Maverick Two-In-One Oven and Roasting Digital Thermometer with Timer

Maverick Two-In-One Oven and Roasting Digital Thermometer with TimerOrdered thru Amazon sold by dealer "Ace Photo".

We had one helleva time trying to locate a digital oven thermometer. The few that are out there are $80 to $100 or more. Lots of thermometers meant to use as food probes are there, but they aren't meant to measure oven temps since they have a max reading o only 300 degrees, or so. lots of analog thermometers which we did try but are slow to respond any many aren't accurate.

We needed an oven thermometer because we new our oven was way off. Turned out to be off by 45-50 degrees.

This is very easy to read, and the temp for the probe is easy to set so the unit can alert you when the selected .

The alert sound is VERY quiet to the point of being useless. Even though the timer unction works well the fact you can't hear it when time is up makes that function worthless. For our purpose, this product is adequate the fact there is no usable sound simply means you will need to look at the digital readouts to see when the oven is at the right temp to start cooking and then read the readout for the probe to see when it indicates the "done" temp is reached.

Rating for thermometer both oven and probe 4 stars (took off 1 star for almost inaudible alert tones)

Rating for timer (which is a minor function) 1 star

Dealer provided excellent communication about staus of order and it shipped within a day or two.

Greetings...

I purchased this Maverick "Redi-Chek" ET-85 for use in my smoker for monitoring pit and meat temperatures. Unfortunately, I don't think it's gonna work out well for that application. The main problem is that the temperature probe cable just isn't long enough. It's just over 36" long which is actually usable if your meat is on the top rack (I'm using a Weber Smokey Mountain Smoker). If the meat is on the bottom rack, the base unit would have to be located right next to the smoker without much slack in the cable. The way the temp probe is made makes it impossible to run the probe into the smoker through a small hole such as a grommet modification, but it will fit through the top air vent hole. You can also run it between the lid and its base, but that creates an airflow issue in the smoker. So, as for its benefit to MY intended use, it doesn't look very promising at all. I bought this, possibly, without doing enough research to find out if it would meet my needs.

That being said, this temperature probe will be a FANTASTIC tool for several other applications. I can use it very easily with my gas grill if I want to measure internal food temps and/or the internal grill temp, but the grill/oven temp scale on this unit does max out at 572° F. If you are trying to fine tune a gas grill's internal temp to 300° or 350° (or anything under 572° this probe will be a big help. The other application I'll use this probe for is measuring the temperature inside my mash tun when making beer. This tool is absolutely PERFECT for that! It's very accurate, which is important in this process. A few degrees one way or the other when mashing malted barley can make significant changes in the beer.

Even though this tool won't work for me very well for my original intended purpose, I'm still giving it five stars because its a fantastic tool for what it is. I can't fault it for not meeting the purpose I had hoped for.

I purchased 3 of these thermometers to use in my BBQ vending business. All 3 units have malfunctioned within 3 months of the purchase within only 2 uses. One was defective right out of the package, the oven temp set button was unresponsive. And on all 3, the sensory cable does not effectively attach/plug into the control unit to the point that they fall out which renders the thermometer useless. The only good thing about it is the "concept" of a meat/oven temp combination.

I never make reviews, but...this items is of SUCH VERY POOR QUALITY..... I purchased this item twice with a period of time between purchases. Each of the items failed at the plug socket where the probe connects; I have been very careful with the items trying not to cause a problem. On 12/25/2011 while barbaquing a 23 lb prime rib ($160 of beef), the plug socket failed and would not hold (again) the probe. I no longer was able to accurately monitor and control the barbaque temperature. Luckly, I had a backup, high quality, electronic meat thermometer (purchased at Macys) but no oven thermometer. Again, a VERY POOR QUALITY product. This review is to try and help those who may want a reasonable quality and reliable electronic thermometer for quality cooking.

There were certainly no problems with the accuracy of this thermometer, and I was very satisfied with it on the two occasions I used it; however, the third time was unlucky. The probe would not plug into the thermometer rendering the product useless; unfortunately, this occurred one month after the return date.
