Steven Raichlen Best of Barbecue Stainless Chili Pepper Roasting Rack and Corer Set
Works great, easy to clean. Good feature is the fact that the holes are in a line (unlike other brands), which makes it easier to skewer the chiles to hold them in place. When shopping for chiles, buy ones that will drop down into the hole easily, and try to choose straight ones, which are easier to ream out.Works great! The cheese doesn't run out of the pepper halves the way I used to cook them (sliced lengthwise). The corer makes this so simple. The only drawback is cleaning. Directions say NOT to put in the dishwasher. It's not terrible to clean when used on the gas grill, but the smoker is a different story, hence only 4 stars. I think I'll try rubbing it with oil prior to using next time. Makes Great jalapeno poppers.Buy Steven Raichlen Best of Barbecue Stainless Chili Pepper Roasting Rack and Corer Set Now
Works very well. I prefer to wrap my bacon around the outside of the pepper and that does not fit as well. The holes are indeed a bit large for your typical pepper, but my local grocery has big peppers so that is not a problem for me.I had seen similar racks in use on a trip to the southwest and was going to purchase one in a shop. My host commented that She had gotten hers from Amazon for half the cost and I would not have the inconvenience of packing the rack for the trip home. She was right This rack is well made of stainless steel, durable, and has the added advantage of coming with a tool to core the seeds from the peppers. I made some jalapeno poppers, and some hot hungarian peppers on the grill last night and this rack worked as advertised. This rack would probably also work with banana peppers or any similar shaped pepper. Holds the peppers upright and allows the heat to roast the pepper evenly in about a half hour on a Weber with the lid closed (Grill was already hot from other grilling). I barbecued pork steaks and when I put them in the roasting pan of sauce to tenderize, I started the peppers. By the time I had them cleaned, stuffed, and cooked the meat was also ready to serve. The rack also functions as a work stand while stuffing the peppers!

I ordered two of the cookers and they work great...but the corers are way too big for most peppers. Then I got some HUGE jalapenos, and still had to use my potato peeler with the edges sharpened.Tuesday, June 24, 2014
T-fal A8571364 Specialty Nonstick Dishwasher Safe 10.25-Inch Grilled Cheese Griddle Cookware, Black
It's a good unit. Just don't overheat it. Don't turn the burner on high for very long. Use a plastic spatula to avoid scratches and it should last a long time. See the customer photos I posted to see exactly what you get.I have many T-Fal products and most have been of good quality. This griddle is made of very thinly pressed metal.
It works great for sandwiches but make sure you do not take it from the hot stove to the sink the water will warp the metal. This item is absolutely amazing...especially for the price! I've used other, more expensive griddle pans and received less desirable results. With this pan at the same cooking temperatures used with the others, I get perfect results every time! I highly recommend this item to anyone who wants ideal results and an easy clean-up effort!I absolutely love this product and use it more than I originally thought I would. I would certainly buy this again. The Wife and I bought this for use in our RV. The size is perfect for the two of us. The non stick coating is great.

Weber 2740301 Summit S-470 Propane Tuck-Away Rotisserie Grill, Stainless Steel
A very hiqh-quality piece, this is my third or fourth Weber gas grill, not counting the several charcoal kettles I've had over the years. Quite heavy, much more than my Genesis model that it replaced. I read the reviews before purchasing and want to reinforce the need to buy the proper (and non-vented!) cover for this grill. If you leave it uncovered in the rain, be prepared for a real mess. The grease collection system acts like its supposed to, funneling everything that falls through the grate into the drip pan including rain that gets in through all the vent holes above the burners. Even a moderate rain, 1/2 inch or less, will fill the drip pan to overflowing and the grease inside will float off the top and into the interior cabinet. Unpleasant and messy to clean up.
The cover you want is the Weber 7554 premium cover for the Summit 400-series.Ive had this grill for 6 months now and am happy to report all is well.
Very easy to set up. Maybe 20 minutes. Just connect the main pieces
Heats quickly and can get to around 750 F with all burners firing
Searing element works well
Night light is great after dusk. Just the right amount of light
Attracts finger sprints and dirt but to be expected from stainless steel
Infrared Rotisserie works well the first time I used it. Chicken was moist and golden brown
Had a problem with the rotisserie motor and one call to Weber had a new one at my front door in 2 days. They were great.
Happy and would buy again

11/10 Update
I have had the grill for 1.5 yrs now and noticed that the paint on the sides of the hood started bubbling and peeling even though it has been constantly under the Weber cover since new. I called up customer support to tell them and within 1.5 minutes with her on the phone, she said they would send me out a new hood immedietly at no charge. I received it within 3 days. This company is incredible. All other companies should take note.

