George Foreman GRP4EWS Platinum Evolve Grill with 2 Grill Plates and 2 Waffle Plates

George Foreman GRP4EWS Platinum Evolve Grill with 2 Grill Plates and 2 Waffle PlatesI had it easy this Christmas. There would be no repeat of the "Margarita Machine Incident" from 2008. I had very clear instructions from my wife that she wanted a new Foreman Grill, and _only_ a new Foreman Grill. All that was left for me to do was pick the version.

I can't give a side by side comparison with other Foreman grills, other than to our earlier one, but I can go over what I think are some nifty features on this model:

1) A big surface area means Really Big Waffles. Having a waffle maker that puts out two large waffles is great for those times when two hungry kids think the next one off the grill should be theirs.

2) A sort of double-hinge at the back. I'm not sure the technical name, but it allows the back of the grill to adjust as well. This reduces the annoying "steak wedge effect" from the old grill, where the one bigger cut of meat would reduce the contact with the grill for the other cuts. It makes for more even grilling.

3) The jury is still out on the timer. Although it is a nice option, we have yet to use it. ***UPDATE*** The timer and accompanying booklet are handy. Last night we grilled fajitas, and we used the cooking time for skirt steak based on thickness of meat and desired doneness, then adjusted to a somewhat thicker chicken breast. Both turned out quite well. The suggested cooking times cover several meats and cuts, and using the booklet plus the timer reduced the number of times we needed to check on the meat.

4) Small footprint. There are no handles or other protuberances, meaning that you get a good sized grill surface without taking up much cabinet space.

5) Finally, the big one: removable plates. This removes the biggest complaint with earlier grills, clean-up. Taking away the inconvenient and messy cleaning of the whole grill required by older models makes us much more likely to use this.

Overall, we are very pleased.

5 stars

The last George Foreman was the best I ever owned but this one is better except it needs to be larger... especially for the price! I paid $50 for the last one. This one cost more than double that amount and listed for $179. The advantage to this grill is that it has exact temperature control and a timer, however the accompanying cook book does not have complete instructions for which temperature to use for what. What is there is very hard to find. There should be an alphabetical index by type of food. I am sure a lot of George Foreman users are novice cooks such as myself. George should make it easier, not harder to use.

We read all the reviews and finally decided to go with this grill. This was supposed to be an upgrade and replacement for my older Foreman Grill and waffle maker. We are very pleased with our decision. The cooking surface is bigger than our old grill. We can cook 4 chicken breasts or burgers at the same time. Having the ease of removing the plates to clean is a great feature. I hated cleaning my old Foreman grill. I ultimately decided on this grill because of the timer and temp feature. I'm happy with my decision as they both work very well.

This Grill makes some of the best waffles I've ever had and it is easy to use. I use 1/2 cup of batter in each side. Be careful on using the recommended time and temp that the book states. We have found that we like our waffles cooked on a lower temp for a few minutes less. The first waffles we made were a bit crunchy. I usually just clean my plates in the sink and I've have yet to have anything stick to them. The nonstick surface works very well and having the option of being dishwasher safe is a bonus. Another upgrade on this grill is the tilt feature. I really like having the option to tilt the grill or cook flat.

There are only Two cons to this grill that I have found. The first downfall is the cord is really, really short. It might be a foot and a half long two feet at best. I'm lost on why they would make an appliance with a cord this short. We have a plug under our counter top that we use. The grill has to sit on the edge of the counter to reach the plug and it barely reaches. The second con is that the plates are a bit thinner and lighter than I expected. Its not a big deal but don't order this with the thought that your getting Dutch oven thickness. The plates also don't lineup exact. You can move the grill back and forth a little with lid closed. Not a big deal unless your halfway through cooking a waffle and bump it.

All and all I am very happy with my decision to purchase this grill. I would recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade their grill. I am happy with my purchase decision and have since bought all the extra plates to use it more. Hope this review helps everyone doing there research.

I like the grill. It does great reheating cold pizza, frozen fish cakes, and making grilled sandwiches (leaving a nice toasty crust). I tried making waffles but I forgot to put vegetable oil on the grills first so I'll have to retry. I'll have to do a further review later on when I've cooked more foods. The grill only stands as shown and isn't made to store sideways so if you have storage space to fit it then no problem.

When you do a preheat cycle at the beginning, a 5 minute timer starts and beeps 4 times when the timer finishes. The removable plates makes washing easy and dishwasher safe. The power button doesn't shut off the grill; after the time beeps, it goes into a continued heat mode. You have to pull the plug to completely shut it off. The electrical cord is a miserly foot and a half long and the plastic tongs melt when moving food around. Target is having a 1/2 off sale in the stores at the moment so you might want to check there first.

Pros: Easy to use, easy to clean (huge improvement over older models), and makes good waffles. Plus it has a timer and variable temperatures. The user manual is helpful b/c it gives advice on timing and temperatures for cooking various things. Plus it cooks things relatively quickly.

NOTE: For making good waffles, it's better not to fill it all the way. Just put slightly more than 1/2 a cup of batter on each side and settle for smaller, circle-shaped waffles. If you fill it all the way, your waffles won't cook as well, b/c they'll be well done in the center and less done around the sides.

Cons: Takes up a lot of room to store the grill and the plates. Does not fit on my counter. Plus, there's not as much cooking surface as you'd think probably enough for 4 small burgers or 3 normal-sized burgers.

Over all: I'm glad I have this item and will use it relatively frequently for a long time. I would highly recommend it for someone who is new to cooking, or for someone who does not have an outdoor grill, or for someone who likes being able to cook things quickly/in a hurry.
