Tel-Tru BQ300 Barbecue Thermometer, 3 inch black dial with zones, 4 inch stem, 100/500 degrees F

Tel-Tru BQ300 Barbecue Thermometer, 3 inch black dial with zones, 4 inch stem, 100/500 degrees FThis thermometer is excellent for telling the temp at the location installed. I have one on my smoker and one on my Weber Kettle. When smoking, I rely upon a digital with the probe attached to the grate directly under the product. In the Weber, it is excellent for maintaining a good barbeque temp and grill preheat.

In difference to the first review who seems to expect different results than the intended use of a top mounted thermometer, I find these thermometers excellent as well as handsome and easy to read.

We have 3 of these Tel-Tru BBQ 300s. They are easy to see, look great, and most importantly are very accurate.

I have two of these, one on my Weber Kettle OTG and another on my Weber gas grill. The one installed on the gas grill replaced the Weber temperature gauge that the grill came with (which was not too bad BTW). These are large and easy to read thermometers that passed the boiling water test with dead-on 212F readings. In my opinion these are necessary in conjunction with a digital temp probe for smoker/grill management. In the case of the Weber kettle, this thermometer is mounted in the top near the outlet damper and I know that with an indirect fire I need this thermometer to read between 275-300F in order to get the grate temps that I want for a nice long, slow smoke.

I'd heard great things on meat smoker forums about this product. I was disappointed that it arrived later than I anticipated and that shipping seemed expensive. It is substantial and thick and seems like a tank of a gauge... However...

Most of all, this product isn't really that useful for smoking meat. For my smoker and most smokers, all you're really going to register is the temperature of the steam at the top of the smoker. I would recommend getting a temperature gauge that goes on top of your grill near where the meat is actually cooked if accuracy is your aim.

If you are going to do some sort of Kentucky windage recording using this to measure your baseline, I'm sure it will work fine. It seems pretty sturdy but I haven't had it long enough to give a real opinion on that side of it.

I bought the maverick temperature gauge on Amazon and it digitally sends me the temperature of my meat and the temperature where the meat or ribs are being smoked (right above the grill). If I had it all to do over again, I'd never have ordered this product because the Maverick does a very good job.

One other thing, it's pathetic that you don't get a washer and nut to lock this thing down. It's an awkward size nut you can't get at lowes or home depot. Tel-Tru will sell you an "installation kit" for like 6 bucks on their site.