I've just read a few reviews that echo what I'm about to report. I too have owned a Genesis for 12 years and loved it, that was a $500 grill and performed rain or shine flawlessly. Only when the legs started rusting out did I decide to splurge(after 12 years, this is justified!). I buy this s470 for more than three times what I paid for the Genesis and I can't leave it outdoors. I have beautiful brick pavers in my yard that were ruined because like others have reportedthe slightest rainfall floods the grease pan creating a disaster in the cabinet and whatever lies beneath. The inability to stay outdoors is only one of many flaws this grill has.
I use the rotisserie often and on level ground, the shaft walks out of the motor drive after about a 1/2 hr of turning causing your chicken or whatever to burn on one side. I had to put bricks under the right wheels to prevent this, Another tip is to make a little tape flag and wrap it around the shaft so you can see from far away if the shaft walked out--AGAIN! The grooves on the shaft were designed too wide allowing lateral travel. P.O.S.
The burner knobs are wobbly from the factory, I thought it was just mine but when I went back to the store I saw that all summit knobs are wobbly-not exactly what I was was expecting for $1700.
Utensil Hooks are not even hooks but button like protusions that cause your tools to fall with the slightest bump, I'm using Weber's pro tools and the only thing than hangs on well is the cleaning brush that has a leather loop rather than the metal loops.
Why did Weber make this grill mostly stainless steel and neglect the cabinet? it had the potential to be a great grill.
I do like a few things about it:
-It can cook very evenly, Lighted knobs are an asset at night, wheels are beefy and ride well over a rough surface but tools are falling at the same time, It's a nice looking grill but what's the point if I have to cover it right after using it.
Overall, avoid this grill like the plauge until the fix it's obvious design flaws.I bought this to replace a older natural gas summit I had to let go when I sold my home. The qquality of steeel in the older unit was in my opinion superior. However this unit has several improvements. The burner ignition system is greatly improved. The utensil hooks don't interfer with the door opening. The rotisserie spit and forks have on board storage. The sear burner really works. This uniit burns much hotter than the old but this may be due to the propane fuel. Overall I would recommend this unit.
Want Weber 2740301 Summit S-470 Propane Tuck-Away Rotisserie Grill, Stainless Steel Discount?
This is a good grill but it is taking a while to get familiar with it. The box is not as air tight as my previous Weber so the smoker is not as effective. But I learned to turn off the left burner and the smoker works much better. I love the sear unit and the rotisserie. I also use a round basket to cook meats indirectly with the rotisserie.I've had three Weber grills this size and style. The other two are still going strong with friends. The first one is about 20 years old. The one I just replaced is 15 years old. I don't think you can beat a Weber.
I do not like the stainless steel it is impossible to keep clean. I would not buy SS if the 470 features were available on another Weber grill the sear unit, the rotisserie and the smoker with its dedicated burner.
Delivery was great. They had a small van and backed in the driveway. The delivery man had it unloaded and ready to wheel anywhere. Assembly was easy once it was lifted from the delivery box it takes two to lift out of the box.

NEW, Set of Two (2) 14-Inch Long, Grill Spatula, Turner Spatula, Barbecue BBQ Spatula, Solid Stainl
I guess the other reviewer didn't like the handle. The handle is fine to me. It's same as those stainless steel serving/cooking spoons restaurants use.The quality of the spatulas is super awesome. I already have one stainless steel spatula but wanted to have a backup. For this price you usually only get one so I'm sure I don't need to write too much about the price as you already know this is a good deal.
It said commercial grade and it's true. I used to work in a kitchen after my culinary school. This spatula really has the same or better quality they use at a professional kitchen.
It is not super flexible but it does have some flex in it. I accidentally bought a real flexible spatula before and I couldn't do a thing with that. I couldn't even cut eggs with it, it was that flexible. This one is flexible enough yet I am still able to cut eggs or hams and stuff.
Only thing though... it had stickers on the back of the handle and it was not easy to take off. hahaI should have paid more attention to what the pictures look like. The handles are mostly flat with edges pretty much the same as the spatula head, so not very comfortable in the hand. And they are not nearly as flexible as I had wanted. They are serviceable enough, so I won't be returning them, but I wouldn't buy them again if I had to replace these for any reason.

