's cooled off and if the excess oil bothers you, wipe it down with a paper towel. As long as you're using it about once a month, it will be fine. If you're a once-a-year user, then, absolutely clean it as the oil will go rancid.

Replacement Probe for Grill Alert

Before giving up on your wireless thermometer, try replacing the probe! I'm on my third probe now, which is frustrating, but these things are only $15 bucks. A new 'Grill Alert' is $70! Each probe that I've had seems to last a few years before I start getting screwy readings. When I replace the probe, the unit works fine again. I think the probes are only rated to 400 degrees, so that's definitely the weak link in this otherwise excellent system. Now I'm ordering two probes, just so that I can have a spare ready to go.

The probe has a braided metal outer jacket on the cable that causes any flexing of the cable to strain the cable where it exits the probe. This condition causes failure (shorting of the sensor wires to the jacket) at that point. I have had 2 other probes with this type of cable that failed in that mode. The best type of cable is a thick silicone jacket like used on microwave temp probes.

My thermometer kept losing the signal during cooking. After replacing the batteries several times, I started shopping for a new one. That's when I stumbled onto this replacement probe. It works perfectly and seems to be a little sturdier and better built than the original. The cord is a couple of inches shorter than the original which is why I didn't give it 5 stars. Delivery was lightning fast. I needed this for my Thanksgiving turkey but forgot to order until the Sunday before. It was delivered on Tuesday!

Bought "Grillfloss" about twpo months go. Have given it a good workout on Weber natural gas / stainless grated grill. Does a great job cleaning top and bottom of grates. Also find brass brush helps, as well. Combo does thorough job. Very pleased...innovative and functional.

This is a great product if the grates are a bit thinner. The annoying thing about this is that when I drag it, the items would screech and sometimes get stuck if you pull it at a certain angle. The head seemed a bit too flimsy because I have to constantly bend it back. I hope it doesn't snap off on me. I've used it a few times and sometimes I get tired of it and use the brush for a fast scrubbing. I would use this if I need to get the gunk off the bottom of the grates.

I use this on my Weber grill; what a terrific tool! It's so simple and it makes cleaning your grill very easy. Requires changing of the "blade" every so often, but if you grill a lot, you NEED this tool, it will save you a lot of time.

There can't be a better designed and operating grill cleaner than the Grillfloss. It does exactly what the title says... it flosses the bars of the grill grate. There's a dual size cleaning head which perfectly fits the size of my Weber. Two swipes (one forward, and one back after turning the handle a half-turn) and ALL of the crust and build-up is GONE. I could not improve on this if I tried. It's worth the money, BRAVO

Grill owners this is one tool that you have to have. This tool cleans the gunk off of your grill easily. I used to have to completely take my grills out of the BBQ and scrape them off on the ground and that was not as effective as using this tool. I could never get my grill as clean as I would like it to be. With tool you can clean the funky junk off the top and bottom of the grill. Highly recommended!
