Emile Henry 12 by 10-Inch Grilling/Baking Stone, Noir

Emile Henry 12 by 10-Inch Grilling/Baking Stone, NoirWe have used this Emile Henry baking stone twice, we bought this specifically for a gas oven. We purchased it at the end of July. The first time we used it, all was well and it worked perfectly and we were very happy with it, believing we had finally found a workable solution to our uneven heating issues. At this point I would have rated it as 5 stars as it was the perfect size, with a design we enjoyed.

HOWEVER, this weekend we used it for the second time, and things did not work out so great. We used it in the exact same method as we used it the first time, and we heard a noise coming from the oven, similar to when you add an empty pan to a hot oven and it buckles, excepting much louder. When we opened the oven to check, our thermometer was lying in the bottom of the oven, so we assumed this had fallen off the rack for some reason. However, when I went to remove the baking stone, we discovered that it had snapped in half this was the noise we heard. Of course, we are now outside the easy "returnable" period for Amazon and will need to call them to find out what to do.

The description of this product says it is designed to be used directly on a gas, charcoal barbeque or oven and can safely reach temperatures up to 500c/932f. The oven was set at 350f and the stone was placed into the oven before switching it on. It was not used on "direct heat", so I would not have expected this to happen. The question is, was there just a flaw in this specific baking stone, or is this something we can expect to occur with every Emile Henry baking stone? I would love to give another a try, but not if I have to keep sending it back!

UPDATE: We contacted Emile Henry, and after being required to send e-mails detailing exactly how the item was used, as well as photos of the item, a new Baking Stone was shipped to us. Unfortunately, the item was not packaged very well. It could be the box was dropped or bumped, I am unsure, however, the corner of the baking stone was damaged and chipped. I contacted Emile Henry immediately to let them know...to date, I have received no response from them. I doubt I will be able to use the stone in its current state as it is compromised. I have decided not to purchase Emile Henry again, I am not convinced their products are as good as they advertise, so will be seeking an alternative. Both broken stones will end up in the trash and we will chalk the experience off to education one of avoiding ALL Emile Henry products in the future.

Love it for baking bread, pizza, and even salmon! The clean up is simple. I highly recommend this as a multi purpose kitchen tool. A must have!!