Island Bamboo 11-by-14-Inch Solana Cutting Board and Serving Tray
Beautiful cutting board, cleans off very easily. I gave this as a gift. I would def. recommend this cutting board.the board cracked/split in three after a while. The chopping board looks good with the stripped design, is the right size, is low priced and is light-weight.However, it got a little discolored after chopping colored peppers and tomatoes.
I would say it works well if you do not have a lot of cutting and chopping to do.

In my family of budding teen chefs, this cutting board/serving tray has gotten raves. The kids requested a bamboo cutting board after hearing their praises sung on food network. After looking at all the alternatives, I chose this one because it was decorative and a good usable size. The bamboo makes this a durable cutting board that has held up much better than others we've had. The light and dark pattern made by caramelizing the bamboo to make the darker sections is just beautiful. This makes a great display as serving tray. It has held up well to hard use by three teenage boys and was very economical. I highly recommend it.Want Island Bamboo 11-by-14-Inch Solana Cutting Board and Serving Tray Discount?

Rome Camp Ring Grill
not rated for a fire??? had to return after we went camping and on the first night the fire caused the grill to bow down.... weird. The price is right for this grate. Great size for grill rings at campgrounds and it fits nicely on the weber outdoor fireplace. Add cheap spring clips or extra bolts to the weber aluminum ring to turn it into a cooking fireplace. Wish I could find a more heavy duty grate at this size but for the price you can't go wrong. I believe I will get years out of this grate.updated in Jan 2012. Grate is holding strong. I see the price has dropped at amazon at this time making this an incredible deal. No need for the spring clips to put this grate on the weber outdoor fire place as it fits nicely on the aluminum ring.Loved this grill for the Weber Fire Pit, allows us to place a potato on top and call it a grill not outside fireplace.Good grill top just don't let be on a open flame and low, it will warp. but a good grillI purchased this grate for a backyard pit I built. It sits on a recycled oil drum which is surrounded by bricks. The first time I used it, was after the fire died down and the coals were nice and white. Even thou the coals were a good foot and a half away from the top of the drum, the grate buckled and warped. :( Now my burgers kind of slide to one section and each time I use it the grate gets even more distorted. I guess I need a iron grate...

Parrilla Asadora Arepas -Gas Range Grill-
I spent two weeks in Colombia and ate arepas cooked over a parilla like this every morning. This parilla certainly works, but I've noticed that sometimes the black paint from the parilla flakes off and ends up on the arepa. No bueno. But as I said, good for the price.I have three old "parrillas" and it was only when I found this that I was able to prepare perfect and crunchy arepas. I totally recommend it.

Rubbermaid 5F21 Deck Box with Seat
I had previously reviewed this product with one-start for falling apart all the time. After contacting the company, I was advised to turn the floor of the container over. I did. It solved the problem. The parts fit together much more securely. So give this a shot. The construction is a bit unorthodox as there are no screws that hold it together but once it is together, I was able to pick it up and move it without any issues. When putting on the side pieces I noticed that there are two pins that need to go into holes of the front and back panels. You can force the box together without making sure the pins go into the holes which would probably make for a sloppy fit. I imagine that is what happened with the people who's box fell apart.Overall, this is a great box and they have accessories for it also. I am using it to hold hot tub and grill supplies.

We use this out on the deck to store hot tub items as well as patio furniture covers and it works great. Living in the Seattle area we tend to get a bit of rain and it keeps everything dry as can be. Great product!Read Best Reviews of Rubbermaid 5F21 Deck Box with Seat Here
We have a pool area with a whole bunch of Rubbermaid storage products, most a few years old or more. They've been great with no wear or fading so when we wanted to replace a non-Rubbermaid deck box we bought two of the 5f21 model.I have to say I was disappointed to see some of the changes since my older models. One of the units left larger gaps where the modular pieces fit together, large enough that I felt water would get in. This unit also came with scratches on the front panel and was missing the plastic strips which are designed to keep the lid from exceeding 90 degrees when opened. Interestingly, the other unit assembled snuggly without any gaps.
My main gripe with the new design is the lid can no longer just snap closed to the main compartment anymore, instead just resting loose on top. There are matching loops to attach a lock, which I strongly suggest you slip something into to keep that lid on in a good wind. I can't figure out why they felt compelled to remove such a simple feature.
Want Rubbermaid 5F21 Deck Box with Seat Discount?
I just got my Rubbermaid deck box today. It was fairly simple to put together, but I did have to look at the instructions (on the side of the box) to figure out the little strap/screw arrangement.
The only problem I had was that my hammer didn't fit in the space to hit the hinge pegs into the lid. So I hit it with the side of a wrench. Problem solved.
I'll report back after a rain storm to see if it's watertight, but I've had the Rubbermaid slide-lid storage shed for years (keeps lawn mower, gardening stuff, bikes) and it has been wonderful! The inside doesn't get wet in rain. So I am fairly confident that the deck box, similar in construction, will be fine.
7-12-09 -Update
We had a huge rainstorm last night. Today I checked inside the deck box. Chair pads--dry. Charcoal -dry. Misc stuff---dry.
This box works for me!
3-4-10 -Update
Love this thing. We've had rain and snow, and everything inside is DRY--even the roll of paper towels!

Grill Alert Talking Remote Meat Thermometer
I used the thermometer about 7 or 8 times and it stopped working. I have seen several reviews complaining that the probe fails so I'm hoping that's the problem.Update 2/27/08: I ordered a new probe from Brookstone for $25 (incl. shipping) and it is a much sturdier design than the original. I assume they were getting a lot of complaints and returns so they redesigned it. So far the new probe is working fine. Interesting to note, I gave a negative review of this product on their web site and they never published it, although they sent me a thank you note for my review. I received this for Father's Day last year. I was skeptical but it actually works. I can put some tri-tip in the smoker and hang in the pool or chat with guests while keeping an eye on the large LCD display. The range is very good, I can sit in the pool with the display next to me on the deck (at least 20-30 feet away) or go back inside the house. It beeps and talks to you a few minutes before your food is at the desired temperature. I use it primarily for beef, and the settings (rare, medium, etc.) are pretty accurate. This is especially good for large cuts of beef since it is often difficult to gauge whether the meat is pink inside or not. I would highly recommend this. Easy to set-up, then all you do is select the type of meat and the desired cooking level. Pork and seafood default to only one setting choice (well-done) but you can just use the temperature readout to cook to the desired temp.

I have owned several of these and given a few away as gifts. I LOVE how well they work when they are brand new so when mine failed I bought new ones assuming I just got a lemon. THEY ARE ALL LEMONS. My observation of several units is that the average service life is from 3 to 6 uses. Sometimes a new probe fixes the problem ($20 ea) sometimes nothing (including hitting the reset button) helps. Look at other product reviews on different web sites; they all complain about how quickly the unit fails. You may also notice that several different brands all look alike with the same screen indicating that they are all the same unit sold under different brand names. With all the bad reviews of these things the firms selling these things should consider the ethics of selling something this expensive that only works a few times. Unfortunately the other brands of remote thermometers, from what I have seen, all seem to fail after only a few uses. This is a real drag because when they work, they work great, and I guess that's why I am so annoyed.

Have I owned one of this make and model? No. But I have owned 4 or 5 of the Webber units that are essentially the same design. I have also owned 8 or 10 of the probes that stick into the meat. The thermometers are great when they work. They are so good that, even knowing the design flaw, I keep buying them and replacement probes.
The receivers and transmitters all work well and seem to have an expected long lifetime. The probe is the Achilles heel in every make and model of wireless thermometer. Within the metal, flexible shielded cable that runs from the probe to the transmitter are small wires. Small weak wires. Small fragile wires. Small worthless wires due to their failure rate.
If the user closes the lid of the BBQ or smoker on the metal shielded cable between the probe and the transmitter, the internal wires WILL fail. It may take 2 or 3 times, but they will fail. If the metal shielded cable is kinked or bent too sharply, the internal wires will fail.
A couple of years ago I was on the Webber customer service line (again) requesting a new probe because the wires failed. I asked the customer service representative if she owned one of these wireless systems and, to my surprise, she said "Are you kidding? I would NEVER own one of these". I asked her why and she said "I have a full time job, 7 days a week taking calls just like this one people complaining 8 hours a day, 7 days a week because the probe failed".
Now, if I were her boss, I would have fired her on the spot. From a consumer's point of view I found this conversation somewhat alarming.
This summer I will probably buy another and attempt to keep the smoker's lid from crushing the tiny worthless wires but eventually I will fail and so will the probe.
In short, this is a great product with a major and easily correctable design flaw. Be prepared that the wires within the shielded cable can and will fail.

Came right away! Works great. It even warned me when a roast caught fire on the grill. (made a different tone and I went to check) It also gives about a 5 degree warning before the target temp. is reached. The speaking voice is pleasant and loud enought to heard well. Has a belt clip to wear the reciever on your person. I've used it indoors and out, without fail.Highly recomended!! Thinking of buy'n a second one for the vacation home.

Secura Digital Halogen Infrared Turbo Convection Countertop Oven, Deluxe Package w/Extender Ring;To
I was looking for a convection oven for quite a while, and did a deep research. I owned a Nuwave Oven for 1 year, got rid of it because I didn't like the plastic dome, it turned yellow and with a lot of scratches. It was impossible to see how food cooked in the oven after a few months. And then I got a Flavorwave Oven for a little bit longer, everybody loved it. My daughter took it when she came for dinner last Christmas : ( which she is still in use : ) But I really like this type of oven, and came across Secura oven the other day. It has all the features Flavorwave has and a very good review. Now I think I made a good choice, this oven performs even better than my old ones. It's more convenient to use with the hinged arm oven top, and the cord is detachable, my old Nuwave and Flavorwave oven don't have a detachable cord, so when you lift the oven's head, you need to hold and drag the cord with you. This looks like a minor improvement on Secura oven makes our life much easier.
Well the cooking result is also amazing. Cook for the same amount of time, same temp setting as my nuwave and flavorwave oven. In my opinion, the flavorwave oven and the Secura Oven are pretty the same result, quicker and juicier and you feel more favor and natural. But with the similar price, I got an extender ring, and 2 standard racks with my Secura Oven. Nuwave and flavorwave, they don't offer the extender ring for free, (extender ring's value is about $30). I used the extender ring to cook the whole chicken several times, it's very useful, a must have accessory.
This is my first product review on Amazon, and I looked all the reviews here before I bought this oven, and I think sharing some good experience is very good thing to do. I hope more and more people know this good product, and use it. We really eat healthier with it, every time I saw so much oil drip off during the cooking, I always say, "WOW I'm so lucky to have this oven, I really ate much less fat and oil very meal!
Both Secura and Flavorwave oven use Halogen heating, Nuwave uses metal heating tube. Halogen lamp definitely helps you see clearly how food cooked inside the oven. But if you do not care about this, all three ovens give you pretty good results.
Both Secura and Flavorwave oven use glass bowl, Nuwave uses plastic cover. All of them works pretty well and dish washer safe. My first Nuwave plastic cover has a lot of scratches but still very sturdy. All of them are very easy to clean, and both Secura and Flavorwave have build-in self-cleaning cycle.
Nuwave and Flavorwave ovens have a lid holder which is designed to put the oven top on after cooking. BUT, the problem is I keep forgetting to attach the lid holder to the oven, so many times I ended up looking around to find a place to hold the oven lid. :(((( You do not have to worry about this with Secura oven hinged arm oven top.
Nuwave's accessory parts feel like not as solid as Flavorwave and Secura oven. The wires and metal plate feel like a little bit thinner, but the oven head is solid enough. The Nuwave oven is only about half the weight. So if you are weak or handicapped and want to carry the oven with you on the go, Nuwave oven is easier to move around. We are a household of 3 and owned the NuWave previously. Many have left good reviews of this machine already, so I will focus how it the two machines compare.
After 9 months, our Nuwave see-thru plastic shell cracked. Even before the cracking, it became opaque like an worn plastic car headlight. The white plastic base was already yellowing as well. The Nuwave was still functional, but it was too big and got uglier by the day. The heating unit on top was very sturdy and of a resistor design similiar to most conventional electric stovetops it probably wouldn't break for a decade.
On the other hand, the Secura Digital (SD) has a glass body shell which I greatly prefer. I don't think it is tempered, which means one shouldn't put it in cold water while hot or it may crack. Otherwise, it's a much cleaner and better design. The heating unit is halogen, like the 500w utilitarian work lights around. Halogen lights seem prone to breaking, but our oven is still is in one piece after 3 months of extensive use. Should the heating lamp break, it can be replaced for $35 and seems like a simple procedure to replace. It's rated for 2000 or 3000 hours, I believe, and the filament seems thicker (and hopefully sturdier) than said worklights.
The Nuwave has 4 big pieces to clean. The clear plastic shell covered in splatter, the gray metal drip pan, the white base (which always has meat juices in it after use, for some reason), and the metal rack. All these pieces are large, they will hog all the room of the bottom rack of a dishwasher.
The SD has 2 medium-large pieces to clean the bottom glass shell and the metal rack. The glass shell can fit in the bottom of a dishwasher with much room to spare for dishes, and the metal rack can fit in the middle rack of a dishwasher. The glass cleans easily and still sparkles like new. There is a 3rd piece, the glass on top, but a quick sponging suffices as it hardly gets dirty enough to warrant disassembling it (if even possible).
In operation, the Nuwave cooks okay at the medium-high to low temperature ranges. It seals the air in and keeps things moist. It has a bigger body and probably can cook bigger things. I have not tried a goose with it, although I believe it might fit in this one, defitely not in the SD. If you wanted to turn meat over or add things, you have to take the heating unit off and clear plastic shell off (the top) and have a large, free space beside the machine for the top.
The SD also seals air in and cooks excellently. It gets hot faster, and has a high to low temperature range. The halogen can get really hot and give Chicken a nice crisper skin than the Nuwave. In the normal configuration, it can cook a large chicken. With the extender ring, we have successfully cooked a duck, which has an elongated body in comparison and needed to be slanted. A goose, otoh, is too big and I had to opt for the normal oven. This higher-end model has a swing arm connected to the top. It's very convenient to just flip it and meddle with the food quickly.
The display on both (digital versions) are okay and easy to use, although I think the temperature and airflow guage text are too small on the SD digital for older eyes. Eventually you'll learn the position of the LED lights to not need the guidance of the text, but it should still be bigger. The cooking time on both are easy to read and adjust. On the SD, you can adjust airflow from Hi-Med-Low which is a feature not available on the Nuwave IIRC.
A complaint I have on both machines is that the chrome on the metal racks have given way to copper underneath. They were very thinly plated, perhaps flash plated. They should have been better quality.
I knocked a star off the SD for the display and metal rack plating issues, but otherwise love it. It's superior to the NuWave as the daily appliance, it takes up significantly less space but it doesn't feel like I'm need to cook smaller portions. It's aesthically more pleasing, plus easier to clean. I'm glad I went with the digital version for the more precise control and swing arm. The extender ring is useful too. Another nice touch of the SD is that it can be truly turned off without be unplugged. It has an old fashioned power switch on the side, and not merely a "soft" off that sets the machine dozing at a few watts an hour. More and more devices are missing that these days and playing energy vampire while not in use and it does add to the electric bill with an entire household of gadgets behaving this way. Just thought I would mention that.
Bigger households may want to explore a bigger machine but I can't see why it couldn't service 4-6. It also toasts bigger bread pieces nicely in minutes:) One thing to be aware of with any machines of this nature is that it cannot cook pizza well pizza needs to be heat from the bottom, otherwise the cheese is burnt and tomato sauce is boiling, and the crust can still be frozen. A conventional oven is better for that.
To sum up:
Space Winner Secura. Less countertop footprint while having just a wee less cooking space.
Heating Element Longevity Nuwave. Uses a resistive heating coil like many stovetops do. Secura is a halogen bulb, notorious for burning out. On the plus, the bulb gets hotter and can crisp chicken skin and fries at the high heat setting.
Clean up Secura. Made of glass, easier cleanup. Less parts. Sized to fit in dishwasher. Many Nuwave parts won't fit. Buttons on secura covered by plastic sheet, so there are no spaces for gunk to accumulate.
Body Secura. Made of glass. Nuwave plastic fades and becomes opaque like a cheap car headlight within a year of use.
EDIT: October 2012
We finally had to replace the bulb as it burnt out. We used the machine a fair amount, cooked a lot of chickens, but I would say we used it 500 hours and not the 2000-3000 hours bulb life the company claims. I found a new bulb through ebay, same manufacturer, for $25. Unfortunately, what I thought would be a 15 minute affair, turned into a 3 hour one. Without instructions, my son had to grapple how to disassemble the machine to replace the bulb. It's not a simple plug & play affair, unfortunately. You have to remove the 3 cover screws and take the cover off. After that, it becomes less straightforward as there are over a dozen screws, as well as the fan. The answer is to remove the 4 deeply inset screws (that are in the circular enclosures) and to keep turning until they come out. I'm sure next time it will take only a half hour. Some of the internal pieces like screws looked sufficiently rusted that I suppose we can replace the bulbs 2 or 3 times max before it becomes a good idea to replace the machine with a new one.I have been thrilled with the results using this device.
*The taste of meats and fish are superior. The oven cooks by infrared heat and convection. Convention means that air is circulated around the food, which seals in the juices. Meats & fish are very moist and tender inside--better than I have been able to produce by other methods of home cooking.
*I like the design because the top flips up and will stay in that position. Competing products that I have tried require one to lift the hot cover up and over the food, and put it...somewhere. The top is a little wobbly when in the up position, but it's still the best design I have seen.
*I like the glass bowl design...I can put it in the dishwasher should I need to (though it does take up a lot of space).
Tips:
*I like to line the bottom with aluminum foil to minimize cleanup.
*The oven comes with racks, but I wanted extras. On Amazon, I got some small roasting racks..I couldn't find round ones, but found some 6x9 rectangular ones. For small meals, like 2 chicken breasts, I put the rack over an aluminum pie tin(usually lined with foil so I can reuse it), and then put the chicken breasts on top so air can circulate well around them. If you want to get them higher up in the oven put the bottom rack below the pie tin. Smaller racks = less to wash.
*When cooking potatoes (40-45 min) and sweet potatoes (25-35 min), I usually flip them over half way through cooking. Browning is more even.
*Do not expect instantaneous cooking...as a conservative estimate, I would say that cooking times are from 60 to 75% of other methods.
*Fats & oils from the food tend to discolor the protective grill on the heating element. When the recipe book recommends that a food be cooked on the high rack, I position it a little lower, more in the center of the oven. I do that by putting one of my extra roasting racks on the bottom, then a pie or cake tin (foil lined, open side up), and then the "lower" rack. Food cooks the same and there's less splatter on the grill. I guess you have figured out that I REALLY hate cleaning!
Note:
The glass bowl weighs 7 pounds. It is not for the frail elderly. The 798DH is one amazing little product. I've loved it the entire time I've owned mine, which was about 8 months. I bought the product in late December of 09 and Yesterday 8/7/10 the bulb burned out and there is no way to replace the heating element. Your only option is to purchase a new one and I can't see spending $150+ on a new one that may or may not last over 6 months to a year. Luckily I paid $100 for mine as it was on sale at the time of purchase. It's just very unfortunate the bulbs can't be replaced because this is a fantastic unit otherwise.
The best thing about this unit was that it did NOT smoke... I can't tell you how important a feature this is for any turbo oven. I live in an apartment with no outside fan for the stove and got so sick of the house fogging and smoking up. This unit solved that problem. The unit cooked everything wonderfully except for maybe really odd things like large canned biscuits, although it cooks the smaller ones just fine.
The sad thing is I'll probably be forced to purchase a cheaper oven without the hinged design, due not for the unreliability of the unit but, the lack of replacement parts.
I'll probably go with a Natural Solutions Turbo Oven for a few reasons.
#1. You can buy replacement parts
#2. They offer 3 different cooking elements that are all interchangeable.
#3. 2 of the cooking elements do not use infrared so they are much less likely to burn out.
#4. Cost is under $100 for a new unit and less than $75 for a replacement cooking element.
Comment about my #4?
Yes, you can probably purchase a new oven like a Deni for less than $75, but the Deni's and Sunpentown ovens make it too hard to find replacement parts and I don't actually trust some of the reviews especially since the Sunpentown reviews look to be fake. It could very well be that the Natural Solution oven is exactly the same as the Sunpentown ovens, but I'd much rather order from a place I can actually get support from.I bought one of these about a year ago and it performed exactly as I expected.
I especially enjoyed broiling steaks in it as the heating element got good and hot and did the job in a very short time. The outsides were evenly and lightly charred and the interiors juicy and tender.
Then I switched it on yesterday and the heating element died on me. No problem, I thought. I'll just remove the element, a halogen lamp, and replace it. Not so. The lamp is hard wired and not practically replaceable.
A serious design flaw in my opinion. What were the folks at Secura thinking? That customers will simply shrug their shoulders and buy a new one? I don't think so. At least not me.
Go back to the drawing board, Secura. Make the lamp replaceable. When you do I'll think about getting another one.
